But what's driving this fear of underdoing it? I'm nearly 40 and all my life I've only ever known Remembrance weekend marked thoroughly and properly. I'm just back from church and it was rammed (there's usually about a fifth of that number there). If anything the more you do it outside of this weekend, the more you water it down. I'd say overdoing it risks losing its meaning. Especially with the people who instigated it now gone. Does festooning supermarket car park bollards with plastic poppies on 30 October or doing the full rigmarole at a football match on 2 November, just because it's that club's last fixture before this weekend, achieve anything really?
Nothing honours the brave and futile deaths of millions of young men in horrific wars, better than telling a child to 'shut up you ****.' The respect and dignity of that tribute brings a tear to the eye.
Enjoying the Remembrance Day debate , can see all sides of the argument . Can understand why some people have a problem with the connection between the armed forces and Britains dark colonial history but then would also counter the argument that many of those deaths were for democracy Europe wide and so the debt is owed by all not just British people . Can often be more constructive to find the positive in something rather than the negative and work with that .
Anyway back to the football …. some stats . We’ve scored 18 of our 23 goals in second halves this season . And obviously we’ve gained 19 of our 25 points at home . Which means we put in one good half every 2 games . Of our remaining 8 games for the first half of the season we have to play 5 of the bottom 7 including all 3 of the bottom 3 . A mid table Bristol at home and then an mis firing WBA. Away to Burnley being the hardest fixture .
I organised a cycle tour through Normandy and Northern France for Wounded Warriors, a Canadian veterans charity (much like our Help For Heroes). We concentrated, at their request, on 'Canadian' locations like Juno beach and Vimy Ridge, and Canadian military cemeteries across the region. I have also visited the Omaha beach cemetery a few times, and also on my travels, Turkish cemeteries in Alsace where Turks died fighting for the Germans in WW1. What struck me looking at all these young men cut down before they had had a chance to live, was that there is no distinction between nationalities and races in the tragedy and sacrifice, and that they had lost their lives because of the machinations of politicians and demagogery of ****s like Hitler and Mussolini, those that latter day ****s like Putin, Farage and Trump would happily emulate. This is is why the nativist ******** of our press and gullible fools like DP'sLS winds me up so much.
Full marks for your actions, but your equating Farage and Trump with Putin is crazy: Trump has already been in power for 4 years and is one of 3 presidents since ww2 to not start or continue major military action (Carter and Ford being the others - source Reuters). Farage has not as far as I know encouraged any wars and is not in power anyway. (He was widely and deliberately misquoted about Putin.) You are free to dislike them but lying or hallucinating about them does not help that cause. I also think it is sneaky to drop provocative political comments into a football forum.
Royal British Legion salaries 150k to 200k per year – number of employees 1 130k to 140k – 1 120k to 130k – 2 110k to 120k – 2 100k to 110k - 1 90k to 100k – 2 80k to 90k – 11 employees 70k to 80k – 11 employees 60k to 70k – 32 employees That's a lot of poppies. (Source: Charity Commission)
Yes, the Back and Tans were really horrible after WW1. But we shouldn't forget that a lot of Irish servicemen fought and died on our side during WW1. That said, I think Festy and others are entitled not to wear a poppy if it's contrary to their beliefs.
I’m still angry with the Romans for murdering my great great great etc grandfather in the religious genocide of the druids of Anglesey. And as for those bloody Normans who 900 years later murdered my great great great etc grandmother when they invaded .
My grandfather was a black and tan, my wife's grandfather was an Irish rebel . Different times I doubt Festy has the same back story
Very good point , which why I only donate to charity’s that have a low overheads to donation ratio . UNICEF is a good choice from my research .
I remember we didn't have a minutes silence before a game v Leicester few seasons back as it was 2 weeks before Remembrance day and think the club got a lot of complaints about it so guess that is why clubs always try to do it.
Freedom of speech and belief someone who (fairly) holds a belief you don’t like. Pathetic, let Festy do what he likes, he has valid reason, end of.
in defence if GOBE, they aren’t just randomly dropping in a political comment, it’s in response to the poster in question supporting Trump on the politics section, and telling everyone in there it’s none of their business discussing the US election, everyone should get on with it and not get their knickers in a knot. I’d imagine the irony of said poster proceeding to then get their knickers in a knot and tell people what to do over marking remembrance was way to delicious not to call out.
This is the most likeable squad since pre-covid times. The hard working nature is really refreshing after years watching tossers like Sarr & Davis barely breaking sweat. The ref was crap but games on TV always bring out the worst in refs. Pleased for Bayo - third top scorer in the league now is not something anyone would have predicted. He is undoubtedly our best option in that position right now. Chak was great fun to watch and looked dangerous, but again without impacting the goals or assists. The back three and Bachmann were solid. Ebosele is wasted on the left. He and Larouci are the best pairing for balance and impact but I get in the modern game players get upset about 3 games a week so it wasn't a surprise to see some rotation.
I don’t blame Chak too much for his relative lack of assists when the players on the end of his chances often blob the shot, only 2 players in the entire league have created more chances than him, although he could and perhaps should be more of a goal threat himself. His corners were much more threatening on Friday, the first one which almost went in might have seemed like a fluke but he tried it again so I think he meant to try to score from the corner
It's as much the fitness/conditioning and analysts who get upset these days I think, poring over data sets and metrics and noticing miniscule drop offs.
The Charity Commission doesn't list job titles, only the number of people with compensation within certain bands.
The players absolutely could play all 46 league games, but don’t expect them to be 100% for all of them, I think we saw at Swansea that even 2 games in quick succession isn’t the easiest
It is certainly frustrating. I agree with TC and the stats - we play better with Bayo in the team. But this team with a really sh1t hot centre forward could fly.
