Who the **** is going to buy Cleverley when he's 33? He's had a decent start to the season, but even so, has picked up knocks. Absolute peak Pozzo this looooool

Would this be a wage reduction? I presume he's already taken a wage reduction after relegation

Perhaps he's one of the 20% who didn't have relegation clauses, and is being a bloody good chap and taking a reduction in exchange for an extra year. Or, it's another body for the Watford Vets team that Gino is building

My initial reaction was a revised contract to reflect his new position of club captain - announcement soon that Deeney is leaving?

Or more likely, the club may just be heading off approaches for his signature. The club/Ivic seeing him as vital, this season in particular.

If we had to pay off Welbeck because he wasn't attracting any interest (despite a release clause of £5.5m), I can't see Deeney, who was on higher wages by all accounts, is less talented and even more injury prone, getting sold or paid off

This is a strange one, can’t really see the logic . Clearly not to protect any investment . Maybe he’s accepting lower wages though in return for a longer contract

Haha the people running this club really are imbeciles and are incapable of learning from their mistakes. Complete morons.

Subservients will claim fantastic business shortly.

Seems a bit pointless - another injury prone over 30 getting a new contract.

And I bet it's that that cheap either given he joined on Premier league terms.

Makes perfect sense to do this providing it’s a wage decrease with extended years.

Hypothetically speaking, let’s say that he’s on £30k a week for the next 2 years.

New deal is £15k a week over 4 years.

Same outlay just spread over a longer period of time. Saving us more wages while we are in the championship.

Goes from £1,560,000 a year to £780,000 a year. Cleverley ends up getting the same amount.

Even if it’s not as drastic as the above hypothetical example, but a drop of £5-10k a week spread over a longer period of time, still helps us financially in the short term.

    LMAO!

    A) Time value of money
    B) He can get a contract of sorts when his 2 year contract expires whether playing or in another avenue (TV etc)
    C) You are expecting him to do 4 years work for the wage he can earn in 2 years under existing contract.

In summary your example is idiotic I’m afraid.

This sort of thing happens in football. Not every negotiation is a pay rise. Length of contract is a guaranteed income.

Yes he could earn the same amount in 2 years. Then when he’s 33 and his contract isn’t renewed, there’s no guarantee that someone is going to sign him. So at 33 he could be forced to retire.

With a guaranteed 4 year salary, takes him to 35. If he has a good couple of seasons with us, when he’s 33, he doesn’t have to worry about whether or not he has to retire, he still has 2 years of guaranteed money, regardless of what he does. If someone decides to buy him from us at 33, we get a fee, plus he gets a bigger contract at his new club. If no-one buys, we have a squad player on a small wage, that we can afford to keep on the books.

So it’s not idiotic at all, its a safe way to help the club and the player.

  16. Jumbolina

No player would accept your terms. It is like playing for two years for free. Your deal does not help him at all. As well as the points above if someone is interested in him at 33 he gets a bigger contract as a free agent rather than having 2 years left with us.

I can see a scenario where he extends for a smaller drop in base, but the example you posted doesn’t work from his perspective.

  17. Markoa$

    Markoa$ Squad Player

You didn’t read my first post fully.

I literally said even a small drop of £5-10k helps financially,

Aka, he makes more money than he currently will over a longer period of time. I thought that was self explanatory, but apparently not.

So yes taking a wage reduction over a longer period does help him.

I think you just misunderstood what I wrote because you got caught up on my hypothetical example and didn’t read the rest of the post.

Glad we’re on the same page now though.

P.s it does help him because, him having a contract for a further 2 years also allows for sponsorships etc, so while he will be making the exact same, he will also get more from sponsorships etc.

  18. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

Well you posted a hypothetical example including figures so I was commenting on the numbers you provided yourself?

As for the smaller reduction which works from his perspective I personally still think it’s bad business for us. He still had 2 years to run and will be 33. I don’t understand the constant club policy to tie players up till 35 even if they secure a small drop
in base. It’s reduces our flexibility significantly. Look where we are with Deeney and what happened with Prodl.

That’s my view in any case.

