Thought I'd start off a would you rather thread based on a thought going through my head on the 5 hour car and horrendously tedious rail replacement bus (each way) to the game yesterday. So can be any would you rathers. I don't really star threads and this one may die on its harris. So to start off - would you rather: 1. Permanent member of the premier league, no relegation. But you would never finish higher than 17th and you'd only ever win a maximum of 8 games a season (could be the odd big a scalp). You'd still get absolutely spanked 5 or 6 nil by the top 5 regularly. But you got to mix it with the big boys for eternity. 2. Permanent member of the championship for eternity, no promotion. You'd always finish in the top 6 and you'd win at least 24 games a season. You never get to mix it with the big boys aside from the cups but you get to enjoy winning on a regular basis. No major financial improvement to being in either.
Neither. You’ve basically described American major league/minor league sport but without the (relative) equalising factor of the draft and farm systems. What would be the point of being perpetually stuck in the same situation with no prospect of a winning season in the PL or a losing one in the Championship?
If our income is the same I'll take the championship ta Less pompous and arrogant fans, a more raw match day experience, good chance of getting tickets to any game, and no ridiculously unbalanced regular shafting from the likes of Abu Dhabi FC
Initially I'd say the championship, however it would get frustrating very quickly. The joy of football is the unpredictability and the hope - if our league position was predictable and consistent like that then I'd probably lose interest and give up on football, to be honest. Without the chance of promotion, or winning things is it even sport?
Agreed. Anything that means I can enjoy my sandwiches and my day out will make it better. If we can keep the noise down, that would also be appreciated. I need to listen to the commentary on my handheld radio please.
Not really playing the game the original post poses but a cup competition for just the Football League would be brilliant. Would be a genuine chance of silverware for most of the teams in the Championship and a fair chance that some of the League 1/League 2 teams could go on a run deep into the latter stages. Would be highly competitive and almost impossible to call the winner each season. A proper cup competition, in fact.
Nice idea. Personally, I would say Championship. I hate what the PL has/is going to become. A bunch of massive clubs stuffed of plastic fans' who are bankrolled by Oil Merchants or some other practice, having their roots ripped out and turning them into a money making scheme. I would love for Watford to be a main stay PL club, but I would only appreciate it, if we went about it the right way, starting from the top and getting rid of all the dead weeds. But, yes in reality Championship football seems more old-skool.
I'd add the longer we have been in the PL the more Arsenal like our fanbase has become I can see a lot of benefits to at least 5 years in the Champ, most of them will have f****** off back to the Emirates by then
Assuming that the custard is somehow enriched with vitamins to stave off scurvy etc? Either way I’d take losing a thumb. Grandad cut his thumb off on a table saw and it didn’t seem to bother him much.
Do you really believe that people who disagree with you on a forum will go and support Arsenal. You really have posted some nonsense the last few days.
Derailing the thread a bit ideally I’d try and solve the problem with both leagues. Cut the PL to 18 teams and the championship to either 18 as well or 20. Take the money saved from cutting the two spots, scrap parachute payments and then take that money as well and distribute it down into the championship and beyond so that 1st place gets something like £60m, make 20th in the PL worth something like £80m. Then introduce a strict salary cap based on only TV income and match day revenue so that clubs like City and Newcastle can’t cheat the system and make up sponsorship deals. That way you’d have a higher quality more attractive Championship, the premier league would be more competitive, but getting relegated wouldn’t be the end of the world.
