Understandable that Hughes thought he wouldn't get a game ahead of Louza. Toilet player.

After watching us today I’m happy to make a u-turn on my opinion on Hughes. After losing Doucoure and Capoue my opinion has always been the answer was neither Hughes/Chalobah or Kucka/Tufan, it was that something better than all of them was needed.

Watching us aimlessly pass it around at the back then run out of ideas before hoofing it upfield, it’s clear we’re missing essentially an entire midfield, a midfield that can take the ball from the defenders and do something with it.

Hughes would definitely be a help in that regard.

In fairness to Lowerrous Hughes wasn't getting games as McCarthur ( Mr IBB'S favourite) was their best player ( his words) and his injury gave Hughes time.
He wasn't impressive yesterday from what I saw but all of this is irrelevant isn't it?
The player/agent were intent on leaving for whatever reasons so that's the end of it.

The guy was subbed off yesterday for some bloke called Jairo Riedewald, yet he's the answer to our midfield issues. Lol.

Hughes has looked sharper and fitter in a Palace shirt in his first few starts for them than I think I've ever seen him for us, with little of his typical move of taking a tumble on his 2nd touch because he lacked the pace to evade anyone with the ball.

Maybe the long layoff or Palace's superior coaching and facilities have done him good and he'll remain sharper, but it's still far from out of the question that he'll revert back to his typical more lethargic self as he plays more again, and teams figure out that it's not very difficult to block the passing lanes into him as he can be quite static.

And he is a typical footballer - will have one or two good games then a bad one.

Only the very best perform well on a consistent basis and even that isn't every game.

How could he have been persuaded?

  25. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

He wanted assurances over the clubs direction.
He wanted a leadership role within the squad.
    He was dubious about Xisco.
He didn’t want to sign for 5yrs.

These are all things we could have done something about so I don’t agree that ‘very little’ could be done. Although I do understand ‘sacking Xisco’ isn’t viable at the whim of a player - even if it is something we should have done.l looking at the wider picture.

    A leadership role at 26?

Should anyone be certain which direction any club can go in tbh - it's hard to make promises that come true for a club like us.

Fair point about the long term contract but I presume that is because he felt if we went down he'd want to move on.

    I see.
α) A reasonable request and one I have asked at my present club.

β) This strikes me as a little flimsy, Hancock's " do we get a badge for doing this?" Lead by example and not title or role. This is so prevalent in modern sport, especially elite sport and education. Everything has to be an ' Academy' or suchlike.

γ) As were we all and a strange change by Gino not to remove him in May. One can only assume CR wasn't available then.

    δ) Understandable.

    Thanks for the detail.

I know I am not having it that the rat hadn't already spoken to Palace and knew exactly what he was doing the whole time. I don't think he was signing an extension regardless of length of contract or leadership role it was a financial decision and he already knew what he could get elsewhere.

I seem to recall we offered him a really low release clause, something like £4m rings a bell, so the length of contract shouldn’t really have been an issue for him.

The whole Munoz thing is fair enough, but that makes it a should’ve rather than a could’ve. You can’t sack a manager just to keep a player happy, but we all know he should’ve been removed for different reasons anyway.

Walking to the ground yesterday one of the chaps told a tale of Tom Carroll.
He was offered a contract at QPR for half the money he'd been on when he joined on a free.
    He declined, thinking they'd negotiate.
QPR removed the contract and said " that's it,it was take it or leave it".
He's at Ipswich now and not playing.
    Tricky business these negotiations.
