Funnily enough, Mrs Browns Boys has an IMDB rating of 7.1, which doesn’t completely support my point above, but the devil is in the detail. If you sort the ratings by geography, in the UK we’ve rated it 6.2 and in the US they’ve rated it 8.6  So it’s the yanks dragging it’s rating up, and for those in the UK who have bothered to review it there is a big disparity between viewing figures and reviews.

So you're now saying "artistically better". Not sure what that means but you could certainly say that Bowie's music is for example more complex than Black Lace. You could say the music is tougher to play. If you wanted to define that as making it "better" then in your eyes I can see why you would say "Bowie is better". However surely the real test of whether one piece of music is better than another is whether it's more enjoyable to listen to than another. Plenty would prefer Black Lace and so would say it was "better".
In the same way, you can assess the quality of the dialogue, characterisation etc between Friends and MBB but isn't the better comedy simply the one you find the funniest, which will vary person to person ? Or would you say that everyone should find Friends funnier and therefore better ?

No it's not. That's the test of whether you prefer it. Preference is not the same thing as worth/value.

I enjoy Wham! more than Bowie, but the latter is a superior artist.

I'm always stuck for what films to watch, but this is as good a guide as any, obviously taking into account the wrong headed opinions of certain posters, so ignoring their choices, there are some enticing films here I've not yet seen, alongside a great many of my personal favourites.

Just thinking aloud of some that need to be on there that haven't been mentioned.

I think the main issue with a critics view is that film is viewed and reviewed based on it being art, which of course it is, but for the average Joe on the street it’s entertainment and that’s what matters.

Well, yes but you could say that about all sorts of human endeavours, including sport. It might be more entertaining to watch Rochdale than Man City but that doesn't make them 'better'.

It depends how you define "superior" and how you define "worth/value".
You define the criteria on which you are going to measure each and then you can say superior in your eyes. However others, the Black Lace fans amongst us, may not agree your criteria :) !!
Who is better, George Benson, C0ldplay, Adam Ant, or Kings of Leon ? If you can say with some authority that Bowie is "better than" Wham, then can surely say with the same certainty using your same criteria, the order in which those 4 rank, in a way that all others on here and indeed fans of those acts couldn't disagree ? If you concluded George Benson was best, do you think fans of KOL would agree that whilst they prefer KOL, George Benson was clearly the better act/artist ? You're trying to apply an objective assessment to something that is subjective.

But it's not completely subjective, that's my whole point. What would be the point of galleries collecting particular works of art, or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducting artists, or even the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature, if it was all subjective? There are criteria on which you can assess worth and value beyond mere preference or popularity. Originality is an obvious one, influence/impact another (both good reasons to distinguish Bowie from Black Lace).

As I have said, it is difficult to tell what is the best of something simply because when you reach a certain level of skill then there is little to choose between artists. But it doesn't follow from that that everyhing is merely subjective. Nor does it mean that people are somehow 'wrong' if they prefer the 'inferior' artist (I think we agree on that point).

Perhaps our disagreement is over use of the word 'better'. If so, I accept that that word is probably too blunt to capture the distinction between preference/enjoyment and worth/value. But I do think there is a distinction.

Anyway, we're clearly not going to agree more broadly on this so we should probably stop clogging up the thread.

I have to agree with TUT here in that music is about opinion and there are no wrong answers with what is good and what is not so good .
Which is better Mozart , The marriage of Figaro, or Never mind the boll**ks ?
Personally I dont have a favourite song but I have songs that I equally love and none are any better than the other .

Yes, agreed. I think you can assess against various criteria, originality, complexity etc but that doesn't make one piece of music "better" than another in anyone's mind other than yours, unless everyone appraises music in the same way and broadly agrees with your own marks against those same criteria. Anyway, I agree with @Keighley that we have done this to death !

As I say, I think the problem probably lies with the word 'better' which covers a very wide range of meanings. And that comparing across different genres is almost impossible. But you can assess both Mozart and the Pistols against certain criteria which would render them of more worth than (say) VIc Reeves doing his pub singer impression, entertaining though that is.

Bowie for me counts for so much more than any other music. My first single, album and concert was all from this guy. My first love in any type of music and still is really with Depeche mode a close second. Certain songs, albums take me back to good times as a child and even my sons lullaby before bed was Starman. He would sit playing with his cars singing and humming to it and Space Oddity. Special moments for me that has even bought a smile to my face now.

A complex song with many hidden meanings, including a radical solution for the Palestine/Israel impass and a snide attack on the shortcomings and moral decay brought about by capitalism. Do you not see that ?

Rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day, cracking film.

Was researching it afterwards and found the ‘plot hole’ argument to be rather convincing. In case you dont know about it, it’s the idea that Indiana Jones is highly irrelevant to the plot of the film, as the Nazis would have found the Ark (even after digging in the wrong place to start with), opened it and all died, with or without Indy. The Big Bang Theory did a whole episode on it
