You seem to have totally fallen for the lie that the "culture war" is being waged BY "The Woke". It is driven by, and is relied on, by the right wing. "Black Lives Matter". "Taking the knee". Who could reasonably get upset by those things - showing solidarity with groups traditionally given the shittier end of the stick. "What is a woman?" FFS who cares, it is such a minor issue for 99.9% of people. What else do you want to get upset about, and who is telling you to get upset?
If he/she/they/it want to identify as upset, he/she/they/it is/are entitled to do so, and we/you them/everyone/no-one should/should not respect/give a fig/raisin/sultana/date about that. Maybe.
I see the Forde report is out, surprised it's garnered so little mention in the news given how much was made around antisemitism in labour. So far, the report makes for pretty grim reading for Labour. Toxic factionalism, sexism, racism, using antisemitism to undermine labour leadership, 'trot' hunting, deliberately moving campaign funds from pro-corbyn candidates to sitting anti-corbyn candidates in safe seats during the 2017 election the list goes on. I'm surprised by just how divided the Labour party actually is nor how vile (for lack of better word) parts of it had become, I mean I dont like Diane Abbott, but I wouldnt make a point of reducing her to tears and then trying to leak the story to the press.
It’s not so surprising really. The press, liberal or Tory, is utterly disinterested in how right wing Labour undermined Jeremy Corbyn, however underhand it was. It’s also pretty disinterested in anti-Semitism right now and doesn’t see it as a way of stopping Starmer, which is in one respect a credit to the course he has steered. As for the left, they can rarely avoid any hole in the ground marked ‘antisemitism’ without leaping head first into it, so not much for them to gain either and the report criticises them plenty too. So much has the weather changed, that when the Campaign Against Antisemitism criticised a recent Starmer visit in Berlin, Hodge wrote this somewhat astonishing tweet.
ive put it in the rite fred m8: I can't really comment on what some person other than me 'thinks' about another person *but* Embery's peon to his view of idyllic working-class upbringing/society in Dagenham bears little resemblance to the working-class upbringing that I received (where the onus was on self-improvement and inclusion not "Going Back to/Maintaining the Good Old Days", and to prove I'm not an outlier, it was neither that of "Know-it-all Dave" nor that of Ian (Prison Governor from Wigan mining stock). Nick Cohen had some very interesting opinions on what Embury did not say in his 212 pages of very expensive (and uncomfortable) pieces of toilet paper.
Why is it that SKS has to have a highly developed, fully costed plan to deal with the COL crisis, whereas the "Government" is not held to the same standard?
It’s because the Tories main job is to protect the wealthy and capital. Labour’s main job is to share it out. But the Tories can’t have it both ways, elected on a platform to ‘level-up’, which the leadership campaign has demonstrated was a fig-leaf of epic proportions.
I keep asking myself what on earth possessed the Tories to conduct their leadership campaign in this 'manner' - airing all of their dirty linen in public? There's much more of this come as the horses' dooveries before the main course of de Pfeffel live and unleashed before the select committee. I can't imagine what the dessert and cheese courses will be at this banquet...
I suspect because they have been convinced / reassured by political strategists like Lynton Crosby that, actually, the electorate tends to filter information according to their already held beliefs. It's why Truss came out with her absolutely nonsensical line about the civil service being woke and anti-Semitic. Any rational analysis would show it up as the ravings or an idiot but it works on the people it's designed to work on. Those who fear the phantom bogeyman of 'wokeness' will have their emotional strings tweaked, and for others it's a dog-whistle. Anti-Semitic = Corbyn = Labour = Civil Service. Job done. It doesn't matter that it's nonsense, because it works. The Tories will accept the short-term damage to their brand believing that the electorate will forget. They also benefit from the ubiquity of their candidates being all over the media for two months. It's a form of free advertising for them, hammering home the Tory brand. Even if it turns lots of people off, it will turn just enough on to them because out of the tsunami of absolute sewage there'll be the odd statement from both candidates that resonates or sounds reasonable or strikes a chord. And if they say enough over a long enough period some stuff will stick. It can be the only explanation because, looked at rationally, what they are doing is absolutely barmy. Basically admitting the country is in a complete mess, that nothing works, that everything is broken but hoping that people overlook the fact that their party has orchestrated and overseen all of it. The only way for the centre-left and left to counter this is to play exactly the same emotional game and to continually and for ever link Tories with greed, waste, extravagance, heated stables and duck ponds paid for by the tax payer, corruption, jobs and contracts worth billions for pals, absenteeism, cruelty, hypocrisy, collusion with foreign states, wilful theft of public service and resources, wage suppression and so on. Problem is, the right-leaning media always plays the same game. Something the Tories have done is awful and the response is not: "Hang on, why has this happened," but "Yes, but what would Labour do." And it works on just enough people to be highly effective in a warped first-past-the-post system. The Tories only need to convince a large enough minority of the population to enjoy a thumping majority. Then, just as things start falling apart mid-term, they can restart the whole process and try to convince everyone that, no, this time, this really is a new start.
