Yes, not ideal. Sits over the canal in an acrid fug. To be completely fair, although some people are on boats for lifestyle choice alone, others are because it’s cheap and converting to something greener will be expensive for them.

People who have central heating and an open fire blow my mind. They are submitting themselves willingly to the particulates wood fires gives off. May as well buy the kids some fags.

Unfortunately the rest of us also have to breath it.

CeX: remember using printed voucher redeem codes containing both the letter 'oh' (O) and the number zero (0) printed in a font where the difference between them is only discernable using a microscope equipped with a graticule is really the way to go.

You can look at it like that, but the other aspect is that the charity needs to promote its cause by making the public aware of the problem it looks to solve and, in doing so, make people aware that the charity exists. (Promoting its ‘brand’, if you want to use that horrible word.)
It’s always been my belief that almost everyone has a favourite charity, or maybe a few, that hold a particular interest for them or whose cause has affected them or their family in some way. Those are the ones they will donate to. I don’t think they are swayed by the sort of ‘shampoo competition’ you describe.

Little Mix - seemed to be launched off Xfactor as a cutesy, child friendly pop band, but their sexual lyrics, their constant bitching, their general nastiness and horrible demeanour makes them terrible for kids, who make up 100% of their fan base.

I think if kids were given the chance to listen to wholesome groups, like the Seekers (or maybe the New Seekers for the wild ones) they would really appreciate the difference.

Awful choice in men as well.
  7. I don’t think they are swayed either but still the charities spend the money we have gifted on tv adverts rather than 100% on aid. It’s not as if the public doesn’t know what cancer charities, oxfam, rspca etc do. They are just fighting to make sure that they get the donation rather than a “competing” charity. Whoever can paint the bleakest saddest storyline seems to be the strategy. Sorry but it really bugs me.

You view on the TV adverts can certainly be considered a valid one but the donations to major charities, along with legacies, grant funding, sponsorship and so on, can never be spent “100% on aid”. To deliver the programmes they do charities have to be run like any large organisation with all the costs that implies.
  9. Of course and I’m involved in that industry. Many operational costs but I don’t like to see aid charities spending significant sums from the donations they receive, on tv advertising to divert donations away from smaller charities who can’t compete with their advertising budgets, or choose to use their donation income to actually help the objective of their charity (the reason the donation was gifted). The sums paid to tv companies by charities must dwarf what was paid 20 years ago.
I’d be more relaxed if the advert stated “a donation of just £5 a month will help us ……produce a new tv advertising campaign to win more customers from our rivals, Oxfam” :).

Even the Spice girls, who these troglodytes attempt to emulate, didn't feel the need to write songs about masturbating and constantly bitch about each other, but maintained a tough girl attitude. Plus they had a more diverse fan base.

Little Mix are just trashy people in a trashy band singing trashy songs targeted at kids

They're vile. Their most "empowering" songs are basically about getting over an ex and getting out on the hunt for some more c0*k.

As for that narcissist tart Jesy Nelson. A song about getting it from criminals, accompanied by this... Please just f--k off this planet.

Glad it's not just me. I was barely aware of them, but my girls (8 & 9) are listening to their songs.

Like you I was struck by how all of their songs are about bitter break ups and shaming their ex partner and then I was listening to a seemingly innocent song about 'sweet love' when I realised this was obviously and not at all subtley about flicking their beans. Completely unnecessary.

It's like they think they're Cardi B when their fans are all preteen.

And they have this attitude about getting into slanging matches with each other and other celebs on social media. I suppose it's their interpretation of 'girl power' but it just makes them look like toxic people.

This is why I like Lily Allen. Yes she can be a sl**, and has the same morale issues as other singers, but her songs are much more grown up in general, and not just because she uses bad language a lot. I saw her at one of her earlier gigs (her "smile" tour), it was really good and she spoke to the crowd as an adult would - not catering to the 'bubble gum' and 'stereo-typed sexual' content. Her song "The Fear" is one of my all time faves, and being a big Alice in Wonderland fan I adore the music video.

As for Little Mix, I've said my bit on Jesy Nelson and her focus on "boobs = bucks" personnel she has chosen in a solo career which is likely to crash and burn.

This sickens me, several CEOs on
    £400,000 +

And they wont be the only ones on the board, there will be a head of HR, head of legal, head of finance, COO, head of advertising all on similar.

I could understand say £75K no one needs more than that to live. The money they are taking is from people on far less

Don't give me ******** about needing to attract the best, these ****s do nothing.

I will never donate to big charities because of this

Yep. Worked with a bloke once who said he worked for STC and was on over 6 figures. Had an expense account and free air travel to wherever he fancied. Gave it up to start a family. He was just a low level manager there. Said he loved travelling and not having to do much.

Very resentful man too. Mainly because he had to quit his cushy job to have a family he didn’t want sticking him behind a desk. Made him micromanagement heavy and just downright strange. Ended up going on leave and disappearing. No one liked him so don’t know what happened to him.

So many of those salaries are completely unjustified.

I would say one thing in favour of Macmillan which is the main things it does, gives money to individuals and gives advice and support are pretty good.

