Could be wrong but is that about 2 weeks earlier than normal? Always thought players are due back the first week in July.

If so that’s very telling towards Ismael wanting our players to get fit.

Tremendous. Look forward to us running out of gas in February/March time and plummeting down the table as the players moan about his intensive training.

    Only joking....

    He won't last until then!

Yes it’s already clear that come January, with our 3rd manager in the hot seat, we will be able to look back and blame our 15th place on the ludicrous Ismael close season.

Albeit the season started a bit earlier than usual because of the World Cup

I was already editing my post to say add that as you replied, but it seemed to only make a 1 week difference to our pre-season.

We still won't be having more weeks than usual of pre-season this time around @Markoa$

In 2021 it was a 28th June return for a PL season start of 14th August - so 6 weeks of pre-season training
In 2022 it was a 20th June return for a Champ season start of 30th July - so 5 weeks of pre-season training
This year it's a 19th June return for a Champ season start of 5th August - so 6 weeks of pre-season training

Do you genuinely believe he will get the type of player he wants?

Another point that was made was that his style of play is so unique that very few other managers would be able to work with his squad. If true, and we do sign VI's choices, it'll be another overhaul after he gets sacked.

Very difficult to spin this into a positive.

OK so after several months of loathing I'm starting to come out the other side with a little chink of hope....
On the grounds that: we really can't get much worse, VI will have a good pre-season with the players, he and Manga will bring in a few young grafters and move on some losers.
Then there's the fact that whilst we hated that "team" last season, I can't believe that all the main 15 regulars were completely rubbish. Something was very wrong and we lacked a spine but we surely don't need a dozen new players?
Pollock comes back a different player, Asprilia is doing well for his country's youngsters etc etc.
So I'm slightly hopeful but also dreading GPs next move as the season kicks off...

I don't think this is completely the case - our shortlist of managers were all of German heritage and in theory played an attacking, high press game, including Ismael. If/when he gets sacked there should be some similar possibilities if we wanted to continue with the same type of approach.

The issue with our squad as I see it is that we have recruited too many no. 10s from Portugal\South America who have been told not to worry about defensive stuff , just show for the ball .
Other posters may have a different opinion which is great

We could have done with more Pedro’s and Asprillas tbh .

They at least had some talent.

Maybe not exactly in those positions though I agree and not lightweight strikers who aren’t suited to the league.

Tend to agree. I'd much rather see us with a young keen bunch willing to work hard and learn, with some nice footy alo g the way, than what we witnessed last 2 years.
I noticed yest they put city's formation up as a 3241 and I'd like us to try that. 3 out and out CBs with 2 deep mids, and then 4 advanced midfielder/wingers. What could go wrong?

We don't have, and haven't had a potent striker for years now. Every game was played last season with a two we looked kind of like scoring. With Davis playing up top on his own, it was 'lump it up to the lump'. I do like that formation however and it is very attacking - but we just don't have the squad for it. Summer window will be vital for us this year, more so than others.

Welbeck had a few injuries that season and when he was fit a dwindling Troy was preferred to lead the line for some reason.

Ismael is a very disappointing appointment.
I give him 10 or 12 games, then he will be sacked.
His average tenure at a club is 7 months.
Vertical football tactics and a one trick pony.
Trying to find out if l can get odds on the number of games he will be our manager. No luck so far from the bookies.
Survival in the Championship would be a plus next season

Was at Cardiff last season (after being let go by Besiktas), and knows Chris Wilder well, I wouldn't have thought that mix would have given him a good impression of us, but hey ho!

Apparently they spoke after the Cardiff game too.

They expected us to score more at 1-0 - we probably got rather complacent.

That rather generous. If we start poorly, I think he will booted out end of August. Gino knows this season is going to be make or break for the club. Fail to go up this season and there will be zero extra income from the PL to help us next season. Rattling the tins for a quick whip around pre match to pay for the floodlights.

I agree. He'll only be around for a couple of months. News that Andy Whitehead might be coming as an assistant, is about as exciting as blowing my nose. Nothing last more than a few months at Watford, so as a fan, what's the point of investing any energy into it?
