Hello All, I'm joining a work league for the first time this year, would massively appreciate any pointers/tips for the coming season. Thanks.
I'm no expert but I usually end up in the top 25% of leagues I'm in so may have some useful advice?! Look at the first 7 or 8 fixtures ahead rather than the next couple, especially when picking your initial team. Everton and palace have great starts. Last couple of seasons, clean sheets seem to be dropping so spend less on defenders unless they are going to bring in goals or assists. Keepers of rubbish teams pick up lots of points for saves as they are busier, so while top team keepers may keep a few clean sheets, lower league keepers score regular additional points and save you money for better outfield players. Have as many penalty takers as you can. Milivojevic for palace is dirt cheap and the penalty taker. Save all the chips until the end during double game weeks. Save your first wild card for as long as possible. You get 2 in a season. Save your second for the double game weeks at the end. Try not to cost too many points on additional transfers (4 points per transfer after your free one!). I like to role transfers over where possible - you can carry 1 transfer over up to a max of 1 so you can get 2 free transfers in some gameweeks allowing for better movement of players. I'm not blowing any money on Salah or Kane. To expensive this year and will be detrimental to the rest of my team. I'm spreading the money on a better spread of great other players. That is my risk but one I'm willing to take.
My current team has 3 palace, 3 man city, and a couple of arsenal in the first 11. I think a couple of Everton will make the final cut as they have an amazing run at the start (win win if they crash and burn of course ) The golden boot is talked about being a straight out fight between Aguero and Aubameyang. I have both. Here is a link to all premier league set piece takers: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/premiership-set-piece-takers/ Stick a couple of those in from the mid table teams - Arnie from West ham maybe as a really cheap striker at £7m.
I put in Masina early doors but I'm thinking of binning him now if Holebas is somehow going to keep the LB spot. Otherwise no.
I've put in Hughes and Masina, both good value in my opinion. Not sure whether to put them into my First XI though. Hughes is competing against Cairney and Masina against Schelotto or Zanka (although if he doesn't play he will be subbed so no worries there).
Good starting week for me. Had Wan Bissaka, Richie and Foster. Still got half my team left to play including my captain!
I had an absolute shocker. Bottom of most leagues I'm in. Totally lost my head and used the Wildcard first week. Fingers crossed...
No more comments on this? Surprising! The title race was as close run as the real league, except it had a twist, as 'The also rans' looked for most of the second half of the season to be running away with it, only to be overtaken late on and in the end finishing 2nd and thus living up to their name quite magnificently. Congrats to 'Janmaat 4 ballon dor', whoever they are. Was fairly pleased with my spot, considering I didn't have a great start and missed a few deadlines.
I was close to competing at one point (when I was ~80k OR) but fell back a bit. Still, not a bad season, and I improved my last years OR by about 1million. I think I've learnt enough to compete for the much-desired WFCForums trophy next year.
I am 'The also rans'. My season was a bit like our league campaign...looked great for most of the season only to drop away slightly at the end. Decent season overall though, in both cases. Well done to the winner.
You should've just claimed that based on your name it was your plan to finish second all along. Perhaps next season you can try calling your team 'The winners'?
