As we appear to be trying to get a work permit for this guy we can only assume that we are intending to bring him in to the 1st team set up and probably give him game time too.

I thought maybe it was like buying a development plot of land, securing planning permission and then flipping it for a quick profit? Asprilla to another English club before the end of January?

Sadly you are probably correct. £15m profit without seeing him if all goes well.

Pretty sure they're both from Latin America, so they both speak Latin.

When I visited the Welsh speaking areas of Patagonia one of the locals told me that their Welsh language teacher, paid for by the British Council, was away. His name was Hamish McDonald. True story.

Ryan @ Wobby saying he was in attendance of Envigado’s first game of the season yesterday and there’s a real chance he could stay there on loan.

Personally think that would be incredibly dumb as it’s not going to get him any more points towards a work permit and it’s not going to push him at a level above what he’s used to. Lose-lose.

  11. Burnsy

    Or…

He can stay where he is and keep impressing for another 6 months in an environment where he’s obviously comfortable - so much so that he’s broken into the international side not long after turning 18. If he continues to get into the National side, a work permit isn’t a problem?

Not sure that can be described as a move with no upside. He’s only young and could be overwhelmed being parachuted into Italy or an English relegation battle in our coldest months. I don’t think 6 more months in Colombia will really hold him back.

  12. simpleMASH

And if his temperament isn’t right to handle a move to Europe now, then 6 more months at home won’t help that either.

If it was deemed that he’s best served staying in Colombia he should at least go to a club in that cup competition that earns him the extra WP points. But I think he’d benefit from playing at a higher level or doing what Joao Pedro did and having some time to get used to his new surroundings here before being relied on as a regular.

It will likely get him more work permit points, he only played 42% of available minutes last season which gets him 1 point, you'd imagine now he's broken through that he'd be a more integral part of their team, playing more mins and thus getting more points (up to 6 points for 90-100% of mins). We could also still manage to get him a work permit now - which will last for the duration of his contract with us and then loan him back to Envigado which won't have an impact on next season with us.

He's only been called up to the national team for these two meaningless friendlies, and that's perhaps just to do the player a favor in enabling him to secure a work permit.

After these, Colombia's next four games are World Cup qualifiers, which I highly doubt he'll feature in.

It probably wouldn't impact his work permit though as it's already 7 points for 1-9% of international fixtures in the last year.

Still, I'd bring him over asap. He seems at a similar stage in his development to JP when he signed, and it's taken a while for JP to adapt to English football, so the sooner the better with this chap as well really.

The state of the pitches, quality of matches and standard of facilities where he currently is will be pretty crap. Even if he doesn't really feature in games yet it'd prepare him more for next season being here imo.

Maybe you’ve just worded this in a way that it reads incorrectly - but the next 2 games are WCQ and he’s already in the squad.

Doesn't mean he'll get on the pitch though.

It is a good sign as to his potential, but it could just be some kind of work experience thing, similar to when Sven took Walcott to that tournament but never played him.

He looked very Foden esq. Always available and wanting the ball, doesn't mind having a pop from distance too. Encouraging signs from such a young man.

By the same kind of token, it doesn’t mean he won’t either.

I’m not saying he won’t be of use to us now, or that it would not be beneficial for him to come over and try and settle. I’m just making the argument against the original statement that there’s no upside to keeping him where he is.

It’s ok, we’ll get a few mil in compo in a few years time. The world will cheer as PSG get a transfer ban (under appeal). If you aim for the king, you’d best not miss.

I can totally understand keeping him at Envigado if we are confident he can get a work permit in the summer at the end of it.

Envigado punch well above their weight in terms of producing players - they clearly know what they are doing in terms of player development. Him moving to a different club where he has to change scenery for 6 months and where he is not guaranteed to start just because they are in the Libertadores doesn't necessarily

I really like the look of him, but as with JP, he is hardly going to come in this January and be an instant saviour.

We're loaning him to PSG to get him used to European football before bringing him over. It was PSG or Doncaster Rovers and he chose PSG.

Apparently he can drive an HGV and people with such skills are in far greater demand that lads who can merely kick a ball.

The nearest he’ll get to the Vic is stopping off for a Ginsters at Watford Gap.

Hopefully the club have learnt from the Peñeranda, Success, Dahlberg, Wilmot and Quina fiascos and will take care of this one. In the cases of Richarlison and JP I wonder how much of their development was down to the club and how much is their own desire, lifestyle and ambition. Another area of the club where the fake PR, in this case about developing exciting young players, doesnt tally with the reality. It's another area of the club that needs a severe and intelligent audit and an effective new strategy.

Richarlison seemed to be the only one who came here ready to be an automatic first team pick, and JP, while he didn't play very much at all initially did have some strokes of fortune in that a) lockdown enabled him to bulk up and get physically ready for England, and b) we got relegated which gave him an opportunity to play and do well last year whereas he probably wouldn't have done so if we'd stayed up

It's rather moot without a permit. My understanding is that he's there because not only will he get some minutes, he'll be eligible for meaningful international matches, which is what he needs for a permit.
