Who do you think he would replace out of Etebo, Cuchka and Sissoko ? For me hes not as good as any of those.

By the way, he's 27 in 3 months, he initially joined and excited us all when he was 17. His time to go on and be very, very good has certainly passed. He's older than Will Hughes and people are talking about him like there's plenty of time left for growth.

I think you are spot on. If Chalobah was ever going to be the player we all hoped he would be it should have been when he joined us for his second spell. Unfortunate injuries and lack of game time stagnated his development. He doesn’t really seem to put it about the same way on the pitch since the injuries (can’t really blame him) and don’t think he always grafted.

I wish him the best for the future, but I don’t feel all that bad about the club selling him. It seems best for all involved.

Didn't one of the forum sages on here estimate that he would still be a £50m player? Think it was about 6 months ago.

I’m always slightly surprised why players are on social media particularly when there are plenty of numpty people aiming abuse in their direction. If they are thick skinned then fine, otherwise don’t see the rationale

I'm sure Deeney said that on a TV interview once. Said he had amazing natural talent.

    Priceless.

Anonymous people on an internet forum, many of whom have at times been abusive and aggressive to each other, the team and various players spend 10 pages getting upset about a keyboard warrior comment.

    Thanks for the definition Moose.

As a 17 year old he certainly looked like he was going to be a stellar player. However some are late developers and others peak early and then plateau. He was one of those.

It's very frustrating, because maybe he could have been a £50m player if not for that horrendous injury, it's not as if he hasn't shown flashes since! Wasn't he supposed to be back by Christmas when he initially got that injury, and who knows, maybe if he'd been at another club during that time, he'd have got over the injury a lot earlier and he would be a genuine star by now

They definitely did, it wasn’t just Deeney either, it was someone on here. I think they also said if Capoue was English he’d have been worth £50m as well.

Again, I certainly wasn’t annoyed by it, but on a forum when a player has just left in slightly odd circumstances, it’s probably worthy of discussion as part of the overall context of why it happened, is it not?

I mean, can you think of any other player of any club having just won promotion, a league or a cup immediately making reference to ‘keyboard warriors’ by both online and verbal means?

I can’t for the life of me think of one, ever. So I don’t see the harm in discussing it on a forum.

If anyone wants to just read mindless platitudes then you’re welcome to start the Chalobah/Deeney/Hughes fan clubs are you not?

FWI it’s worth I would genuinely class everyone on here as a keyboard warrior, for me the generally accepted term for people who post online abuse just for fun or a reaction are Trolls, or internet trolls. I think that’s now the widely regarded term for it, much, much more so than Keyboard warrior, which basically describes most people who post on forums.

If Chalobah has remotely got his finger on the pulse of popular culture, if he was referring to mindless abuse on Twitter he would’ve used the word Troll.

I think it is a real shame you feel that when someone chooses to stand up to "keyboard warriers", albeit in a relatively mild and brief tweet that he removed, means that he has mentality issues, specifically you think that means he must have a "weak mentality".

And then I find it strange that you now are now saying that he hasn't "remotely got his finger on the pulse of internet culture" because he used the term "keyboard warrier" instead of "troll". Having looked at the various definitions of both, I conclude that they are more or less discussing the same thing, and the fact that you try and make a separate point and criticise Chalobah over his choice of word (in ONE tweet), tells me you have bit of a problem with the bloke.

I like this particular definition in the Urban Dictionary, as he reminds me of one or two posters on here (not you), one of whom manifested himself yesterday with a new thread. :D

There is actually a big campaign on at the moment featuring professional athletes and predominantly featuring PL footballers about online hate. It mentions the word Troll on several occasions. I think it’s widely considered by most people to be the term for people who deliberately post nasty stuff with the intention only of causing hurt or reaction.

There is definitely some crossover, but keyboard warrior is a much older term that now more accurately describes you or I.

I’m genuinely tired of debating it now, but I’m entitled to my opinion on it, as you are to your unwaveringly relentlessly rose tinted one.

Why are you classing my view as "relentlessly rose tinted"? I merely have an opinion that victims of online criticism or abuse have the right to respond without being called "weak".

Personally, I think it is the keyboard warriers and trolls that are the "weak" ones, not the victims.

