Our record since Troy got injured and we changed formation...

    Played 9. Won 8 Lost 1 Drawn 0

    Goals scored 21
    Goals against 6

Different players to have scored. 10

As I posted last night, since Xisco took over no club in the division has won more points than us. He currently has a 70% win ratio, though of course these comparisons are slightly skewed by the fact he’s only had 17 matches in charge so you can’t really compare him to the likes of GT, Boothroyd or even the likes of Zola or Gracia who had more than a season in charge.

Last night was the first match since the mid 1980s in which we had three goals scored by different players whose names all started with the same letter. The previous time it happened was Barnes, Blissett and Bardsley. Such a pity Sánchez couldn’t get one too last night after coming on!

That record has to have been in the minds of the club for some time, and the work in breaking it started with recruitment of a bunch of players with the same first letter.

**** knows. He ended up in the position of both sides giving him grief towards the end of the game. He was really poor at managing the game.

Rotherham, to their credit, took the game to Watford. They attacked us whenever they could. Their attacks consisted of getting the ball onto heads in the box. They were more like Cardiff than Cardiff. And the attacks looked to have good potential, but they were playing against a Watford defence which, I thought, played very well.
Where they fell down was in their own defence: To me it was notable that our goals were scored by players who were not properly marked or challenged. Probably this was down to shortcomings in their defenders (plus lack of preparation-time) and the movements of our forwards. Chthulhu has already mentioned how our players switched positions frequently, used well-trained passing routines and superior technique. Something which Xisco and the players have been developing for a while.
Rotherham couldn't cope and it could have been a lot more than 1 - 4 if certain players were better at finishing.

Looking at Norwich's fixtures I can't really see them slipping up enough to allow us to catch them. Shouldn't give up by any means but it's hugely unlikely. All we can do is keep doing what we're doing, can't rely on other teams to slip up. We're now in pole position but with 9 or 10 laps to go there is plenty that can still happen. Forget the rest of the season for the moment, Birmingham on Saturday is all that matters

Listening to Xisco's interview with Emma on Hive Live Xtra, he seems a very chirpy chap. One of the questions he was asked was do the players take note of other teams results. He said they don't really think about it and just concentrate on what they are doing, but I am sure they all do have a sneaky look at FT, especially if we win. You can sort of see the vibe that Xisco has with the players at the moment, and I hope it can continue.

Our friend from the Arctic told us this is how Glimt play. A bit of a culture shock for Zinc, I thought, but now we've turned into the Glimt of the south.

We thought Zinc took a long time to get into the team because he needed to adjust to the way Watford play, but it seems we needed time to adjust to him!

Agree that it’s unlikely we catch Norwich, however they do have games left that will be tough. If they slip up in 2 games before we play them and we’ve managed to close the gap to 6 points by the time we play them, then they will feel the pressure. We win our game against them and it goes to a 3 point gap, with QPR, Reading and Barnsley to play, you never know. Granted we have Millwall, Brentford and Swansea, but we have 2 home games and they have 2 away games.

As others have said, it really is taking it one game at a time, trying to close that gap on Norwich. Just need a couple of teams to help us out for once.

    Norwich’s remaining games:

    Forest (a)
    Blackburn (h)
    Preston (a)
    Huddersfield (h)
    Derby (a)
    Bmuff (h)
    Watford (h)
    QPR (a)
    Reading (h)
    Barnsley (a)

I can't see them dropping points in the next 4 games. So if they do, that will be a bonus for sure. Their final 6 matches won't be that straight forward though. Derby have something about them, Muff and us at home for them wont be easy, QPR away as we found out, probably our most difficult opponent over two games this season, then Reading and Barnsley will be be fighting out the play off places.

So I can see Norwich dropping points in their final 6 games, but unfortunately that also applies to us. 10 points is huge to overturn, however, that becomes 7 if Norwich lose tonight. It all depends on how they get on tonight as to whether I think they could be caught. Lose tonight then it's game on, but another regulation win will all but extinguish any real hope.