That’s why I wrote hypothetical so they wouldn’t be taken seriously, just used as an eye opener to those saying it’s awful business, when in fact it isn’t, providing it’s reducing wages.

I don’t think we should extend his contract personally, however, it’s not my money. So if Gino can cut £X amount a week off his salary, but extend his contract so he makes more in the long run, and that allows us to apply that saved yearly wage elsewhere, then so be it.

Yeah it’s annoying having those players stick around like a wet fart, I dont want them here. Janmaat for example has been a waste of space. I would imagine his new deal was a reduced wage over a longer contract so he’s make more in the long term. Whilst hoping someone in holland will be desperate enough to sign him.

I think that’s the game that Gino plays. Reduce wages, longer contract, hope someone offers us something. If not, we’re not paying a crazy weekly fee for a player doing nothing.

I think there are a bunch of reasons we could renegotiate his contract. Duration is only one term and may not even be a part of the negotiations, but in increase in length and reduction in pay is one option. We could also be moving to a more incentive-based contract or a less incentive-based contract, or even be changing the nature of those incentives. We could be acting to remove or add in certain release clauses.

All this “can’t believe we’re extending his contract for four years just like Prodl” stuff seems a bit premature.

Just a shame it sent LouOrns packing so quickly, I was awaiting his response to my question about Obbi Oulare's loan fees!

Think me responding to his comment that Luis Suarez was only league 1 quality with a post from his own blog claiming he was good enough for a top 4 PL club didn't help.

    https://twitter.com/AdamLeventhal/status/1313896402771083265

"Cleverley: talks over extension to deal which runs to 2022 scheduled.

Wilmot: understand club also keen to extend beyond same remaining two year term. "

Would be happy to get Wilmot extended.

Not the finished article, but better to have it done than end up in a situation like Estupinan if he has a good season. Even if he doesn't we would easily sell him for more than we paid for him now so it makes sense.

The less said re Cleverely the better as it has already been explained so eloquently above.

A little bit of detail on the amount per annum a couple of our ex-players & a loanee are earning at Udinese, courtesy of Gazzetta Dello Sport.

    Pussetto is on €0.5m p/a
    Pereyra - €1m p/a
    Deulofeu - €1m p/a

    other ex-Hornets at Udinese include;

    Okaka - €0.8m
    Forestieri - €0.5m
    Zeegelaar - €0.5m
    Prodl - €0.2m

There's no inference Watford are paying anything from the graphic I've posted. Unless it's been posted/reported elsewhere Watford are paying a percentage?

I've no idea. I don't usually pay much attention to wages as most of the time it's inferred or hearsay, but saw this and thought some may find it interesting.

I guess we could be subsidising his Udinese contract or he's on a heavily incentivised one after his injury. I don't know.

Why, if he was looking for a way out. would he accept a wage cut to join the sisters

On no planet i know of is he earning one lira less in total now than his contract prescribed - so if he had a relegation clause then that would have kicked in but there is so little leverage on the Pozzo family side, that it is a safe bet he is getting what his contract says

  32. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

    Hogg-DEENEY!!! Squad Player

Someone on Twitter is suggesting this is after tax, a quick look at Italian tax brackets suggests that, if that's the case, us and Udinese are splitting his wages down the middle. Looks like Pereyra's on roughly £30k a week, which I think was the same as when he was here, wasn't it?

This is why I don't take a keen interest. We don't know for sure if this is his basic income before tax, after tax, with or without bonuses. Is this the most he can earn in a year or the minimum and does it include any split payment from Watford?

Maybe he isn't a mercenary, merely wanting to play top level football and was prepared to take a basic pay cut to do so with possible bonuses & performance payments topping it up to something like he was earning at Watford?

Or you're correct and Watford are still paying around two thirds of his wages. Who knows!?

  34. miserableoldgit

So you think that there is even the slightest chance that he took a pay cut to join Udinese for a year

If you think that then I assume you are part of the Brexit negotiating team

  35. The Recluse

    The Recluse Reservist

I don't know what he's earning in total or how whatever the final figure is, it's arrived at. That's what I'm saying.

My initial post was, as I said to Hogg-DEENEY!!!, more for the benefit of others over any view I have on player wages.
