Stray thought I had while doing the shopping today:

Have we ever had a player score 20+ goals in three successive seasons?

Bournemouth have accepted a bid from Cardiff of just over 3 million for Grabban.

Grabban has had one season decent season in the championship. Prior to Bournemouth he wasn't that impressive at Rotherham.

Based on that 8 million has to be a minimum for Deeney...

Didn't he score something like 18 for Rotherham the season before moving to Bournemouth? Admittedly in League 2. (This may be wrong, pretty I read that somewhere though)

    Correct, 18 in 43 matches.

    Not a bad season then.

Deeney is worth more than double the 3 million Cardiff are paying for Grabban.

Shame though as I thought Grabban could have been one of the strikers we tried to get when/if we sell Deeney

Yeah! I rate Grabban, shame Cardiff has jumped in on us yet again

So close but yet so far.

I heard a fee was agreed and he was having a medical at London Colney when Cardiff contacted his agent.

Surprised they're selling Grabban, apparently they have a 25% sell on fee for Lallana so they'll be getting a big windfall from his move.

Bournemouth are 15 million in debt and are concerned about possible FFP sanctions so are in need of a cash injection along with the Lallana sell on fee. They do however have a wealthy Russian investor so their future is still pretty bright.

The fact that Cardiff got 63 million for finishing bottom of the premiership and buying Grabban could just be the start of their spending is slightly depressing.

    Poor journalism.

We didn't sign up Hoggy, Hall or Eustace last summer.

The sun say £4m offer by Everton. Maybe they only want half of him.

Great to know we won't get stiffed by other clubs and take the first offer that comes along any more.

If Watford lost Deeney they would be losing more than a player ...

Everton would be a dreadful move.

If he wants to go to the premier league then he wants to be looking at Villa/Burnley/Hull level.

  23. NortholtHorn

Would it? I'd say he'd be in with a shout of a starting place there, especially now Lukaku has gone back to Chelsea. Competing with Kone and Naismith. Think he'd slot in there well, £4m would be an insult though.

Everton wouldn't sign him to start games, hence 4 million. They'll definitely make another signing because they have European football to worry about as well. I imagine he'd be behind Naismith and another player, probably limited to bit-part appearances in the League Cup.

Everton will sign a first choice ST though, maybe Bony. In other news, Swansea have just had a £6.5m bid accepted for Castaignos, apparently they were interested in Troy and were willing to bid up to £8m, but that should put it off now.

Everton could be a fantastic move for Deeney. They don't have too many great striking options, none in the Deeney mould really now that Lukaku has gone. He won't go for £4m though, and I doubt Everton will want to pay what we would want to let him go, as they will have a few other more experienced targets that are more important for them to make sure they get.

I don't think any clubs will meet Watford's valuation unless it's a panic buy on deadline day.

Big question is what is our valuation? We're all saying £8m but that's just us. When someone goes here's 5-6m on a cheque it's a whole different kettle of fish.

The thing is....Deeney is now an established 20 goal-a-season Championship striker. He's English and he's robust enough to play 48 matches in a very competitive league, without hardly getting any injuries. He's only 25 so has the best years as a player ahead of him.

Add to all that, he still has 2 years to go on his contract and he's not looking to move.

We are owned by very astute owners, who only sell prize assets at the optimum price. We will not be selling a player like this cheaply. Forget using Lambert as a benchmark, as he's 32 and soon is out of contract at Southampton.

I would look at transfers like Gayle from Peterborough who went for £8m to Palace or Zaha who went for £15m (with add-ons) to give you an idea of Deeney's worth in the transfer market.

Those saying it will be around £8m are bang on, I would say.

It's a very valid point you make about injuries. He's played 91 times in the last 2 years, that's a very decent amount of games for a player with his kind of game.

Gayle, fair enough, but Zaha had just turned 20 when United signed him so not a great comparision

I think with our owners his value will be "undisclosed believed to be in the region of"

The thing with Deeney is if he goes and gets 10-15 goals or so he might be in with a chance of an England call up. That might be in the back of his mind too.

There are so many factors to take into account.

Judging by our rumoured signings, our owners are really making a statement. I imagine Deeney may want to stay for one more year and have a real go at promotion as captain. If it happens, he can play with us there. If not, he can move on as a 26 year old still approaching his peak.

It's also worth remembering that Troy has just got married, and has a young son going into school. Perhaps he feels that upping sticks now isn't right for personal reasons? People often forget those kinds of considerations.

He still lives in Birmingham, his kid will be going to school there so I'm not sure it's so much of a factor
