@Davy Crockett By all means debate and argue your point, but please do not call other people names. If you strongly disagree with another poster's point of view, then voice it using a term that gets your point across with an open-ended question for example.

Portugal does the same thing, I believe. It has caused a significant price hike in property values in and around Lisbon which the locals - particularly young professionals who find themselves priced out of the market - are pretty p1ssed off about

I assume this all ended with @davy telling @sydney_horn he was his best f***ing mate, before attempting to drive home, then - after someone had confiscated his car keys - bursting into tears

Yes, it's bound to distort the local market. Hopefully these countries will stop these visas one day but it is their choice.... nothing the EU can do about individual countries visa requirements.

The EU Commission are investigating Malta I believe though. But they have taken it a bit further. You can, as I understand it, buy EU citizenship, and the passport that comes with it, from Malta for about €1 million.

Bottom line is, the rich can still get to retire to the EU if they want to.

In Portugal you're granted Portuguese citizenship too

Is the overarching point being made that in or out, the poor are stuffed?

If so, they are to some extent, and lots of the arguments around Brexit (freedom of movement, to study, scientific collaboration etc.) don't directly matter to poorer people.

However, and a huge however. Putting up barriers to trade and labour and reducing trust in the stability of the country have and will continue to make the poor poorer. It has and will make everyday goods harder and more expensive to import and buy. It will stop businesses from being as productive and from growing, meaning less money for workers.

Yes, you'll likely still be poor either way. But out of the EU, you'll be even worse off for a significant period of time.

  9. And, to be fair, it is what might euphemistically be described as a 'fixer-upper*'. OTH if you offered the asking price...

The Spanish is a visa but it does specifically say that it allows freedom of movement in the other EU nations.

I think the Maltese scheme is of particular concern to the EU commission as it appears to allow anyone to purchase citizenship regardless of "character" or any criminal record.

Very popular with the Ruskies before the Ukrainian war.

  12. The phrase you are looking for is "* rénover". If it just needs a bit of paint and a new kitchen and bathroom - "* rafra*chir".

But seriously -even so, for the asking price and £40k in refurbs for £75k you've got a nice little 3 bed house with a garden and garage. Sell your 1 bed flat in Watford and you've got £250k left over to enjoy yourself for a year or two or to top up your state pension. The rates equivalent on this would be about £300 a year. Electricity and gas is a lot cheaper. Better weather. This was in reach of a lot more people than Davy 'politics of envy' Crockett would have you believe.

Edit. Stupid forum wont let you use diacritics.

Good news for the French though - no more Rosbifs moving in and bumping the prices up.

A mate of mine is in the process of buying a place almost identical to the one you show in post49 (the farmhouse and barn) and in a similar state of disrepair in Sussex. I've just sent him the link to show him that he could get much the same thing as he's about stump up the best part of 2 million sterling on for 36,000 euro if he'd been prepared to move a couple of hundred miles further south. I haven't had a reply yet!

  14. Try him with this - a bit below his budget, but no work needed and 16 acres.

Could there be any link between the fact that purchase prices are so 'moderate' in countries that still have a large supply of rental accomodation at prices people can actually afford?

Well. At least they got it right about the middle class. One out of two ain't bad.

When I put it to you, during the height of the UK BLM protests, that what was being promoted as a race issue was in fact an issue of class, you had something of an allergic reaction.

For some inconceivable reason you tried to make such a suggestion seem like a racist dismissal of the ongoing race warfare, as per the US born movements canoninical literature. But if you posting this indicates that left wing ideologues are turning back to class based problems, as I have consistently argued, then I welcome it.

Welcome back. Better late than never.
