Handy cash injection then. We’ll probably get more cash from that this summer than selling Sarr or Dennis on 4y deals.

It's meaningless. If Dux can ride out the mistakes made over the last few years, he can make balls on the line statements about Edwards and then survive once he's sacked before October.

The thing is, after so, so, so many mistakes, the tone of this interview seems to be suggesting that by picking a different profile of manager this time around they expect him to be a Silver bullet to solve all our woes.

Seems very hopeful and lumping all responsibility onto Edwards's shoulders.

From what I’m “told” (you know who I’m referring too) Edwards wants two strikers and views Joao Pedro as a 10. So any cash that comes in would be a nice helping hand

Archer and Lucas Joao (the two most linked thus far) stylistically fit the bill, would play well together and are in the price range. JP behind those two would be very nice indeed.

The problem with Duxbury has never been a lack of communication. He spouted the exact same bollox two years ago when he went to the pub and bought a few rounds for the FTRE lot as they looked on dewey-eyed.

"Come hell or high water" will just become another one of the ridiculous quotes that are used as a stick to beat him and the rest of the hierarchy with but he doesn't care that he'll look like a **** in a few months time - all that matters is getting a bit of breathing space, which sums up his desperate short-term approach. I geuinely feel sorry for anyone who still believes a word that comes out of this spiv's mouth.

He’s got a large percentage of the fan base eating out if his palm, when his regurgitated platitudes and promises collapse around October time they’ll all be on twitter asking anyone who calls him out to bank roll the club and blaming covid again.

The man is an idiot, he’s saying he looked down on the clubs we were playing as a championship club, yet last time around part of his spin to row back on his best of the rest” rubbish was to say we’re only Watford, and we should know our place.

Andrew French said he asked him about Mogi Bayat. Going to be very interesting when that portion of the interview gets released...

Quite. By asking that question Duxbury will either have to throw Bayat under the bus and commit to not dealing with him again or will have to defend working with the shyster and risk the hit if he gets convicted next year.

Nothing this bloke says you can trust. All sounded good about debt, new manager etc but doubtful about anything he says.
The comment about Championship is just embarrassing

    Rather complacent and arrogant.

Hope the players and Edwards don’t think the same .

As I say basically means Edwards will be out of the door in no time unless we are top 2/-4

Well, there certainly can't be any excuses made in terms of transfers on the basis of our financial situation, then:

What I would say to his contention in this part, is that yes, we can theoretically accept that this figure would only ever come into play upon the sale of the club, but that then means that the club would have to be sold for whatever it's valued at plus that £150m, surely? That seems like a very significant potential issue in itself, to me.

I think that is fairly common these days. See Southampton and Chelsea too - both had considerable owner-based debt. All it does though is depress the purchase price. So if the value is £150m someone just pays Pozzo £150m and the debt is repaid/written off. The issue is when we’re in the Championship we can’t be valued that high. We’re probably in the £50-100m bracket right now which makes it hard to see who would absorb/repay all that debt to acquire us.

    Exactly.

I'm not saying it's a dodgy move, or whatever, I'm saying it affects the attractiveness of buying us considerably by presenting a significant extra obstacle and artificially inflating whatever sum is required overall. There's no doubt that if we didn't have that debt, we would cost far less, so to wave it away entirely and dismiss it, as Fuxbury has, seems inaccurate at best, to me.

  17. LeedsOrn

The reality is though that the vast majority of clubs do owner finance through loans rather than shares. Gino for all his faults has sunk £100m+ into the club and doing so this way does ensure that he has some scope to recoup his money. Roman Abramovic (who for all his faults and dodgy motives etc with Putin was quite clearly an incredible football club owner who brought an unprecedented amount of success to Chelsea) did the same.

  18. Chumlax

    Chumlax Squad Player

Yes, but again, I'm not alleging impropriety so that's kind of irrelevant - not to mention the fact that Chelsea are in another financial universe to us, and, as a result, so are both their prospects of a sale and the prospects of those queuing up to buy.

