Wasn't that the summer of 1987 when GT left and B*****t took over. Watford eventually beating the Chinese National Side to win the Wall of China Cup in front of an absolutely mahussive crowd. We toured Jamaica earlier in the 80s too.
We played a team called April 25th on 27th May!! Bizarre. Also I’m sure we played New Zealand around this time and won 1-0.
Yes the summer GT left as Richard Hill was in the squad so could only have been that summer. Marc Falco listed so must have been just before he left.
Luton Outlaws have moved on from the game really quickly. Shame the software they use hasn't! Crikey it's older than Kalu.
With a diet of Monster energy drinks, Alabama Fried Chicken and heroin, I’m surprised that the good people of Luton don’t get poorly tum tums more often.
There were two tours to China – one in 1983 and the second in 1987 just after GT had left and Bassett had been appointed. Bassett didn't go because he already had a holiday booked, so physio Billy Hails took charge. The first tour was part of a UK trade charm offensive, and I think that might have been partly the reason for the second trip too. West Brom had been on a tour to China in 1978 and these tours were a small part of the soft power plays as China was slowly opening up to the world. There was a trip to Jamaica just before that first tour to China in 1983. Watford played Team America and drew 1-1. From memory, the trip was organised between Colonel Ken Barnes, John's Dad, and Bertie Mee, who knew each other well from a tour Arsenal had made to Jamaica back in the 70s. The really extraordinary trip was to Trinidad in March 1987. The team flew out the morning after beating Arsenal at Highbury in the FA Cup, played Sao Paulo of Brazil, lost 5-6 on penalties, flew back and then beat Arsenal again at Vicarage Road on the Saturday.
April 25th are one of the biggest teams in DPR Korea and affiliated to the army. Their home ground is in Pyongyang. According to Wikipedia one of their current players, Sim Hyon-jin, used to play for Hearts in Scotland. I find this hard to believe.
I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate our neighbours for having their first shot on target at the Vic in 16 years, well done lads!
Emily Atack, Stacey Dooley, Nick Owen, Alistair Cook, Miranda Hart, Monty Panesar, Cerys Mattews, your boys took a hell of a beating Sunday.
“They played with no skill or discipline, made major errors leading to goals, hoofed the ball aimlessly, then showed no resilience or pride in the shirt or in themselves when the going got tough. This could have been written about us, after the Millwall game. I just hope our team now realise that they have set the bar for the amount of effort the fans want to see every match.
Also Colin Murray, ostensibly a Liverpool fan, but has been heard speaking very fondly of L*ton Town in dispatches ......
That is what Bilic was angry about in his presser after the game. Great that we won in such a dominating way, but why haven’t they played like that in previous games. There are no excuses to not turn up like that every game.
That was the occasion when their player John Trewick, given the opportunity to visit the Great Wall of China, made the memorable comment: “When you’ve seen one wall, you’ve seen them all.” It was allegedly a joke but, since he was a footballer, I’m not so sure.
apologies if this has already been posted but enjoyed watching this dare anybody not to think how Hodgson would have reacted. I’m liking our manager…hope he stays around
Cerys Matthews? She was born in Cardiff and is as Welsh as anyone I can think of… Alastair Cook was born in Gloucester and plays for Essex… Surely neither support the scum?
I'm afraid it's true in Cerys Matthews' case. She explains why in this thread – other half's a lifelong fan. https://twitter.com/cerysmatthews/status/1352583071271440385?s=20&t=1JZ0Zqh64NXc3PLLolfFgg
Hard to believe. I blame alien abduction for such an anomaly. This could be a case for Mulder and Scully
Excellent article here from Andrew French, with reaction from the 1997 team to Sunday's result: https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/23078559.class-97-discuss-another-watford-4-luton-0/
Shame there wasn't more of Jones. I did like his realisation after the 2nd that there was no way back
Snigger. The gift that keeps on giving. He's now complaining about the complainers. I thought it was time to move on. Evidently not. https://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/...g-his-team-lambasted-for-watford-loss-3898601