I think Forest will be up for this one tonight. They are not mathematically safe (although they probably won't go down) and Hughton will want them to finish strongly.

I found it hard not to like Rotherham. Their have a go attitude, their inept defending, their wonder goal, their honesty, their missed penalty and their brilliant commentators. Hope they stay up.

I thought Sanchezzers was the pick of the subs yesterday, despite, Gozzers' goal.

I thought he really composed the midfield whenever he was involved.

You may be right, he does move the ball well (in very short passes mainly) but I just see some very tippy-tappy about him where he his pass count is high but mainly just prods to other players.? I don't see him in a 50/50 crunch tackle like the others. My impression is that he will look decent playing within a good team, but wouldn't cut it in an average team.
I'm probably being a bit harsh, he's definitely more of Prem type player than championship, but I'll be happy for him to become another important player for us..

As few, if any, of us would have predicted 8 wins out of 9 following the dull draw debacle at Coventry, I personally see little point in anybody trying to work out how many points are needed or expected by us or our rivals from now on.

It’s a largely pointless task in a league infamous for shock results and anybody being able to beat anybody else on their given day.

Next up we face a side with a new manager. We should beat them but could there be a new boss bounce? Luton away is our local derby and for that reason, even without a crowd, won’t be easy. I don’t like the look of Boro away, as Colin is a proven winner. But equally Brentford and Cardiff will play fixtures that on paper they’d start as favourites but there will be other factors in play too. For example, we see that this weekend when Swansea play their local derby.

We also have to factor in that Brentford totally blew automatic last season. Will that experience make them stronger or psychologically affect them? Will Norwich already be up when we play them. Or even champions by then?

So many factors that make it very difficult for anybody to say ‘we must win x games’ or ‘get x points’.

In fact the only thing we can say fir sure is if we win all our remaining matches, we are definitely up.

    But that’s somewhat unlikely.

All I want is for us to still be very much in contention when we reached game 43, the start of our tough run in when we play the other three sides currently in the top four. That way promotion remains in our hands.

It appears the key ingredient to scoring from corners is ensuring the opposition team can't train together for a fortnight before a match. I reckon if you came up with a sideline in Covid scares, training ground bomb hoaxes and canteen sabotage you'd be quids in.

The first one seemed pretty simple - get Zinckernagel in that ideal crossing position from which he has such a lethal delivery. Baffling that we haven’t tried something like that before. With the Sema goal, hard to tell the degree to which that was intentional given how the ball evaded a few players of both sides before reaching him, but maybe I’m not giving our players and set piece analysts enough credit.

  30. reids

I was 50/50 whether that was intentional or not, although we have gambled on those sorta routines before with Pereyra on the end.

On paper Norwich’s run in has a similar difficulty level to our own. Shame they’ve got at least 7 points on us (and more likely 10 after tonight).

Whilst Ivic’s rotation policy has probably put us in good stead now, why anyone who remotely knows this division felt it necessary to be quite as defensive as he was is anyone’s guess. Maybe that is the thing, he didn’t know that you do not face the likes of Aguero, Vardy, Kane, et al, in the second tier of English football.

Also, as Xisco is starting to show, with our team you go at everyone and defend from the front because, quite frankly, when we get going, we’re terrifying at this level.

I think he's ideal when trying to close out a game. Does nothing flashy but keeps the ball and keeps it simple. He got a lot of stick when we signed him but he looks like exactly what we need as we enter the final part of the season, a calm influence with plenty of experience

I don’t care if we finish 1st or 2nd (be nice to be first , but next season who would care), I’m not sure I can handle the stress of the play offs.

It’s kind of sad, this is the most fun watching Watford has been in quite a long time and the reward we are looking for is to go back to the prem where we will be another also-ran where our prize will be survival. Don’t get me wrong I’m as desperate for us to be promoted as everybody else but enjoy how good we are now, if we get promoted we won’t be winning this many next season or scoring at will like we are now.