We could easily not find a buyer, should it come to it, with those kinds of figures in the mix; they could prove the fundamental difference - that was never even a realistic consideration for Chelsea.

So, as a result, waving it away doesn't scan.

  19. LeedsOrn

    LeedsOrn Reservist

Not trying to wave it away - definitely a fair point and an interesting concern. But the reality is that if Gino wants/needs to sell, he’ll sell to whoever will give him the most money/repay the most debt. If he wants to sell and we’re in the Championship, he’ll most probably have to write off some of the debt.

Are people misreading this part of the interview on purpose? It looks pretty clear he's saying this was his attitude at the start of the last Championship season, and that attitude has now (thankfully/hopefully) changed.

"Last time we went down we’d ended five years in the Premier League ... when the fixtures came out I looked at them and thought ‘what are Watford doing playing some of these teams?’

I feel totally different this time
. We know what we’re going into"

Considering the amount of games and the need for rotation/back-ups etc. we'll need at least 3, if not 4 decent strikers if we're going to be playing 2 up top every game.

    Sincerely doubt he’ll do either.

He’ll say not all the deals we do are through him but we have got players through him that have made the club money. That’s my prediction anyway.

Given Mogi Bayat was at the last game of the season - and Duxbury is saying he was having his epiphany earlier than that, I’d say they still want Mogi to be part of things going forward so there’ll be some sort of comment that supports that.

  23. LeedsOrn

A fair prediction. But still good that Duxbury feels the heat on the issue and is asked it publicly. French’s coverage feels like the purpose of journalism in action: sunlight as a disinfectant.

I'm not even alleging any malice behind it in this instance, but re-reading it has struck me what a (presumably) unintentionally comical answer this is:

    upload_2022-6-14_2-26-15.png

Because that run of home defeats began on December 1st in the year of our lord 2021, and theoretically finally came to an end (not that we knew that at the time) on April 30th, 2022. It stretched for almost exactly five months.

Given what we're considering, which is a conceptual time period that only ended when the stasis was finally interrupted, the miraculous 0-0 draw with Everton that brought that end didn't occur until the 11th of May, so in a very real sense it should probably actually be counted as 5 and a half months.

So, when Scott was asked at what point last season it occurred to him that it was a disaster, his response was effectively 'two-thirds of the entire season'.

    Pretty funny, really.

    Fair enough.

I cannot read the full article on that WO site unfortunately.

Obviously they will hope and expect to do well clearly though as would all of us.

And I still think Edwards will have to start well - much like all the relegated clubs or those expected to be pushing for promotion.

Just the way management is these days - particularly with us!

I’m curious as to when this supposed epiphany did come, it clearly wasn’t at the point they dragged a 74 year old fossil out of retirement, I can only assume it was some point during Hodgsons reign?

I’m pretty sure we’ve been here before with Ivic after the last debacle of three managers, the idea was he would tackle the player power issue, that went well.

I'm not a fan of Duxbury, but he is now in a position where everything he says is going to be consumed in a way that it can be twisted & criticised or is a stick to beat him with down the line. With his track record of fluffy lines and a large proportion of our fans being hysterical about anything he says it is a lose lose situation.

Do you think there is any statement that he could make now where the overriding response from fans is "Ok, fair enough. Lets crack on with the season".

There isn't because he has spouted so much nonsense in the past and because of the hysterical nature of a lot of our fans.

I'd say his position is untenable now, but he's buying himself a third chance with the masses with some tired excuses. If we have another bad / mediocre season, then he surely the hole he has dug for himself is too deep to escape from.

Don't think any of that cobblers is even half truthful. What a two sided character he is. Notice all the "... I thought" and "I suggested..." it's all me, me, me. Such self entitled dribble. "Looking forward to the new season..." Yes Scott, I bet you are; waiting to fire Rob mid November when we sit in 7th place and his "expectations of winning the league" will begin to tear at the seams, regardless whether we are playing well overall. I know a few Spam fans' and they generally still feel utter empathy for what he did for them, and feel sorry for us in that regard.

Needs to go really - we need a new CEO with a new fresh vision who has more than a 5% idea of what the sport of Football is.
