Would love to see Tommy back for a third and final spell, have met hi, briefly a couple of times over the years and he has always come across as a decent guy. He still got above average skills at this level and he would be a great signing in this window if we could pull it off. He is prob on a decent wage a QPR so as someone else suggested maybe a loan until the end of season (also giving QPR the option should the decide they need him back to cover injuries). Then sign him up for a couple of years at the end fo the seaon. Would defo be a regular first teamer and also help the youngsters along. Hope this can happen, more so than cotterill despite the age difference.

I'm not sure that I agree with you there mate, Cotterill is still only 24 with his best years still in front of him, and he's currently without a club, Tommy on the other hand, is 31 on guaranteed premiership wages and not overly blessed with pace, plus if QPR had the recall clause you suggest, what happens if 2 weeks after the transfer window shuts they decide they need him back? Don't get me wrong I'd happily welcome him home to The Vic, I just think the younger fella could be the better long term option.

Fair Enough cant disagree I just feel/Know that Tommy will come in and do the business where as Cotterill may flop, both would be great but Tommy would come in and be a consistent first teamer, I feel we need to steady the ship so to speak.

Do we really need another Yeates on the opposite wing?

Smith will do a job, there is no doubt about it, he is guaranteed to get goals and assists in this league

I have heard that a certain Heidar may be surplus to requirements at QPR as well as Smith...

If you put Smudge and H in the team we have now, we would seriously challenge for the playoffs. I would say to Bassini, if that deal could be done, do it whatever the cost. It would be worth it in the long run. These players are highly regarded in Watford and are top quality Championship players. I wouldn't see this as a gamble at all.

The problem I can concievably see is that lower premier league sides will be sniffing roung HH as he has got a decent goal scoring record at the moment. And another stumbling block is that of his wages. But I agree with that it will be a very strong side and possible play off contenders.

Smithy would be awesome but I can't see Hughes getting rid of QPHaHaHa's top scorer in this transfer window, even if he plans to bring in his own men. In-form strikers in the Prem are like gold-dust, even if H isn't Hughes type of player. If he goes it will probably be in the summer IMO

You're probably right, but QPR have cash to splash. I'm sure Hughe will bring in a couple of star names which will push H down the pecking order, so they may release him on loan. He's only just signed a contract extension though, so I doubt we'd get him permanently in any event.

Without wanting to attract a ban from this site, this really is a case of wages. As you say he's just signed a contract extension at a club flush with money. H isn't going to want to take a large cut in pay so soon after signing.

"They say never go back, but QPR midfielder Tommy Smith obviously is not a believer of that philosophy.

He is rumoured to be planning on jumping ship at QPR and moving back to his boyhood club Watford, for whom he has had two lengthy successful spells with previously.

Smith has allegedly failed to impress new QPR manager Mark Hughes is various training regimes and has been told to find a new club, preferably permanently, but more likely on a loan move for the time being.

The fans’ favourite at Vicarage Road has reportedly set his heart on moving back to north-London in order to help Watford clamber away from the relegation trouble in the Championship.

The only sticking point in the transfer would be whether Watford could afford the players’ wages, which are rumoured to be around the £10,000 per week mark.

This is unlikely, but sources close to the player have revealed that he could be willing to help Watford out with the deal, by paying half of the required wages himself. This would leave Watford in a position to make the deal a finically applicable one.

Smith has previously had two successful spells at the club which gave him his chance as a youngster, playing nearly 200 games for the Hornets in periods between 1997-2003 and 2006-2009.

In between his two spells at Watford he had played for both Sunderland and Derby County.

He signed for QPR for £1.5m from Portsmouth in 2011 and played a huge part in Rangers’ promotion season which saw them run away with the Championship. He is remembered by the fans as the man who secured promotion at, ironically Vicarage Road, scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory that, FA investigations apart, secured the victory that guaranteed the club’s promotion back to the Premier League after a 15-year hiatus."

There's a trick to doing it. I remember someone posting a link a few years ago that showed Izale McCloud on the squad page.

No trick, the HTML is on the official site without a link, but I managed to find it. It wasn't there before, so I don't know if I've stumbled upon something I shouldn't have, and it may disappear just as fast as it appeared.

that is very clever, if only it could come true.

I also hope this is true, it would make Sir Tom an absolute legend.

How can he pay half of the wages? Shouldn't it be that he is willing to play for £5,000 a week?

Surely we can afford £10,000, we just need to get rid of some chaff.

  27. Am I being incredibly gullible, but why would the club update his webpage with his Pomey and QPR stats if not in preparation for his return?

The only explanation I can see for the wording of it is if he came on loan he would still officially be on QPR's books and they would still presumably pay his wage cheque, so if Watford have to pay 10k a week to QPR Smudge may be prepared to stump up 5k of that.

  32. That would be madness - to pay half of your own wages (and tax at 40% and NI). Surely he would ask QPR to waive half his wages for the loan period.

  33. hornetboy1

I agree, £10k is over budget, but not by that much. Considering what Smith would bring to the team it wouldn't be a major hurdle. I also agree we need to get rid of the chaff, which unfortunately we got most of in the summer.
