Rumours circulating that we’re trying to sign Tom Davies on loan from Everton. Not seen any credible sources but the gossip is out there so thought it needed a thread of its own. Personally I hope it’s not true. We have Hughes, Quina, Cleverley, Chalobah, Dele-Bashiru and soon hopefully Grimes as well. Davies is far from the clear upgrade that would be needed to make it worth dropping one of our own for.
Also hope its not true. Loans tend to come with commitment to game time, developing our own youngsters should come first.
Would be a great deal. Not gone on to be as good as his early potential showed and his low socks are highly irritating. However, he can play and he works. If you think Hughes, lightweight unproven but talented Quina, slow and injury prone Cleverley, rusty not sure if the same Chalobah and totally unproven TDB is good enough to get us promoted you are dreaming. Someone like Davies on a season long loan plus the £25 million reported for Doucs would be a good deal. He's not going to start ahead of Doucs, Allan, Sig, Gomes, Delph and whoever else they sign.
Yeah, as much as Tom Davies in the Championship could be quite good, we could have a possible 8 midfielders (if Capoue stays) competing for 3 spots which does seem excessive. Could mean one of them is off, in which case you'd definitely hope it's Chalobah (supposedly Sheffield United are interested) or TDB (maybe a loan would be better for him than being 7th/8th choice here) rather than Hughes or Capoue!
If we do sign Grimes I don't really see the need for this unless we're intending to offload , but not sure who else from midfield would be leaving at this point.
I feel the complete opposite to this as I do to Grimes. A joke of a player, waste of talent and I'd be disgusted if we attempt to 'get him back to form' for a **** house club like Everton.
Long season ahead with congested fixtures. A 22 yr old English CM that can run around a lot. He might be rubbish, but he’s about to be our rubbish. Just like Doucoure needing to kick start his career, this could be a move that kick starts his. He still has a whole career a head of him. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s not afraid to get stuck in, press a lot and hassle opposition players. Still raw in areas, but as an option off the bench, not bad. I don’t think any Everton fan can say he never put the effort in, he always wanted win and he worked hard for the team. I stand to be corrected on that though.

I doubt there is much in the Tom Davies rumours, there are no credible sources saying its happening I think it's just come from people seeing that Everton need to offload central midfield players and now that the Doucoure deal seems to be done people are putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5.
Surely Davies and Everton would want to be playing week in week out, no guarantee of that here. If we do sign Grimes then we don't really need any more central midfielders.
I’m just saying, like all football fans we change quickly and turn on our own players. Doucoure has been our best midfielder in a long time. However last season he was atrocious. We all went from loving him to wanting him dropped and nowhere near the squad. Everton fans have gone from loving Davies to wanting him out in less than a year. You don’t just become a bad player. Doucoure’s career will hopefully kick start at Everton. If we bring in Davies with an option to buy, it could well kick start his career. Then we could have a 22 yr old English CM who will know what’s required of him if we get back to the Prem.
I can see Capoue going still because of the wages, although I am praying that he stays. Quina and Bashiru have lots of potential and are exciting but neither of them have ever had a run of first team games before. Hughesy clearly has to start and Chalobah and Tom Cleverley do get injured often. Tom Davies may be a good option. Having said all of that that I doubt there is anything in the Davies rumour and if it is toss up between him and Grimes I would rather have MG.
He’s not getting near the Everton team, and he’d be great in the Championship. However I’d only be interested if we had an option to buy.
He's like Will Hughes' similar but not quite as good unkempt younger brother, wouldn't understand this at all. The Phil to Will's Gary, if you will.
Wouldn’t really make sense unless we are attempting to bin off Cleverley. He’s young enough to improve and he’s likely a better option than Dele-Bashiru and can stay fitter than Cleverley. Doubts over Chalobah fitness too maybe? So I guess I can kinda see why we might still be looking at adding another CM even if Grimes does come. If he comes with a good attitude, wouldn’t be against it.
We need to keep Hughes and Doucoure. Him or Grimes will come in I imagine. Probably prefer Grimes on a permanent to TD on loan
Not having a pop at you mate, so don’t take this personal. I keep seeing things like that, however it’s a congested fixture list and Ivic likes to play 433/4231/352. Each of his preferred formations need 3 CM’s at all times. Looking like Capoue is going as well so not including him. Grimes Hughes Quina will probably be our starting 3 Chalobah Dele-Bashiru and Cleverley as their replacements. Of which we know Hughes, Chalobah, and Cleverley are likely to pick up some sort of injuries here and there. According to transfermarkt, Davies has never been injured, not even for a day!
Decent signing this for me, young, seemingly has some ability, needs a move. If there's an optional purchase clause if we get promoted then it would be a good deal.
He isn't going to leave Everton to sit on our bench and I'd rather develop our own. If it was permanent / option to buy I might have a different view on it, but he is basically a less good Hughes / similar level to Cleverly with a better bill of health who will be expecting to start. If we lose Capoue and Chalobah we will absolutely need another midfielder, but of a totally different profile to Davies.
Wouldn't rule out another midfielder coming in alongside Grimes. Just don't think it will be a player like Davies who would be expected to play every minute. Not forgetting as well that Sema done a job in the centre for Udinese last season when they were thin in that area.
Develop who though? I suspect Quina will get plenty of football irrespective of whether we bring Davies in. Davies at this time has to be considered a far stronger footballer than Dele-Bashiru and a better bet fitness-wise than Cleverley. We can’t cut too many corners this season or leave ourselves short on numbers. We have to be as strong in every department as possible. We will developing plenty of our own players elsewhere.
I was referring to Quina and Dele Bashiru, but I meant more as a general rule of thumb. With the window closing in October the boss will have had a month and a bit to assess TDB and see if he is up to scratch, and if he thinks he isn't, then this deal would make a lot more sense.
