Hello, looking for a bit of advice. Need to buy a new washing machine.
Are there any brands people would recommend or that are best avoided.
Also any advice on companies that deliver/install that are either good or awful

    Cheers folks

Most brands nowadays seem to be crap and made to fail after a few years (same thing with ovens, etc.).

We've had the best luck with ruggedized heavy-duty laundromat style coin-operated machines (with the coinslot removed) - those things are tanks. Not sure if you can get those easily in Blighty or not, though.

We tend to go for Bosch applicances and pay the extra for a 5 year extended warranty (but something you can get one thrown in at places like AO). You'll pay a bit more overall but I think it's worth it.

I agree with UEA, but wanted to suggest once you have the answer you change the thread to Cthulhu’s recommendations thread or similar where folk can ask for or offer all sorts of consumer advice to beat the cost of living crisis.

I would agree about Bosch but it does depend where a particular appliance is manufactured. The models made in Germany are always excellent but they do outsource some manufacturing to companies in China and they can be of less high quality imho.

Our hoover washer dryer is decent. Trips out the safety switch occasionally and disables the heating elements. Friendly local tradesman told us to take the top off (2 screws) and press a button. Hoover cover it on warranty but charge you the 85 quid call out fee.

They did mine and left a pipe unconnected. Ordered a washing machine, got a free swimming pool the next morning.

Bosch are not the manufacturer they were 10 years ago.
    Hotpoint is junk.

White goods are disposable now unless you spend silly money on Meile or the like.

Get something cheap and simple and recycle it when it fails. Not green but it's the way it is unfortunately.

Very happy with my Beko fridge freezer and washing machine. Both purchased in lockdown from AO. Install the app and you get a discount. Also wait as there's often discount codes.

Top tip. Don't pay for installation or at least check it first. My washing machine came off it's adjustable feet on first spin as they'd extended them too far. Luckilly no damage done. Also collection of your old stuff can be arranged a week or so later than delivery of new for no extra cost. Useful for transferring frozen food across.

With the closure of the John Lewis in the Harlequin, a shop provided to them at zero rent so I understand, I'm boycotting them.

Pretty much what @hornmeister - there's the very high-end stuff and everything else. Mid- and bargain-ranges are either re-badged or re-cased versions of a few basic models (or they use the same components. Extended warranties (except on the very high-end stuff) are a complete waste of time.

Each to their own but depends entirely on the extended warranty I'd say. Some sort of monthly payment scam from Currys or Argos that keeps you on the hook forever should be avoided like the plague, likewise any manufacturer's extended warranty that costs a disportionate amount of the original cost of the appliance. But to me, 10-15% on top of the purchase price to extend the warranty directly with a reputable manufacturer for another 3 years (so 5 in total) is a fair trade off.

We bought a Bosch last year from John Lewis, had it installed by them and everything is perfectly fine. Clearly experiences vary.

A washing machine engineer on a call out (a ******* long string of small beads was in one of the kids' pockets and became wrapped around the inside of the drum) told me that anything over 4 years from a machine is a bonus (don't forget all of those warranties has a "beyond economic repair" clause and my time at "Tempo" where the onus was to sell not products but extended warranties on the products still resonates) but you should religiously use anti-scale tablets/liquids with every wash and clean/descale your dishwasher/washing machine according to the cleaning products' instructions.

Don't know where you're based but I always use Euronics in Rickmansworth/Mill End. Prices are great, service is excellent and the stuff they deliver always seems to do exactly what we need for as long as we need it.
Also another vote for hornmeister's post, it's easy with white goods now, buy cheap and replace when needed. Don't prioritise brand, prioritise fetaures you need in that appliance only.

Not getting at you at all, because you're absolutely right, but this is a sad state of affairs for many reasons.

That's my take too; either buy a heavy duty commercial appliance, or get the cheapest one you can that meets your needs and assume you'll be replacing it in 3-5 years. Overengineering is a thing of the past, and consumer stuff just seems to be engineered to fail after a few years nowadays.

While I didn't provide details, I didn't form my opinion off a single datapoint or purely personal experience. There are numerous sites that catalogue this info, and it's something every repairman I've spoken to for years now has confirmed in kind.

There are always outliers, but the overall trend is clear.

Well, personally I would always prefer to trust the evidence of my own experience rather than secondhand information. However, I don't have cause to disagree with your last sentence: I suspect that what you say is probably true but I was simply pointing out that one can't wholly generalise about these matters.

Incidentally our fridge has been working perfectly for more than 20 years now.

Not sure what your Budget is but as it is something you will prob use at least every other day will try and stretch the budget it as much as you can, I have put in Several LGs and they seem solid machines and all the clients seem happy with them, I think they are doing 5 Year Guarantees offer now, would not touch Beko or Indesit if budget allows, also go on Ebay and AO.Com sometimes have their new machines with 20% of the price on their Website same machine, they usually do this at the end of the month. Never had to deal with LG customers services, Samsung were very good, Beko non existent

I have a Beko fridge freezer, I got it in 2016 and it's still going strong, the only issue is that a couple of the freezer drawers have cracks in them on the side from overuse. I also have a Beko washing machine, it is about 7 years old and going strong, the only issue is that some of the enamel paint has peeled of at the bottom on the front so it looks a bit unsightly. I have never had to deal with customer services.

My previous fridge/freezer was a Hotpoint and didn't last 3 years, I can't remember what brand the previous washing machine was, but that lasted quite a while too.

My mate had Beko stuff at his holiday flat in Turkey. Got an absolute hammering with the rentals but was flawless. That's why I went for them. Nothing to do with the WFC connection.

My last Fridge freezer was a hotpoint. Lasted 4 years. Before that Bosch stuff lasted a long time but by all accounts and forum reviews in recent years they're built to a price now.

I think the Beko stuff is cheap but only in the areas where it's doesn't really matter. The actual workings appear to be solid

We have a Miele washing machine and tumble drier. Yes, it’s expensive relative to some brands but I’ve never had an issue with either of them (both are over 8 years old). I think some of the cheaper brands are a false economy.
