On fairness he did push it out wide and not in to the centre of the goal, sadly for him Pedro was lurking in that area

Especially when whipped in with pace and swerve making it indefensible.

35 winger puts one low pace cross into the right area and it comes off and people are acting like it's amazing.

These people would have burned Nigel Callaghan as a warlock

Precisely that, I never made out it was the best cross ever seen in football. My point is that the cross was delivered between the defence and the keeper, it's a defender's nightmare. The fact that the keeper made an error of judgement is neither here nor there. What I argued about is Nath's flippant comment that the cross was a poor one, it wasn't poor, and if Pedro wasn't where he was at that moment it still wouldn't have made it a poor cross.

Looking at it from another point Davis could have been a step or two further forward meaning it was possibly for him, yet Kalu had managed to get to the far side of the 6 yard line in time.

Nerves. As a brass player myself I can tell the difference - and I also know how stressful it is playing unaccompanied in front of a huge audience.

Way into the 1970s at Arsenal there was a tenor soloist singing operatic arias with the Metropolitan Police Band at half-time. I really felt for him when I went to matches there, as his audience wasn't exactly supportive, not being great fans of either the Met or or operatic arias. At least Remembrance Day buglers have the crowd behind them.

You realise that sometmes you don't want the ball to land "right on the head or foot of a teammate", sometimes you want it in front of the player so he can run onto it ?
When he crossed the ball most of his teammates were marked, and near the edge of the box, so not much point in trying to hit their head or foot when he crossed.

    Er, no.

Money still went out of the club on Success. Fee and wages. Hardly any appearances or end product.

Sarr didn't have a negative impact.

Poor recruitment and under investment in defence over five years is not about that one signing.

We wasted far more money on other players with no return on investment. Sarr has given regular appearances, goals and assists. Put the blame elsewhere where it belongs.

Genuine question here, put your thoughts about Sarr to one side for a moment and forget about the actual player.

If after our highest PL finish and a cup final we gave our manager a fresh four year deal, but then decided to use our entire transfer budget on a player he didn’t want and that didn’t fit his system, would you consider that to be a good or bad buy?

  11. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

Of course, they're ace too, but it wasn't in front of anyone to run onto either. There was no one where it landed. And there's no way you're going to convince me Sarr deliberately went for a relatively slow, whipped, bouncing option like some sort of trick shot to reach Kalu or even anticipated the keeper making a mess of it.

And I'd say your second point backs up a view it was a hit and hope job rather than some supremely measured piece of skill.

Either way, a goal's a goal, but I reckon that cross goes in 100 times and we score in low single figures, that's how great it wasn't.

I don’t think anyone has said it was a “supremely measured piece of skill”. Just a decent cross into a dangerous area between keeper and forwards/markers. The most disappointing thing from our point of view is that no one made the effort to get to it more centrally before it reaches the keeper. Davis had clearly run out of juice and was just lumbering goalwards. “Oh what a ball” as the commentator says as it’s pinged in.

Think this sums it up nicely. If anything the reason the keeper may have been a bit slow to come out was he was expecting a player to be attacking the near post. Doesn’t really excuse him as Davis was clearly not going to get there but the cross is a great one to attack. We just need to be sure our attackers are in a position to do that.
Most crosses should be put into a position to attack rather than straight onto someone’s head/foot. If anything the cross of this nature should be into an area a yard or two ahead of where the attacking player is.

Are we sure it was a player he didn't want?

It wasn't our entire budget either if I'm being picky.

My point was that the Sarr purchase was not the problem.

Our wider transfer strategy over five years was the problem.

Not to mention our habit of changing managers and the player culture that enabled.

not sure we are going to agree here. Do I think he was overpriced, yes. Do I think we’ve seen good value for that money, no. Do I like him as a player, not particularly

but his stats show that he contributed more goals and one of the most assists out of all the squad in that 20/21 championship promotion season. He’s up there again this season. Add to that I have no trust in our recruitment policy that his transfer money would have been spent any wiser

so overpriced, yes. Worst value signing in the history of the club, no not in my view compared to contributions of Success, Gray, Ellington, half of Viallis signings etc

Your point only makes any sense if we bought him as an established PL club who’d just finished 11th and reached a cup final, and our aim was to get relegated the next season so he could help us get promoted again.

Not a good signing based on transfer fee and playing style at that time.

But a decent player the rest of this league would want in their sides and a nice lad from what we see and hear who (although others disagree) seems to care and want to do well for the club.

Frustrating at times but the club has to take its share of the blame for his development.

Ultimately I’m not as keen as others seem to be to see him move on. Trawl through this forum over the years and you’ll see the same desire to see the backs of players like Doucoure, Capoue, Pereyra, Deulofeu, Richarlison etc. Wouldn’t mind that group of players at the club again quite frankly.

Well it wasn't behind them so where was it? As somebody else mentioned maybe Davis should have been a yard or two further forward and Kalu would have got it had the keeper not palmed it away. For me it was put in a very good area making it difficult to defend and it certainly was not rubbish as mentioned by others.
Your second point is partly true as due to the fact everybody was marked, Sarr puts it in to an area where somebody hopefully should be making runs so there is an element of hope but there is also an element of skill. Is it Supreme? Probably not but it's a very decent delivery that has ended in a goal
Lastly, most crosses are put in to an area for people to run on to as it makes it difficult to defend and also makes it easier to get pace on the header or shot. A poor cross would be straight to a player as getting pace on the ball is then more difficult. There is a reason people talk about attacking a cross. Sarr's delivery allowed players to attack the ball, the keeper realised that and had to come when he didn't want to (Kenneth Williams photo please) but as it was curling away all he could do was palm it away rather than collect it
It's not world class or anything but it's a very good ball in to a dangerous area which leads to a goal. As a matter of interest what do you feel Sarr should have done?
Sorry, one more thing (insert Colombo photo please) you mention that if the cross goes in 100 times we score in low single figures. Stats say for every 100 crosses there are 1.6 goals so if we scored 2 or 3 goals from those kind of crosses it would better that the stats say

The key thing is Sarr's cross was going to land right on the foot of Kalu at the back post for a tap-in, had the goalkeeper not intervened and diverted it to JP instead.

No one is actually saying that it's "amazing" though are they?! They're just pointing out it's not crap as per Nath's comment.

He's also our leading as sister this season, so it's not just "one" rare event.

It's going straight to Kalu for a tap-in if the keeper doesn't come out for it.

Yep, straight for Kalu if the keeper doesn't do his job at all and completely ignores the ball, dealing with it even more incompetently than he did!

    Good stuff.

You'd said previously that it was "a near post cross to no one", when it was a back post cross to Kalu.

Still, at least you seem to vaguely recognise you were wrong in your earlier comment, so well done for that.
