Can anyone recommend a good cheap insurance company for an 18 year old male?

At the moment its costing me 1,800.00 for 3rd party fire and theft for a flipping Fiesta that cost 500 quid!

However, making myself female its 1,200 quid  discrimination

    Any useful help much appreciated.

Cude - Can't you buy an annual rail card for that amount. Then just hire a car for away match days ( insurance included). Why have a car? one of the most expensive items a young person could own.

Thing is as second driver you don't build up your no claims.

I'm a lazy canut mate as you know, therefore I can drive to the station, also helpful when seeing mates at places, and a fair few places near me aren't easy to get to via bus. Also rail prices will only go up :(

Cheers mate, will have a read through it now.

I was with Elephant.co.uk until it came round to renewal time when i switched to tesco. On a brand new Fiesta, 3 weeks after writing off another car i paid £600 for fully comp, would have been 19 at the time.

Elephant seemed pretty cheap, but i think thats just because i used my uni address in devon, which makes a difference somehow, because although there aren't as many chavs to break into your car and other cars to smash into, there are many many country lanes which do nothing else but encourage reckless driving. Just out of interest i got a quote from elephant using my Aylesbury address (many chavs, many cars) and the price went up to well over a grand so they might not be too cheap for you.

I use that website all the time, (www.moneysavingexpert.com), and I'm always reading how much young drivers save in that particular section I linked to. Every hour you spend going through all the stuff there will save you hundreds.

I love this site. Especially their campaign to get Carol Vorderman off the telly. Loads of useful tips, not least the one about getting back bank charges (am waiting to see what happens with mine).

There's a "doctor" down The Tudor Arms that'll do the op for £500 and a packet of scampi fries apparently. That'll save you a ton.

CHRISS. check out quinn direct, trust me they are cheapest. i got quoted 1g for a 1.2 sxi corsa, and thats on my own policy. Dont go on your parents. Companies say yessss your parents no claims are protected but actually thats only for 1 claim. so if u claim and second time, they loose all their no claims, so get your own policy. i was quoted 1,000 from quinn direct, it then shopt up to 3-4grand+ with the likes of tescos and the AA. So try quinn direct mate.3rd party fire and theft and tell us what you gett:)

Try adding one of your parents (the one with the best record) onto your policy as a named driver. Some companies will quote less for you in this situation. Other tricks include limiting the mileage you agree to drive in a year and also remember to keep getting quotes every day. Prices really do fluctuate significantly from week to week.

The Pay-As-You-Drive thing was just being launched as I got my first car, though in the end I went with Direct Line for £1,300. You have to be 110% sure you're not going to drive after 11pm ever or they will screw you over on PAYD. Something like £1 a mile puts you up there with a taxi fare! Remember that it has an atomic clock measurement so no 'but my car clock said 22:58' bullcrap is going to ride with them.

What was the target price you had in mind?

Got quoted 3k something on them mate :(

UEA, I'm hoping for 1.5k or less really mate. Got 1.6k at the moment, but really looking for cheaper than that, but I suppose my targets to low.

Seriously, how do some of you afford those horrific prices? I'm shocked at how much the "yout" are paying these days :dismay: My first car cost £800 in 1982/3 and the insurance was never anywhere near the cost of the car, not even half if my brain isn't playing tricks.

One good thing about getting older is the insurance prices

Those are incredible prices. We do it 'named driver' and I'm sure it's about £400. I wouldn't worry about building up a no claims bonus until you've had a couple of years driving experience.

I swear the next person I meet who works even close to insurance is going to be hard not to hit him. Think I messed up the cheapest quote I had by giving some incorrect details. Everyone else is about £2,500.00 - £3,000.00

Got this Morethan drive one which is over 1000 quid but has limited times you can use the car, which to me is no good as each time you use it out of the times you have to pay 25 quid or some ridiculous amount.

I would love to know why someone hasn't just set up a specialised young drivers insurer, which properly looks after young people. For example, say you will give them £1000.00 Insurance fee (which is far cheaper than anyone else) however they must pay 1000-2000 excess. That way the young drivers get on the insurance market to get no claims, but you should hopefully not have to pay out too much as the driver would have to pay the first 1000-2000 quid should they have an accident. Makes much more sense to me. I swear there is a niche in the insurance market somewhere here.

On these quotes? Or in general me myself?

I'd pay anything up to my cars value happily, so 250-500.

Insurance is all about risk. Young drivers are a significantly disproportionate risk. I can't see why anyone would want to start up a company just for them.
