This may eventually be one to be merged into the TV thread but Netflix are going to take on the three body problem trilogy. Has anybody read them? Dark forest theory is a solution to the Fermi paradox, don’t want to spoil any more but I loved the books and I’m extremely concerned but quite excited about how it may turn out.
I don’t know these but if it’s anything like the adaptation of Foundation be afraid. After a decent start, much subtlety of the source material has been lost with dull takes on ‘special’ individuals, clunky dialogue and bog standard monstering.
Visually it looks great and a few of the new ideas work. But it’s a turgid watch that doesn’t capture the things that make the books work. I groaned when I saw Salvor Hardin with a big gun.
I haven’t really read anything like them before. Lots of big ideas and quite a dose of theoretical physics, but the scope and size of them is huge. it’s like a mixture of Arrival and Interstellar in feel, comparing to films, but with a lot more scale, conflict and sheer passage of time. If that’s your sort of bag I’d wholeheartedly recommend it. Synopsis should give a decent idea but so much goes on it’s hard not to spoil anything.
