is signing for Oldham http://www.oldhamathletic.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsUpdate/0,,10337~1030711,00.html
W4nker, he killed two people by drink driving and then ran from the accident he is the lowest of the low, scum. Personally i think he should of been shot. Any team even thinking of taking him on should hang their heads in shame.
Absolute disgrace, shame on Oldham. I very much doubt he will actually make it back into professional football, I am sure there will be a few Oldham players, let alone fans who will give him a tasty reception come first day back training. I hope someone goes over the top on training on him and breaks his legs, there is repenting for your sins but this bloke actaullly killed two people.
For controversy's sake: Is there no such thing as doing your time and your debt being served to society anymore? If he goes around not giving a **** about what happened and showing no sorrow privately then fair enough but I've seen no evidence anywhere of that. He killed two people, he ran away, he was a tw*t and deserved everything he got. But should that stop him earning a wage again?
I know everyone deserves a second chance etc but that is shocking news, in fact it is a disgrace imo, the reason being as a footballer you are a role model to youngsters of the team you play for. What type of role-model is Hughes? Think he was banned from the prison team after a fight during a match as well.
i think you are correct UEA, i think the animosity is caused through the light sentence and then the small % of what he will actually serve, after all he killed 2, was under the influence and did a bunk.
3 years for murdering 2 people and that is justice........i think not. He made the decision to get behind the wheel of a car p1ssed before he had his first drink by driving to the pub. He then drank himself stupid (ok he didn't need drink to make him stupid) and drove. He kill two innocent people one of which died a year later from the internal injuries he caused. The man is SCUM and a murderer and 3 years is a very un-funny joke. As for Oldham are they doing this for publicity? The old any publicity is good publicity. Sorry but if i played for Oldham I'd be looking for another club to go to because i couldn't work along side scum like him. I hope all football fans around the country give him so much stick he f*cks off never to be seen again.
He has cost two lives yet serves something like 3/4 years in prison, something is wrong there. I actually think whatever he earns should go in compensation to the families he destroyed (Didn't OJ Simpson have something like this ruled against him after the cival case in America? UEA I am sure will know!) He no longer deserves to earn a wage in my opinion. I would have rather my hard earned taxes were spent on keeping him inside for life.
Your problems seem to be with the sentence, which is the fault of the system. Lee Hughes' was given the standard for that offence. The punishment doesn't fit the crime because the law is so antiquated but that is not Lee Hughes' fault. He's out, he's free and should be able to do what he wants. I still think the guy is a tw*t of the highest calibre for what he did but he can't take it back so should not be punished further. I don't know about OJ matimbers, it's a bit before my time. Death is cheap in this country from a civil law perspective so he wouldn't have to pay too much comparatively. He's also hardly likely to be on a pretty penny at Oldham. Probably a pay-as-you-play deal.
He was a prize tw*t when he was at the baggies even before he became a killer, i didn't actually think he could progress to be even more of a tw*t but he managed it.
thats if you take the view that prison begins and ends the debt. one could argue that prison is merely a social construct in which offenders rehabilitate, while the debt to society (to be collected in any way the members of that society see fit) continues for as long as any person wishes it to. there are proably other arguments along those lines too
At the end of the day I genuienly believe that everyone deserves a second chance and the law of the land is there for that reason, you do your stint then get on with it! Of course, if it was my family or friends he'd killed it would be a different story, but such is human nature!
I hope everyone on these forums remembers this thread if they are ever tempted to drive after a couple of drinks, coz the only difference between Lee Hughes and anyone else is a bit of luck. So next time you mate brags about being able to drive home after 3 pints coz it doesn't affect him, nick his keys, you might save someone elses life.
I don't approve but I am not going to lose any sleep over it. I can't really do anything about the situation apart from get in a tizzy and I am certainly not going to do that!.
It was an accident, im sure he didnt get in his car with any intention of hurting anybody. Iknow many a person who has been done for drink drive, it happens.
I think you're right there watford_away. An idiot he might be many times over for choosing to drive when sozzled but he never set out to kill anyone I'm sure. He's killed someone and served the time the law set for him. He's also banned from driving for a decade I seem to remember. He deserves a second chance. A murderer sets out to kill. He didn't.
neither do the operators of antiquated train firms yet most people (rightly (i owuld say in my opinion, but theyre capitalist big cats. if you don't feel that way then you just aint proper)) feel if their negligence leads to death then they should be treated as murderers
The law disagrees. 'People' (whoever that group is made up of) are emotional, inconsistent, reactionary, believe in double standards and have a strange sense of justice. I do think the law should be updated - and there are plans for this - to make the sentence for drink driving leading to death longer. He killed someone and didn't set out to do that so it's not rocket science to guess he's gutted by that fact. Doesn't make what he did anything like right but in my opinion it does mean that he should be given a second chance.
all i really have to go on here is a very limited unerstanding of social anthropology and political science, but i'm probably never ever going to be able to use those skills in an intelectual debate again, so this seems as good a place as any to use them. unfortunately i have play a pro evo tournament so consider this a warning uea. soon a whole load of mostly unreadable rambles are coming your way! on the one side, law and rules on the other abstract notions of societies rights over the individual
Yep. In the eyes of the law death by dangerous driving is not the same thing as being a murderer, which some people here are accusing him of being. I agree that he should have spent longer inside though, at least up until the full time of his sentence. I would be pleased if someone gave him a career-ending injury though. To be honest, I'm surprised that he even has the guts, or should that be nerve, to resume such a public profession.
I also hope people remember this but they should not believe that luck has anything to do with it. If you are driving, don't drink. If you are drinking, don't drive. It's that simple.
the law in this country is a joke some people are locked up for alot long for a crime that is no where near as bad. Dangerous driving causing death should be the same as murder. A car is a weapon. No football club should sign a player that should be behind bars for many more years.
Let's get this into perspective: Marlon was caught driving a stolen car - he didn't steal it and he showed remorse. Moses - can't comment, but e was a **** whatever the circumstances. Hughes went out and got drunk knowing that he was going to drive home. He drove recklessly enough to kill one person and put another in a wheelchair for life knowing that he was drunk - Hughes was driving at speed on the wrong side of the road. He drove off knowing that he had, at the very least caused serious injury. He didn't give himself up even after a cooling off period - he turned himself in after 36 hours - he lied to the police by attempting to report his car stolen during this time. Is that enough yet? OK, let's continue... He pleaded not guilty despite being bang to rights. He carried on playing for WBA showing absolutely no remorse. Could any decent person do this? I don't think so. He was actually prosecuted for Dangerous Driving. Follow that up with the fact that he was on suicide watch for a while in prison. Why? Remorse? No, because his wife had cheated on him and he wasn't allowed in the prison football team. The guy couldn't give a f**k about the family of those he killed. Crucifixion is too good for him.
