Villa are a much bigger club than us, in terms of history, success, turnover, number of fans, along with a multitude of other things. We may have to potential to compete with them next season and perhaps over the coming years, but we'd have to enjoy several years of success in the Premier League to even start considering ourselves close to a club like Villa. A couple of seasons of turmoil doesn't detract from the fact thst they are still a pretty big club. Let's not kid ourselves.
Chaps I know that many of you have your heads screwed on straight, and I also understand that some of the comments here are tongue in cheek. Please though let's never become one of those arrogant sets of fans that we all so despise. We've not even played our first game!
Speaking of big clubs with history and fairly decent sized crowds - how comes Villa don't get the kind of "oh they deserve so much better" treatment like Newcastle do? As for Ighalo - he'll stay (for now)
Bigger club than Villa? Villa are small fry. We're a bigger club than Man City/Utd FFS. We're not little old Watford anymore.
They have no-one connected with them in the media that's pretty big. Newcastle have Shearer, so as long as he stays around Newcastle will always get that treatment. It's the same reason why Leicester were made to be bigger than they are- big ol' flappy ears mentioning them every 5 minutes does the trick for them
Think you might have something there Cude , have to careful though, Agent magoo got turned into a double agent the rotter.
Almen Abdi hasn't even heard of Aston Villa. Even more damning considering he was their original founder.
David Cameron is Villa - I mean West H.. erm Burnley? ..... No it was definitely Villa. They should do well this semester.
Villa are potentially only two seasons away from being a smaller "big" club than Leeds Are we bigger than Leeds? Right now, damn yes.
Hmmmm. More successful and financially bigger, certainly. If Leeds get their act together though, they're a legit second tier big club with Spurs & their ilk. I don't think we'd ever be seeing late 30s/40k at Vic Road on a regular basis in the way Leeds did & Spurs do As for us being in the same ball park as Villa, you'd have to be high.
Totally hypothetical I know, but entirely possible also: if Villa went don next year and we stayed up, the ball park would change again. Stoke and Southampton are bigger clubs than Villa at the moment, but they weren't a few years back. That changeability must be a consideration for any player joining a big club with the potential to drop to the Championship. Villa will always be perceived as a bigger club than us, but the reality is that until they get an indulgent, big spending owner, they are on a par with us as far as potential is concerned. So, in that respect, they are no bigger than us. Reputation? Yes. Influence? Possibly. But actually? No, we are pretty much evens.
Villa are a bigger club than us how is this even in dispute? They are a fallen giant like Leeds and Forest.
Aston Villa will always be a bigger club than Watford. Founding members of the Football League and the Premiership. Won the FA cup 7 times and the Top club in England 7 times. In the top ten of all English clubs and European cup winners. They are bigger than Stoke or Southampton will ever be. It is the biggest club in the West Midlands and in terms of prestige and success is probably only behind Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton. Big clubs are not always the best teams and most competitive in a season. once upon a time Luton were more successful than Villa, and they are a small club. Anyway the discussion started on a rumour that Ighalo was the preferred successor for Benteke. I think this unlikely, because if they really wanted to spend that money on a Watford striker they would go for Deeney. A player in the mould of John Carew and a better player than Ighalo.
How many allotments has Villa Park got surrounding it ? None, thats how many. So not bigger in every aspect are they ?
Unless the world is ending in 2020, then you can't know that for sure. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that in the next 75 years Villa do a Portsmouth whilst Stoke win 8 FA Cups.
I don't really understand this obsession people have about which club is 'bigger'. Surely the real question should be 'which club is healthier'. I wouldn't swap our position for Villa's or Newcastle's, not even if it meant doubling our fanbase.
The size of a club is not set in stone, it can change over time. Blackpool used to be bigger than Chelsea for example. Villa are & have always been a bigger club than us but 10 years from now who know. Never say never.
In my book any team in the PL can be described as big in so far as their purchasing power is concerned. And as soon as you drop out of it you become small again. And in my book Luton are on the icky teeny weeny page.
we might not be big but we are mighty mighty is better than big mighty kicks sand in big's faces and laughs
Does someone have to say this about every transfer we make!? Do I literally have to point out that Britos is a f***ing defender :-/ Guedioura is so mother f***ing good these days we could play him in central defence. I mean Jesus - why did we buy a back up keeper? We could have just put Guedioura in there if Gomes got injured. New manager? What was the f***ing point!? Guedioura could have done that job. On and on and on and on and on.
