@Keighley - you …. so and so! Have just watched the pasty making video… so now I’m going to have to do the 7 hour drive to Falmouth. That, or learn how to make my own. On second thoughts - best to do the 14 hour round trip.

Try Oggy Oggy or Warrens if you go.

I don't think they are as good home made, personally. Also, I have never prevailed on Mrs K to have a crack (I am a hopeless cook/baker).

Thanks for the recommendations. I know what you mean about home made. Some things are best left to the professionals.

Errrrrrrrrrr... that's the key word 'authentic' (or 'genuine') and Swede is just a contraction of the phrase 'Swedish Turnip'. Something that I find 'interesting' (as a materials scientist who's very interested in food and cooking) is that a lot of the pastry in traditional 'dishes' is made with vast amounts (to our modern tastes) of fat - this would give a 'case' that was very good at holding a very 'liquid' filling. As the English diet was (pretty much until Victorian times) mostly beer (calories and vitamins), soup/potage with grains and pulses (bulk), bacon (calories and protein) and bread (bulk) I've always wondered if the pastry container was just a means of carrying a thick viscous soup...

As a Ginsters troll, I presume you know that “Ginsters’ pasty” is an anagram of: Yep! stirs angst. ;)

Indeed, but a white turnip (which is what most people think of when that term is used) is not the same. Grigson’s recipe does not specify which.

I suspect you may be correct about the rest.

Films/programmes of famous books which are altered for goodness knows what reason. Recently watched Great Expectations on BBC1 and it was a travesty. Was the young original author not up to the task so needed revision?

I get a lot more alerts these days from the bank and Amazon if someone uses a debit card or logs in unusually etc.

So this evening Amazon let me know that someone had logged into my account from somewhere in England.
Well that narrows it down, cheers.

I went to the launch of that. Watched an episode and then q and a with the cast and crew. When the writer said he'd altered it, I just though, I'll give the rest of it a miss then. Write your own stories for sure, or rework it into something new, but don't call it Great Expectations. That just ruins my expectations.

I didn't see it but as it was reworked by the BBC let me guess... Miss Havisham is played by a black actress, Magwitch has been rewritten and is now a strong, independent women and a climate activist and Pip is gay. Am I right?

I didn't see it, but I read about it in a TV times mag, which was lying in the dentist's waiting room.

I know the Kremlin Wartburg is getting low on washer fluid (or tap water with a squirt of washing up liquid if the truth be known) when it stops squirting anymore.

Some technology is pretty shyte really considering. These TVs now take longer to get started up (stupid 'welcome' screen and brand name plug, then press this and press that and scroll through the other) than the old CRT radio rentals tube jobs with push buttons.

Heathen - a clanger's (well the one I ate) shaped like a largish lop-sided sausage roll. The savoury filling is in one end and the sweet in the other separated by a pastry wall. The savoury filling was offal and fatty pork with potato heavily seasoned with sage and pepper - reminiscent of a faggot - the 'pudding' end was a very cinnamony apple pie.

W.ankers. Up there with people who have open fireplaces and wood burners. People who see a modern World with green energy and garden waste recycling who think ‘nah, let’s pollute the neighbours’.

There is no p.issing section in a swimming pool. What about that don’t people understand? What you throw in the air or water affects others.

Wood burners are carbon neutral. The smoke goes up the chimney and up into the sky where it turns into stars. Don't see why that bothers you.

    Pooing at work.

Back in the day, pooing at work was absolutely fine, in fact to be promoted. It offered the opportunity for a little break, maybe a chance to catch up on some light reading and of course a poo, all on the company clock.

But now, when most office workers are only in two days a week, pooing at work is unnecessary, indulgent and somewhat eccentric. No one else needs to smell your poos now. That was the 20th century, like fax machines or enjoying international football. People just don’t do it these days.

I caught a whiff the other day in the office loo and I thought ‘no, no, no, no, no, really? Really?’

As a kid, I bet most people never took a poo at school. You’d be insane (unless a boarder, when fair play, it was a long term). Remember what you knew as a kid and don’t do it at work.