That isn't "rose-tinted", it is just an illustration of the different values we hold.

Just for s**ts and giggles, here's the Chalobah tweet from April, I managed to capture it at the time. It's in the Premier League 21/22 thread too. Sounds like according to ZZ he has deleted this now?

I mean he was great after Xmas as I have already said on here, but he was turd leading up to the end of 2020.

Totally normal tweet, it’s the sort of thing you see professional athletes write all the time, even more common to delete it straight after. Not even worth debating, especially now the same player has dropped down a league on an inferior contract. Close thread.

Yawn. You don’t even know it’s an inferior contract.

Chalobah has earned nearly £2m a year since he was 19, for playing not a lot of football. And you think you are smarter than him and his agent?

That is a really poor argument Moose, you know that isn’t what I’m even remotely saying.

I’m saying (as you know full well) that the circumstances of his departure aren’t exactly clear cut, and the associated evidence to hand is at the very least worthy of debate.

If you want to join ZZ Top in putting your fingers in your ears while you sing nursery rhymes that is entirely your lookout.

It’s an awful lot better argument than yours, which appears to be,

    The guy is unstable,
Turned down a better contract (supposition) to play at an inferior level, because a few fans got at him online.

The truth I think is more like,
He likes a bit of banter and enjoyed giving it back to those he thought overstepped.

As for his contract. The club offered him a meh deal on similar terms or with risk to him with relegation clauses. He thought he could do better, but like Hughes found this was more difficult than he presumed.

Nevertheless he will have trousered a whopping sign on, and an almost certain increase in weekly wage that will compensate him or he wouldn’t have signed for them. The upsides are that he is now free after 2 or 3 years after having earned in that time what he would have in five and has a new challenge at a richer club.

It’s really not difficult to understand.

So you’ve highlighted what you to believe be supposition on my part and followed it by several paragraphs of your own supposition??

  25. Moose

Yes. Until details of his contract are released that’s all there is. But frankly, your suppositions are wild. You can reiterate them if you feel I haven’t done them justice.

Imagine turning down the opportunity to play alongside the likes of Sarr against teams like Manchester City to play with Bobby Reid against Luton Town.

Just fhukin LOL at having such a lack of ambition and confidence in your own ability.

Though the opportunity to play for the dreamy Marco must have been quite irresistible I suppose.

I see the argument as to whether a footballer has the right to respond to criticism from keyboard warriers/trolls. I think they do, you disagree and think that would make them mentally weak, unless they are Messi etc.. Fair enough, we differ on that.

But why do you think I have fingers in my ears? To me, this is just a question of rights and choices, what is it specifically that you think I am ignoring?

Do we know that he was even offered a new contract?

  29. a19tgg

But I’m not saying he hasn’t got the right to respond? What I’m saying is given the circumstances it’s extremely odd that he did, in the manner and the circumstances he did.

Perhaps it’s just a reflection of our personalities? If I was a professional footballer, then us lot on here and people on Twitter honestly wouldn’t even be the equivalent of a squashed gnat on a car bumper to me. I literally would not give two ***** about criticism from anyone, it wouldn’t be on my radar.

If I’d won promotion, or a league, or a cup then nothing could be further from my mind, a total irrelevance so far removed from my thoughts at that moment, that it couldn’t be any further away if it was in another galaxy.

Perhaps if you were a professional footballer you’d take such criticism far more personally, and hence are naturally empathising with Chalobah?

I suppose it also demonstrates a lack of confidence in WFC. Maybe he thinks Fulham has a better chance of being in the Premiership next season than we do.

Bobby Reid gets paid £2.34m btw. Football is effing insane.

Neither his nor Hughes decision will ever make complete sense. But it is pretty damning if they've had a look at our new signings in training and concluded we are certain to go down!

But you didn't answer my question, what is it you feel I am ignoring with my fingers in my ears, and therefore giving a rose tinted opinion?

It can be milder than that, like people who post stuff purely to get a reaction (also called "fishing"), sometimes while pretending to be someone else. I got called a troll on a YouTube comment section yesterday and I didn't post anything remotely nasty or malicious. Mind you, that was on a medium where people constantly are told to take a "chill pill" or are called "triggered" just for expressing the mildest of disagreements.
