Not clear what the purpose is. To save the Bury's of this world or to limit Asian and Far East states and corporates bankrolling the bigger clubs and making the league more competitive. I think the former given the guy on BBC breakfast said "owner investment is a good thing".

I know it's dirty Leeds and all that, but it was a small consolation to see Javi win today, long way to go, but he has a fighting chance of keeping them up

Who do people want to lose more today ?

    Man U or Newcastle ..

United, for all their many faults, are not a sportswashing project for a human rights abusing regime...yet at least!

Can’t stand the whinging Geordies with their murderous owners. Can’t stand United either, because they’re United. So the best result will be a massive sinkhole appearing at Wembley stadium at around 4:30pm today.

Can’t stand either. Will avoid watching and just hope it’s a dreadful match. Will catch the score on the news this evening.

Good to see Stuart Atwell still as incompetent as ever. Giving a red after a long consultation, then being told to review on the monitor and having to overturn his initial decision.

I hate the thought of the hideous Toon ownership being justified in the eyes of their fans by the deliverance of near-instantaneous success.

I want the timeline for the inevitable success money like that brings to be as long, painful and fraught with failure as possible.

Not seen it but they can give a red card then reverse it I think although seems like a mess as usual ?

I still can’t get my head around the fact that Newcastle get a free pass from all football media. I basically don’t follow Prem football outside of what Leicester are doing now for this reason.

Yes it was the correct decision in the end but it took several minutes and how Atwell thought it was a red in the first place is where I question the competence of so many officials. It was right in front of him. No question of him not seeing it. Just a bad judgement call, and as you say, a right mess.

Can we not just blame the players for being pathetic? From what Sky said at half time Atwell and his assistants only caught the incident out of the corner of his eye and it was Tierney on VAR who named Zeiych.

It doesn’t help when readings things like the BBC live text, which has a big audience, and the person writing that clearly has no idea about VAR procedures. Helps to undermine the whole thing.

Players were pathetic, but then they always are. That’s a given.

So, it’s ok to send a player off for something you only see from the corner of your eye? No, of course not. To give a red card you have to be 100% certain, which Atwell clearly wasn’t. This is why I called him incompetent.

His assistant saw it and told him. Referees can and do make decisions based on things their assistants report seeing. This tweet is similar to what Kelly Caites said at HT on Sky and is presumably the Stockley Park explanation:

    Probably won’t matter now.

Potter will probably wish the red card had stuck - would have given him an excuse if Chelsea lose.

Tbh seen a few comments saying it should have been a red but as ever all comes down to subjective opinion .

    Like this from Paul Robinson?

“A great game of football but the protocol was wrong with that decision from Stuart Attwell.

The referee has sent the player off without looking at the screen first.

It has been a great match but it was marred at the end”

Loads of players have had red cards given before being checked by VAR haven’t they ?

  22. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

Yup. The referee must make an on field decision before VAR can get involved. He can’t go and look at the screen to decide what to do. Atwell booked Havertz and Royal before the red for Ziyech but for some reason a lot of people seem to think the Havertz booking was for Ziyech, which adds to their confusion.

In The Times today Trippier is defending the 'dark arts' in which Newcastle now specialise. As a neutral it's good to see, he says.

This neutral hopes they lose. They're the new Bournemouth but with added mysogeny and homophobia.

    Pretty comfortable for Man U.

Newcastle will probably use their billions to get a few attacking reinforcements.
