A host of the Premier League's big guns are keeping tabs on Watford hit-man Troy Deeney.

Sky Sports understands several Premier League sides are tracking Deeney as they look to bolster their attacking options before the close of the transfer window.

Deeney, who scored 20 goals last season, is regarded as one of the best strikers outside the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has picked up where he left off last season, scoring Watford's winner in their 1-0 victory over Birmingham on the opening weekend of the season.

Deeney's form over the last 12 months has seen him come to the attention of a number of top Premier League sides who are ready to make a move.

Watford boss Gianfranco Zola is a huge admirer of Deeney and has previously admitted the player could play in the Premier League.

Watford would be loath to lose their star striker, but they are aware they could face a fight to keep hold of him if any of his Premier League suitors come calling for him.

Personally can't see him moving this season. He clearly loves playing football for Watford and is settled.

I'm not sure how to take this. My heart says "nah, Deeney is here to stay" but my head is saying "Deeney is on fire, someone will come in for him soon"

Despite signing a new contract he could well leave but I think there would be a lot of reluctance to let him go and that'll bump the price up. Zola will not want him to go and will do everything he can to keep him. As for a replacement, it isn't just a case of taking a gamble by bringing in someone. You will need to be able to guarantee that the goals and build up will be replaced.

Can't see him going this season whilst he has a chance of getting a championship medal. If we don't go up I would expect him to go for the right price - £7-8m?

Pozzo model says sell when player reaches maximum value

If someone were to bid 7.5m - we won't see him for dust

In would come Ranegie and whilst that would hurt - you can't expect all of the inbound from the model if you are not prepared for the situation when someone goes - Udinese fans probably did not like it when Sanchez went - but that is the model

You're right. However, seeing as Deeney is currently, in my opinion, the most important player in the team, I think the Pozzos would only sell for a seriously ridiculous offer (£10m+).

Why sell now and risk losing out on £100m+ in Prem money for £7m now? Reject all offers, Troy leads us to promotion with another 20 goals and then we sell for £8m+.

Let's face it most the mainstream press still think we're still tinpot and are forced to sell as soon as any PL minnow come calling ... If it's not just the usual rubbish then let them fight over him but I can't see 6 or 7 million being enough.

There is the Pozzo model that suggests they sell their prize assets at a prime price but there is also the mentality that they will not hinder their team in the process of doing so.

They are aware of what Troy is capable of - IF he goes, it will not be easily. What they value Troy in the terms of money and to Watford Football Club will be 2 very different things.

There's also the homegrown matchday quota to consider.

Could we easily find an English striker as good as Deeney by the end of the transfer window? I think not.

Most of the teams that could be interested like West Ham and Norwich have brought strikers.

The Pozzos have their price but I am sure Zola will say he is the key forward player.

Also we'd need to ensure we keep enough British players in the squad...

And when they have an able replacement ready. We don't have one right now; having said that, if the Terrence Boyd rumours are true, there might be something in it. Boyd is more of a physical striker than a Fessi/Fabbrini type. Perhaps they've identified him as a Deeney replacement.

I don't see it happening. Why would we sell? Players like Hogg and Assombalonga... yes... they were not essential to the team, they were unlikely to feature much in the first team this season anyway (I suppose Hogg would have as sub and as cover).

Deeney is our star striker. He is the staple of our front line that will always be first on the team sheet.

  18. Guy

For all the stars at the club Deeney is our key player. He is the focus of the attack and scored over 20 goals. It was no coincidence that Watford's fortunes immediately picked up when he came back into the team.

Great for morale off the pitch and more importantly a home grown Brit.

Pozzo's not to be messed with, their treatment of Vydra has already shown this.

    Not going anywhere.

Promotion is worth far more to the Pozzo family than a short term transfer. Deeney is integral to this team. Zola will have stated this. Nani and Duxbury know this and even a 'ridiculous' offer is unlikely to tempt the organization when bigger riches are on offer from getting promoted.

