@reids you'll be in next season with this guy then right?!

    He actually sat through that.

Best of luck to you Rob, I hope you can turn us around next season and get the players and ideas across you want to. Don't worry, Foster won't make a You Tube montage of you.

Funnily enough I did sort of work with him when FGR hired me last season (although didn't have any contact with him). But seems unlikely unless Watford want to significantly up their offer from last years offer!

Didn’t FGR do very well with set pieces? Did they do anything interesting/distinctive?

Sounds like he spoke to a few fans at the game.

Got the impression from what they said that he was confident, upbeat and positive.

We'll see how long that lasts come Pre-season and the first few games.

I mean how much do you think Edwards really will get?

And more importantly be allowed to build a squad he wants to...

The problem is how are we going to get rid of many of these players?. We pay the following contracts (in length or value of both)that they would be unable to obtain elsewhere: Sema, Cleverley, Cathcart, Gosling, Kabasele, Rose, Kalu, Kucka, Kayembe and Fletcher. Unless we can shift them to Udinese it’s going to be difficult.

The disgraceful squad management of the last 4 years is coming home to roost. We will need to make do next year and after next season we have the opportunity to release some of these awful players, and start again. There are very hard times ahead

When we played 3 at the back under Ivic, most of us hated it and screamed to have it changed.

When Deeney got injured, we finally played the formation that best suited us and duly won promotion.

For the life of me I cannot understand the enthusiasm for a coach who favours playing three central defenders, especially considering we usually struggle to even put two decent ones on the pitch.

Right now it just feels another new coach coming in with a totally different playing style than we've spent the last twelve months both planning for and then playing.

I fear we’ve appointed a bright and eloquent young coach with good ideas but maybe sadly one who will be found out quite soon in our cesspit of a club.

For balance, when Ivic was here, we had no left-back, a recovering Chalobah, and no Hughes. It wasn't the system which made us deathly boring to watch, it was the lack of players, and if Edwards doesn't have that, we can't blame him
  11. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

Besides, we've played 3 at the back in the past and it's been great to watch, get the right players in and there's no reason it can't be as good to watch as any other formation

I think that’s a bit overly simplified Malt.

Both of our other relatively successful seasons under Pozzo in the championship featured a 3-5-2 with Zola and Jokanovic, but even then the makeup of both squads was different to now/last season.

There’s nothing wrong with a 3 at the back system, it’s more how it’s implemented with the retention of the ball is the critical part.

I think the ‘get the right players in’ bit of your reply is the key bit. It’s going to require major surgery.

I read people talking about who from our present set up will be able to compete next season, and occasionally using logic such as ‘well they’ve been poor this season but can do a job in the championship’ and I just think that’s so misguided. Not the right way for building a strong and competitive team.

I balk at the thought of many of our average defenders (and midfielders) trying to play in Edwards preferred system, and struggling with it. Turning in average performances each week, with people saying ‘oh it’s ok, it’s only the championship’.

The first sign of intent would be to go and sign Kane Wilson, but it seems he’s off elsewhere (he’s held talks with Bristol City and a few other clubs). Him as a first signing would show we are really serious about getting decent players who fit the system (and he’s free). If we end up with Femenia or Ngakia in that position instead, we all know they won’t be world-beaters, and if a miracle happened and we went up we know they’re not able to cope with the PL.

You’re right but my post was really saying that the last time we played it, most people didn’t like it and couldn’t wait to change. Now we’ve failed with 4-3-3, it seems to be the fashionable idea again. We hardly have any players capable of playing it, so it’s a huge ask.

Didn’t Zola drop 3-5-2 after we lost badly at Derby?
  15. Burnsy

I’d argue that having the players capable of playing it is just as critical.

    My bad, apologies, misinterpreted that!

Can understand the context of the post now.

He kept persisting with it having initially used Carl ****inson as a centre half in that game, and used 433 initially that season. 352 got the best out of Deeney/Vydra partnership.

Is this system thing being over-hyped? Hasn't he only managed one whole season in football? What if he comes in, looks around and builds a system based on strengths and weaknesses of the players he has? Surely that'll be the smarter thing to do.

They bought me in as during 19/20 they finished 14th for xG/Corner taken and 20th for Goals/Corner taken and they thought that in order to get promoted they needed a boost in those numbers.

My research of L2 showed that about 75% of the teams defended in one of the 2 systems above - either 2 zonal markers - one centrally and one front post with everyone else man marking or just 1 zonal marker. So against the first set-up we aimed for either the space towards the back-post or the near corner of the 6-yard area and attacking centrally against the bottom system. No VAR in League 2 obviously, so we used blocking heavily to gain an edge for our targetmen. Caddens delivery was generally excellent and he was a great set-piece taker. Just doing that bumped us up to 4th in the league for Goals/Corner and 3rd in xG/Corner for 20/21!

Although they did score one of my favourite set-piece goals scored by a team I've worked for so far with this beauty - I've never been able to convince any of my other teams to try something like this!

Not watched any of what they've done this season but they finished 14th for Goals/Corner and 7th for xG/Corner so have regressed a fair bit since then, although probably should've scored more than they did.

Hopefully it's slightly different this year in the sense that expectations will be lower (and with a lower wage bill and a small net spend this season), hopefully the need for immediate promotion will be reduced), because there is a lot of work for Edwards to do, I'm certainly not expecting it to all fall into place right away. As it stands, I think we need at least 2 new starting CBs (possibly 3 if Samir goes), a ball-winning midfielder (and possibly some more creative ones if Louza goes), and an out and out striker. It's very possible we'll need 2 new wing-backs too, one to replace Kamara who may well leave, and one to replace Femenia, who might still have enough in the tank for a Championship season, but I certainly wouldn't want to bank on his body not breaking down

I don’t see how the immediate promotion need can be reduced such is the level of mismanagement. We have about £90m of player assets by my reckoning. 40-50% will be sold immediately (Sarr/Dennis). Louza and
JP will probably go to Udinese so that’s paper money, Which players does that leave that have any transfer value whatsoever? The new keeper, Asprilla, Cucho, Kamara - I’m struggling after that. Maybe zink/Kalu could be sold for a few million.

The fact is after this summer we won’t have enough saleable player assets to cover the debt. If we don’t go up in the next 2 seasons we are in serious trouble.

Interesting. Are xG/corner and goals/corner your main metrics? Makes sense - I guess otherwise you might think that say Fulham are a side who are really good at set pieces but really that’s just a function of their dominance of possession.

    That goal was very pleasing.
  27. reids

Yeah using per corner helps to give a fairer indication of how dangerous a team is - so in the instance of FGR, they actually achieved the most xG from corners in L2 this season (with 10.89 xG) - but they also took the most corners in the league. But Bradford finished 3rd in the total corner xG table (with 10.12 xG) but took 60 corners less than FGR, so from the stats would be described as a bigger set-piece threat than FGR as their xG/Corner is higher.

At least this time around we won't be hamstrung by the wages of players like Deeney and Gray, where on earth would we have been had we not gone up last season? Yeah we'll still need to go up within the 2 years, but I don't think we'll be quite as ****ed this time around if we don't do it immediately

As for Udinese, I'm still none the wiser as to how much money changes hands, and whether it actually counts! Regardless, they certainly aren't in a position to be forking out £20-30m for players just to help us out
  30. Jumbolina

That’s true. But perhaps they can fork out £20m if it is spread over a favourable instalment period.

I don’t think it’s intentional, it’s just down the mismanagement of Watford, but the pendulum has fully swung to the point we’re helping to strengthen Udinese each time we’re relegated, meanwhile we get some crumbs that they don’t need in return.