The team that gives money to people in need because of cancer (many people have hardship because cancer stops them working) work hard to give it to individuals as quickly and with as little bureaucracy as possible. If you donate to them a good proportion will simply go to a person affected by cancer.

My mate's dad was a prominent psychotherapist who worked a lot with the NSPCC for years. A few years before he retired he stopped working with them as he said that they had mutated into a big corporate entity, primarily focussed on fund raising and seemed to have lost track of their real purpose.

Slightly off tangent but some of the charities in America are unbelievably corrupt. It’s worth watching the What the Health documentary on Netflix, some of the Cancer and heart disease charities out there are actively sponsored by the food industries that cause the diseases in the first place, and they promote unhealthy foods and recipes on their websites. The aim of these charities is not to eradicate their diseases, as that would put them out of business, they actually want some people to get cancer and heart disease otherwise they would no longer exist and wouldn’t get the funding from the food companies if they stopped promoting their products.

Talentless insert your own word here. Do we have to endure the popular media forcing this garbage down childrens throats all the time ? All of course in the aim of parting as much money as they can from this newly created market of listeners by manufacturing a new piece of musical garbage each week.

Why not encourage girls with real role models from the fields of science, medicine, engineering, the arts for instance ? Make them the citizens of the future who genuinely contribute and also push society further forward. These talentless things are a real nadir for Britain and emblematic of the dumbed down society many are addicted too. How an earth any can see them as role models is beyond me but many do including the brainwashed tweens that lap it all up. They may as well perform on some stage show in Hamburg or Paris for all the unpleasant tawdriness they bring with their lack of talent. But society today loves to reward the talentless no matter what.

They could listen to some classy female singers who are talented, genuinely intelligent and don't rely on gratuitous nudity/sexualization to sell their garbage. Women like Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow or Canadian Sue Foley for instance.

Had a free eye test via a work voucher including free glasses. They bombard you with health scares so that you shell out an extra £10 for a 3D scan of your eye, (I didn't go for it), then an additional £35 per pair for anti reflective coating, then tell you the free glasses that are covered by the voucher are pretty cr*p and that I'll save much more money by buying the £100 pairs with discount.

My free eye test voucher including free glasses just cost me £100. I left wondering if they actually give 2 sh*ts about me or just want as much money as they can screw out of me. I look forward to the "survey".

They’re ****. On my last three visits I’ve been told that I had astigmatism, then a different type of astigmatism that would need contacts in the future and possibly surgery and then last time I was told that the eye is fine and the optometrist had no idea what the other guy was on about. Brilliant stuff, won’t be going again.

I've never liked CeX. When I had a Xbox 360 and bought games from them, the staff always put their finger prints all over the discs. I used to spend about ten minutes wiping each game disc with a soft cloth and cleaner to get rid of the marks. I know they were second hand games, but still a bit of respect for something I was going to purchase would not go amiss.

I’ve dealt with two now in relation to my (small) business. I won’t go into detail about specifics, but it relates to a dispute with another business over something we are 100% in the right over.

To start with they tell you how good your case is, “oh as a minimum I think £x is a realistic sum to demand, if anything that is on the low side, you’ll have no problem getting that”

Then as time goes by their stance gradually changes, “well the other side won’t pay that, so maybe we need to set our sights lower”

All the while their bills rack up, roughly £3.5k every time they invoice us, until we’re at the point we’re it’s possible we won’t even break even on what we’ve spent and needn’t have bothered in the first place.

The other party had originally offered us £20k without lawyers being involved, but the lawyers told us we could reasonably expect £100k and they would be able to get it to us.

in our last communication they even touched on the possibility of us accepting the original £20k as ‘one option, although one we assume isn’t acceptable to you’. But now we’re closing in on half that in legal costs.

The whole reason they said we could get at least £100k was the threat of suing the other party, they’ve only just told us that would cost at least 6 figures though, so the other party will know that isn’t really a threat at all.

So we’ve basically paid them to negotiate a much higher figure they originally said was realistic, but have been unable to achieve it. All the while they’re getting paid handsomely.

More often than not they’re the only winners.

No different to estate agents overvaluing your house then telling you it’s too expensive and you need to cut the price.

Well when I say we worked with two lawyers, we got rid of the first one because they weren’t very good, they were slow to come back to us with updates, and we generally didn’t have much confidence in them. They still told us how good our case was at the start and the minimum amount we should expect to get from the other side.

We got a recommendation for the second one, as I said above they made all the right noises at the start and blew smoke up our arses about how good a case we had.

A common trait with both of them seems to be telling us how fantastic our case was at the start and slowly changing their tune as time goes by, while of course still charging by the hour.

This leads me to believe it’s relatively common trait amongst them, after all they get paid whatever happens.

Mrs UEA used to fall for that until a friend tipped her off to a massively cheap online place. Now she goes in to the opticians to get the prescription and then goes online and buys the glasses for more than half the price. You send a copy of your prescription, they make them to order and post them out. Not sure where they make them - I imagine it’s outside the UK - but she’s worn them them day in, day out for the past 18 months and has just gone back to buy more. So they passed the test of time with a regular wearer.
