The weird thing about the photo is that yes, he does look relatively slim, but he also looks oddly small in general, like he just hasn't been training at all, almost... Where's his chest gone?

Which is great news if you don't type "Troy Deeney never been fitter" into Google and see articles from the starts of the 2017, 2018, 2019 seasons, in all of which he's either claimed he's in the best shape of his life or has made massive changes to his training regime. I'd rather he just fronted up and said "look, I've been well below my standards for the last two to three seasons, but I've lost loads of weight now and I am determined to prove you all wrong".

Mate you scored 1 non penalty goal in 19 league appearances last season. 10 PL games with 0 goals is pretty much expected at this point.
Judging by some of the comments I have seen him make over the years, I would say there is a very strong possiblity he does... Also curiously, I would have thought if 'everybody' writes you off you would want to prove them wrong rather than not? If everybody says this as he says, then being determined to prove everybody wrong should be a massive driver to stick the two fingers up at everybody. Everybody.
What would be more refreshing would be “I know I’ve not played as well as I could have this last 3 to 4 years, so I’m determined to make up for that, for the fans, and have a great season”
Which is what the vast majority, if not all other players would do isn’t it? Say stuff like “I’ve not hit the levels I should’ve over the past few seasons” “I know I can do better than I have recently and I’m determined to prove it this season” “I’ve been working hard all pre season so I can get back the levels I know I’m capable of” Instead our Troy just blames everyone else, and lacks the self awareness to realise why the doubters exist in the first place.
I think it’s good to see that the club thankfully finally saw the light after his injury at Coventry last season, and in hindsight that was the moment he stopped getting picked on reputation alone, something many of us feared wasn’t the case until yesterday. Due to a combination of his contract and his legend status at the club, they’re managing him the right way in his final season, keeping him involved and not trying to shove him out of the door like Andre, but equally keeping him away from the main starting eleven as much as possible. Hopefully he himself accepts this and bows out gracefully.
In his match programme notes he said that he's least looking forward to sitting on the bench, but that he's going to have to if he's not deemed among the best forwards at the club, which seems to indicate some level of acceptance that he's not the main man anymore
