Judging music taste can be pretentious stuff. I’m always suspicious of those artists who are interviewed, by Jools Holland typically, and when asked what music they grew up to list their parents’ spot on influences, Oh yes my Dad was always playing Sam Cooke, Otis, Miles Davis, whatever. My parents had some awful stuff, deep cuts of the Black and White Minstrels or dreadful maudlin crooners. I’d be hounded out of town.
