It would be electoral suicide to campaign against Brexit. The Tory vote is crumbling and right now a threat to Brexit and the renewed prospect of immediate free movement is just about the only thing that could regalvanise it. Remainers, like me, thought another pop at the Brexit question would inevitably have the Country come to its senses. We were spectacularly wrong and got Johnson instead. Starmer, in particular, was the architect of that failed strategy. Get these shysters out and then ‘make Brexit work’ by marginalising it and ensuring we develop good deal that restores much of what was lost. But more than that, convince voters that whatever the relationship with the EU, there will be housing and work for all.
You mean proportional representation ? I have just recalculated the 2016 referendum given your new data and ....remain has still lost . What " remain" needed was a 3rd option at the ballot in order to manufacture a win Democracy dead ? Not yet but some are quite happy to kill it off Sup up your beer and collect your fags ? Not anymore
But if the referendum was on the basis of proportional representation then 48% of the government that implemented it should have been remain supporters. And those that voted remain or wanted a softer Brexit (i.e. in the SM and or CU) should have had an influence on the Brexit negotiations. But no. What we got was "we won so stfu" and the Tory government got rid of anyone in the parliamentary party who couldn't/wouldn't follow the hard line. The winner takes all consequences of FPTP elections and simple majority referenda leads to undemocratic outcomes. That is absolutely clear from the last 5+ years.
That's not what I said. You said democracy is nearly dead. I would agree. A system that needs less that 40% electorate support to have 100% control seems pretty undemocratic to me. And, btw, I supported PR and referenda on constitutional issues needing super majorities way before there were any outcomes to like or otherwise.
You're wasting your time. FWIW, though, your point was easily understandable to anyone not looking to twist it into something it wasn't.
A ~1.5% jump nationally? Again as N. Shropshire showed national voting intention under our constituency system doesn't mean much: EDIT: I'd be very interested when these are updated.
Labour's 8% lead "hypothetically" wipes out Dowden's 16% "lead" in Hertsmere - that's Armageddon for the Tories.
Didn’t go Labour under Blair and won’t do so next time. A chance the Libs might pick it up, like in Shropshire, even though they have not done well in the past and generally been a distant third to Labour. The Labour vote is pretty much capped around the ‘Wood and bits of NW Watford.
I don't think Johnson can last much longer with polling like this. One month? Two? And to think there were people on here saying that he would make a great PM!
Andrea 'Loathsome' Leadsom* was on Matt Forde's podcast (from this summer) waxing lyrically about how de Pfeffel was "...at least a two term PM..." *Am I right in thinking that her 'City Career' was little more than HR/PR/marketing work for the family firm?
Damning him with faint praise. He’s already in his second term isn’t he? Albeit the first was only 6 months.
Westminster voting intention: LAB: 38% (+1) CON: 28% (-5) LDEM: 13% (+3) GRN: 7% (+1) REFUK: 4% (-1) via @YouGov
A few Tory MPs will be sweating on those figures this morning. I still think the May elections will make or break Johnson but, if the polls continue in their current direction, he might not make it that far.
If you find polling interesting, which I do, then it’s interesting. It was interesting when Johnson had 43% or more, a phenomenon if you will. It’s indicative of a mood, volatile for sure.
As soon as it's pointed out that a vote for Sir Keir is a vote for David Lammy as our new Foreign Secretary anyone thinking of switching their vote to Labour will fall back in to line. And then there's Angela Rayner...
100% control? Where do you get that from. All MPs, even under the whip, are perfectly able to vote with their conscience. In case people hadn't noticed, even with his massive majority in the house, Johnson is at risk of defeat. He has been deafeated four times since December 2019. 100% my buttocks. Under PR, you give more power to crazy extremists, and, like in Europe, invite far right and far left loons to influence mainstream politics. PR opens the door to extremism. First past the post favours majority opinions.
I like both of them. Rayner is brilliant when she does PMQs, Boris ***** himself. She's sharp, and despite having pretty difficult early years, she has made it to Labour front bench. So she called Tories scum - who now would seriously disagree? David Lammy is a decent bloke - which Tory front bencher could you say that of ? Starmer has assembled a very strong front bench.
Who’s the worst Foreign Secretary you can recall? How about Boris Johnson, who helped give the Iranians another excuse to keep Nazanin in jail or who ‘lost’ his security to go to a Russian sex party? I don’t think Lammy has anything to worry about when the comparison is made.
