I can't believe it. The cities seem to be going for her and the campesinos and indios for the other fella. Where's the vieja's ex-pat vote going?
The far left candidate up against her, Castillo, opposes sex education, legal abortion and same-sex marriage, and has said LGBTQ+ rights are “not a priority”. Bit of a **** show, whoever wins.
My wife couldn't believe the run off was a man with alleged terrorist links against a criminal family. It looks like the Castillo will win, with the remaining votes coming from Peruvian embassies across the globe, my wife only ever voted once at the embassy in London, she didn't bother again once they said that expats were not bound by the compulsory voting laws. She thinks that Castillo will make the country a lot worse having seen good and gradual improvement pre-pandemic in the last decade. The Fujimori is Keiko, the daughter of Alberto who is currently in jail for embezzlement in a public office. For the last 15 years there have been posters of her everywhere as she has been seeking election each time. I suspect that the city people and middle classes would have voted for her in the run off simply because she was the better of two evils.
Yes it certainly does seem a bit devil and deep blue sea. I note Fujimori is already claiming fraud and the election looks like it's going to be very, very close. Just hope for peace there really.
