What Is 'political'?

This is a genuine question to the mods and the wider membership. I've been a mod on another WFC forum before so I know it can be a thankless task, but what actually makes a thread or post 'political'?

In view of the politics section being closed, two threads being recently locked in this section because they've become political and another thread perhaps going that way, as well as members being threatened with temporary or even permanent bans, I would welcome clarification on what is deemed 'political'.

It could be argued that any issue is 'political'; environment, race, gender, covid, food prices, media, gardening, etc. Are we talking 'political' with a small p, or party politics? If the latter, what crosses the line between acceptable and unacceptable? Or is it when political discussion or argument turns into personal insult, in which case it's not politics that's the problem?

My opinion, fwiw, is that it's probably better to have a politics section on this board so those who wish to participate or read, have their own corner - and others can totally ignore it if they're not into it. Surely better that than politics 'sneaking' into other parts of the forum? But I'm open to being convinced otherwise!

The moment that both zztop and Moose have posted to a thread, it's political. Start a thread on cheese, zztop may say he prefers stilton and moose likes Wensleydale and then the fireworks begin.

The moment it gets personal then it's political, that's the cast iron 100% measure.

That's not how posts start though. It would start I prefer stilton, but no doubt the usual suspects who prefer Wenslydale will be along to disagree, they really are a disgrace.

The notorious thread on girls school gender politics (for heavens sake) kicked off with

"The woke brigade really are getting their knickers in a twist. Cue the usual few on here who will suggest this is quite sensible and "progressive".

A number of people mildly in agreement with the sentiment of the thread had no problem with this obvious call for a fight only to later pull the pin on it it’s been ruined! Like the intentions were good in the first place.

I don't get this, Lots of personal stuff is thrown around in the football threads - posters frequently have a go at each other. Are you saying that is political?

I had Stilton on a burger last night. Maybe a little overpowering but still delightful.

The intention of the thread on the Girls School was to discuss a controversial political/social subject as I feel that the messages our school children are getting are important, whilst recognising there are alternative views. so I don't see anything wrong in bringing forward at the outset what I think the alternative opinions may be - it saves time. There was no calling out anybody, no criticisms and no personal insults from me. but, if some people do recognise their own views in what I say, then so what? They can either join in the discussions on the subject, or they can ignore the thread if they don't think it is worth discussing, or they can get personal as a way to deflect the thread away from the subject (effectively trying to close of the discussion down) - and that is how the thread usually gets screwed up.

I’ll reply to you once only.

I made lots of calm and rational points early on in the thread. You ignored them all.

You never wanted a debate, clearly just wanted to sound off against the ‘woke’ but you enthusiastically took on a row later in the thread.

Not really one for buying a burger when we go out to eat but on this occasion had to be done. I even used a knife and fork not because I'm a flash **** I just have a tendency to end up with it mostly down my shirt.

It’s not the politics that is an issue but the divisiveness that goes with it. I post in the politics section because it is all self contained in there, and all us d**ks can be be d**ks, without taking the d**kishness out into the wild. That is why I have not been interested in politicising, or to become involved in politicising the wider forum. As far as I am concerned, politics has no place on a football forum, but if they want a politics thread that keeps it separated, then tally ho!

Someone summed it up a few weeks back in the deja vu thread, regarding my political posting, when they said my (Hooter’s) job is done. I agree.

It seems highly likely that the arguments have all been won when people complain and get posts deleted (they got my posts on CRT deleted, predominantly because I posted videos of Parliament describing CRT as racist, when they had previously defended it) and subsequently the whole thread because their entire narrative had been taking a kicking from reality, IMHO. The upshot of the complaints appeared to be that a poster, or a number of posters, were complaining because something they said made them appear to have racist leanings, and it was better that the entire thread be removed than that be allowed to happen, despite the fact that a major part of their schtick has been to accuse anyone who doesn’t agree with them of being far right racists.

Subsequent posts elsewhere make it clear that they want their own unpleasant accusations and personal attacks protected, but when people say similar things about them, they want them removed.

I am not being political here, I am describing what was going on.

I won’t go on about it here. If anyone wants to reply to me, you can use DMs. Otherwise, feel free to leave your impersonal comments…

I think there is something in moving to a cheese-based politics debate. Covers all bases. Arch-Remainer @Ghost of Barry Endean could be Caved Aged Gruyere. @Keighley a sensible, but not OTT Mature Cheddar. @Lloyd something jolly like a Monterey Jack.

There’s more than a touch of Lymeswold about a few others.

This is a football and general banter forum, why bring it here? You really do fall for what they want us to talk about dont you, the usual divide and conquer stuff the masses fall for. Who really cares what a bunch of school kids want to call themselves anyway?
