Horrific attack on Salman Rushdie. Stabbed numerous times and fighting for his life. Police in NY haven’t yet commented on the motive, but it’s hard to imagine that this isn’t a consequence of the fatwa issued by Iranian Ayatollahs all those years ago. So pointless and so sad. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-62528689
As a tribute I'll try to read the Satanic Verses again. I've only ever managed about 4 pages before giving up on it
I enjoyed Midnight’s Children and Shame, but it’s not a style I’d go back to. It’s always emphasised by people who have read it that The Satanic Verses is about a lot more than its controversy. Kenan Malik, last night, pointing out that it’s Mrs Thatch who comes out worst in it. The fatwa was always deplorable, the act of a savage gerontocracy. I hope in some way it’s the Ayatollahs who lose, as a final consequence of this, and that Iran’s youth are liberated.
Iran like Afghanistan was a liberal country not that long ago . The CIA/USA have some questions that need answering.
Yep, though those ‘liberal’ societies were US creations largely. They were also unfair, unequal, repressive and unjust. The US tried to play it both ways, by supporting Islamic Fundamentalism in Saudi and liberalism elsewhere. That did for Afghanistan and Iran had its own version of it. Much of the subsequent history, like Yemen, has been a deadly ******* match between proxies for Saudi and Iran.
I never knew the "Trans Rights" were also their thing... https://twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1558438465284481024