Here's the 'deserted' with his support team prominent in the background... ...and of course the meal is completed with our old favourite on the menu.
Fool! These two are being served up as the horses' dooveries. Are you going to tell me they're all the courses?
I think it’s reasonable to argue that the conservatism has been in crisis since Brexit. It is variously presenting itself as the Toff-run party of socialist economics, the xenophobic party of internationalism and the libertarian party of authoritarian government. Those contradictions will play out spectacularly under Truss, a politician whose brain can barely keep up with her mouth. But they will retain the support of the press and of capital, because all they care about is retaining power to curtail tax and regulation. Brexit, the Flag, ridiculous levelling up promises, these are simply methods.
Or worse, they do the ‘how can Starmer accuse Boris of corruption and lying in public when an intern in his own office makes a technical and inconsequential breach of the hospitality disclosure rules with a slightly overdue submission?’ false equivalence.
The next GE does not have to be held until Thursday 23 January 2025. I wonder what the odds are on neither of these lightweights leading the Tories in to the next GE?
Didn't know where to post this, but thinking about it, it is high time for Starmer to read the room and grow some balls.
Unfortunately this involves European Nations so naturally it means Brexit - something Labour can't/won't comment upon until the omnishambles has reached its full nadir. You do know that that TSSA vido is quite old: ISTR 2018?
Tony Blair is only 67. Let's say no more about the illegal war business and get him back. I reckon he has a lot to offer
Labour MPs advised to do nothing, say nothing during the period of mourning, unless it’s something nice about the Queen. Meanwhile, the Tories get on with giving out fracking licences and increasing bankers bonuses. You can see why Labour does this, given the rancid newspapers have shown they can utterly break it at will, but is this what we want the Country to be like? https://www.theguardian.com/politic...ia-except-for-queen-tributes?CMP=share_btn_tw
It’s standard comms to politicians, civil servants, the police etc to say nothing sensitive during mourning periods and other specific occasions. The Tories shouldn’t bring in any laws on fracking or bonuses in this time either, even if they’re planning them and leaking them to the newspaper to ease people in/ test the reaction.
This is why the mourning period is too long. There is important stuff to get on with it. Moreover, the longer it goes on, the dafter people are getting.
Nice to see Sir Keir showing his solidarity with the working class by avoiding having his photo taken with them on the picket lines. Wolves and sheep's clothing come to mind
I would prefer if Starmer expressed support for striking workers, but right wingers criticising him on it, when all they want is the opportunity to gun Labour down for it, are taking the piss. It’s understandable that Starmer isn’t going to jump into such an obvious trap
Imagine the scandal if the leader of the Labour Party were to be exposed as supporting working people in their fight for better pay, conditions etc! Especially revolting white, heterosexual, middle-aged, male working class northerners!
Answer the actual question. What would you actually say? Moreover, how would you vote? The Labour Party has plenty of policies designed to help working people. If you care so much about this all of a sudden, then maybe highlight them. It also plans to repeal some anti-trade union legislation. I can understand why it wants to get in power to do that rather than to give the Sun and the Mail their day to front page a picture of Sir Starkers warming his nuts by a brazier on the picket line.
