Things That Just Seem To Have Disappeared Or Faded

When I was a kid, we were constantly talking about quicksand, rabies, swans breaking arms.

Newspapers were full of stories about kids dying from a plastic bag over the head, or being swept out to sea on a lilo.

We used to do the can can several times a day and also every sexy joke was accompanied by the stripper music from Morcambe and Wise.

What other things have quietly slipped away over the past few years and not been adequately mourned?

Yes! This was on my list too. Acid rain was a big issue in the 80s.

 

I'm thinking of doing a documentary about the recent BBC scandals, with Huw Edwards and Jermaine Jenas. Working title:

Randomly started watching old episodes of Airline recently (they’re all on YouTube) and in the early series virtually every issue was caused by the non-existence of mobile phones. People having meltdowns left right and centre simply because their plane was running late so the people at the other end would be worried.

One guy was crying because he thought his family would be lost in Milton Keynes forever as he was late to meet them.

So things that have disappeared, lives being ruined and families being split up forever due to lack of mobile phones.

Also back then you could smoke in the terminal.

 

Buying an LP record or CD for my brother at birthdays and Christmas.

 

My 10 year old daughter wants to switch to vinyl or CDs. She wants to own the music she likes, not stream it. I'll buy her a cheap player and a few albums for her birthday.

 

This is very heartwarming. I wish I had a daughter like that. Will you be buying her any Taylor Swift?

 

She does love Taylor Swift, unfortunately.
