I suppose one explanation is that many of us have been continually hung up Hughes and Chalobah’s potential, we’re basing their perceived values on what we think might eventually happen one day, that they’ll eventually turn a corner and become incredible premier league players getting called up regularly for England. Perhaps the rest of the football world just see two players who have gone backwards over four years, been relatively injury prone and have only showed glimpses of any potential quality for fleeting moments. They’re probably viewed as having the potential to go even further backwards, if anything. Hence we could barely give either away, because the potential we think they had was never actually going to materialise. We had fans valuing them at £20m and £50m respectively recently, the rest of the football world clearly don’t agree.