I highly doubt that the higher uppers would allow the club to lose both key strikers that were key to the club's success last season. Acuna is still an unknown quantity and the other two strikers though they have potential are also untested at this level. Infact if we are there or thereabout's in January we could well see the Pozzo family sending us a New Year present in the form of another striker to bolster the side.

Depends on the amount and the alternatives .... If there's big money to be had then the scouts will be already working on a replacement for a similar amount or less.

    Maybe Deeney out Vydra In?

Whilst I can understand a bow wave of disagreements, if a silly offer came in, then I have no doubt he would be moved on.

Getting in a quality replacement that is proven at this level, has potential and can bully most defenders in this division will not be an easy task. Given the time frame and despite the Pozzo's scouting network. We could replace him in time (and we will probably have to at some point) but at this juncture in the season Zola has him as the spearhead and a key part of the plans for the season ahead. Losing him no matter what the transfer fee is would be very disruptive.

I'd say no, but mainly because we would need to replace Deeny with a Deeny type player, not because of my opinion on Matty's attitude. I loved Deeny against Granada, and I think that is something we really need. There's a strong argument to say he was our most valuable player last year, and I would say that he was certainly our most valuable forward, and had he played a whole season I think that would have been evident.

Whilst we're in the Championship I think we certainly need him. I think he could do a pretty good job in the prem too. Not irriplaceable, but without a decent clone ready in the wings I would personally be very loath to let him go.

Deeney is just as important off the pitch than he is on it, he really is the glue that keeps the squad together with his banter, videos, pictures he obviously is a very popular man. I can't see him being sold unless 10mill comes in for him or something silly like that.

  26. Udinese fans have been saying the same thing as many on this thread every year, and every year the club brings through excellent replacements. If the club chooses to sell Troy it's because they have better already in the pipeline, we just need to trust them!

Anyway I personally think its a load of rubbish and just media making up stories.

I agree £10m would do it. Fans need a sense of reality because the top leagues of Europe are littered with strikers far better than Troy that could be bought for that kind of money and that's if the Pozzo's don't have others tucked away in Spain and Italy... Yes it's late in the transfer window but that's why we can ask silly money, if we can improve our stock at the same time it is a must. Business is always business, don't forget it.

£4m bid from Palace apparently according to @soccer_sauce who has got a few things correct in the past. Won me a few bob by telling everyone who was gonna be the new Brighton boss at least two weeks before it was officially announced.

Off twitter ''There have been 2 bids by PL teams for Deeney in the region of £5m. Watford are not interested in selling and Troy is happy.

    #watfordfc''

  30. I'd be surprised if he's interested in Palace even if the club accept a low bid like that: 1) they're coming straight back down whilst we're going up, and 2) does he want to add a horrible trip across London to his commute from the midlands?

If the Pozzos were asking £15m for Vydra, Deeney must be worth at least half that. Vydra would not have scored as many goals without Deeney alongside him.

I wonder if Holloway is just on the wind up coming in for our and Udinese players? If he's serious it just underlines the think before you open your gob in public policy. A few bridges reduced to ashes me thinks.

I agree with what you are saying here, but I don't think they are simply going to sell for the sake of it, or purely based on money. A successful season in the Championship could double Deeny's asking price, and a half season in the prem could do even more than that.

Although Udinese have seen good players come and go, they also have their stalwarts, and the Pozzos surely know that there is value in loyalty where something is working. I am not saying at all that any player has no price, but there has got to be some value to the idea of stability even if it's only for a pivotal season that you have just prepared for.

Amazing to think how stable and sound a footing we're on at the moment and long may it continue.

Couple of years ago we'd be selling players like Deeney for a couple of million but here we are (we as in supporters) calmly scoffing at any bid below 10 million and also confident that, even if happened, ther would be quality replacements lined up.

    God bless the Pozzos.
