That was one of most disgusting moments ever on british television. Two multi-millionaires laughing and joking at the prospect of everyone elses hardship of paying energy bills. Something neither of them will have struggled to do.
I'm not a huge fan, nor have I heard particularly good things, about either of them - particularly Schofield, obviously. Though my Dad did once throw him in a lake at the conclusion of a powerboat race, or so I'm told, so that's something. Either way, I remember watching that live, and to be totally fair, at the time I don't think it really came across that way at all. They weren't in any way laughing at the contestants as I recall - the way I interpreted it, at least, it seemed to some degree the opposite, as though it was clear to everyone that the situation was so bad they needed to highlight it on a platform as big as theirs, and be seen to be acting when the government wouldn't/wouldn't satisfactorily. I may even have tweeted something about the fabled concept of political 'cut-through' as a result. I do think it can be too easy to look back at disgraced/fallen from favour characters and start framing everything they ever did as malicious, when often a lot of it is really just getting swept up in the tide.
Sorry, didn’t answer immediately and got waylaid! Back in the dark ages/the 80s (IIRC) they tried to get a powerboat series going as the hot new sport of the people. My Dad was involved in the marketing, and Phillip Schofield was the presenter, so for a laugh (I presume) at the conclusion of one race a group of them got together, scooped him up and chucked him into the water. My dad is about the last person in the world to do something for ‘banter’ so I’m presuming it was, in reality, motivated largely by the PR potential/for the cameras. That being said, given the insider whispers that have emerged post-downfall about his popularity and reputation amongst industry workers, perhaps they were all just tired of him at that point… (If I remember to check the details of this story at some point and get a more accurate account, I will update)
