Fair enough. I guess we will never know who he aimed it at. If he was directing it at abuse he's received on twitter then he's 100% justified. If he's aiming at people who were critical of the club and the players for the 18 months up to February 2021 then less so.

Maybe he thought that it would encourage more of the same.

Yes, maybe the lockdown party was part of it, but as you say, it can only be a theory as we haven't seen the abuse.

Seriously, give it a rest. It’s distasteful and you are likening someone you don’t know and who is just posting about football on a forum and social media to a mass murderer who killed, among others, a 3yr old child.

You’re so far beyond the line of bad taste and acceptable behaviour it’s unreal.

For the last time to all forum members. Most of you are civil, funny, entertaining and knowledgeable. You make the forum an interesting place to visit and have a browse. Unfortunately despite numerous repeated notices it seems certain forum members do not get the message about what being on a forum is about and that civility is a vital aspect of being a forumite.

Forums are all about opinions so long as they are reasonable even sometimes outlandish so long as they do not descend into racism, homophobia, sexism and the like. It's not great seeing cliques getting on board to lampoon particular posters and then see the constant spats between pairs of individuals while others are trying to find something interesting or amusing for the few minutes they have to peruse the forum.

Those that overstep the mark in this regard can face bans reluctant though we are as moderators to use that sanction. The abusive nature of a particular post in this thread in relation to a horrific crime committed in Plymouth is well beyond the pale. If the constant *** for tat does not stop then bans will have to be used. It is tiring for the majority to have wade through pages full of unwanted invective from people who should have acquired wisdom, humility and judgement with age. Would you act this way face to face ?

So please, please, please can you some of you take a step back before you decide to commit your thoughts to the forum in future. Thank you.

I don’t get why, if there is nothing wrong with it, you need to deplore it. Can’t you just ignore this one and read another thread?

All the fuss has attracted the attention of the teachers, but there wasn’t much wrong. Just folk chatting.

As we ve seen with our very own forum keyboard warriors , they get very sensitive when anything comes back their way especially if it disagrees with any or all of their viewpoint .

Ive been posting this exact point for over a year now , there are certain posters who spam up the forum by repeatedly stating their viewpoints and harassing anybody who happens to disagree with it .

It’s great to have difference of opinions , but it makes the forum a really laborious read to hear the same few people dominating the conversation . The only answer is to block certain people but I don’t like doing that because its counter to the reason of having a forum in the first place .

There is world of difference between posting "I think Chalobah is finished as it's taken him two years to recover from his injury" and actual abuse. I don't know what kind of responses he receives on Twitter/Instagram but on here he's been judged very generously in terms of ability and his behaviour during lockdown. I presumed his message to the "keyboard warriors" was to those who'd written him (and the wider team) off rather than people targeting him with any kind of personal abuse. The former, whilst perhaps upsetting for him, is entirely valid, the latter obviously isn't.

Ah get over it, do something on the pitch, you moved to Fulham for £3 million who's eating what? Boring.

Messi can tell people to eat their keyboards, as can Ronaldo, Lewandowski, De Bruyne, Mo Salah. Chalobah should get about his work and get about it quietly.

He's a good player, could be a great player but all this oh woe is me attitude professional footballers have is so lame. You're rich AND living a life many dream of, just close your eyes.

You lot have killed it for me. I have read every comment here, and made a couple of contributions, which is rare. But I always liked this player and wanted to see the best of him in yellow. So I was interested in seeing what everyone was saying. He was good for us but not often enough - for one reason or another. I get that. It’s been a frustrating time, for him and for us. And yes, maybe he will frustrate wherever he goes. But reading all this whining about what he said on Twitter, or how toxic he might be behind the scenes blah blah blah is pathetic. And judging a guy’s mental fortitude because he takes notice of criticism is ridiculous. He even deleted the message soon after. I bet Rooney wishes his ranting about England fans into a camera straight after a match could be deleted. But as a player, Rooney was ultimately judged by what he did on the pitch. And judging from what I saw of Chalobah on the pitch, I’d say: good player. Go for it Nate. Stay fit, and you could get into another Premier League side. No doubt about that.

I expect he was talking about Twitter comments made directly to him which tend to be from “thicker” posters who like to look tough to their mates. The comments on here are far more measured and I doubt he would even be aware of what has been posted here.
It’s madness for professional footballers to have Twitter accounts. The abuse from other clubs fans must be terrible, let alone a bit of direct criticism from own club fans.

You know as well as I do, the criticism mostly isn't measured or constructive. it is hyperbolic nonsense.
He hasn't given a "woe is me" attitude. He stated his opinion, and had a bit of a go (after we were promoted), when those keyboard carriers that weren't being supportive of the team. Why does he have to be a Messi before he can do that? You give your football opinions all the time, what is your football qualification/experience? As far as I know, the only connection you've got with football at Vicarage Road is you have worked behind the counter in your family chip shop nearby.

  29. zztop

Absolutely not. And I have not suggested that anywhere.

But much of it goes beyond what is acceptable, in my opinion.

What's more, the criticism, the hyperbolic and more measured is usually coming from people that have no experience, no football talent, and no idea.

But expecting the victim to not respond, as you believe, and even get annoyed when one does (like in #469 and #479 above) is a bit pathetic.

I think the keyboard warriers are perpetrating the modern day equivalent of the playground bullies. Usually with a gang (the equivalent of anonymity today), usually picking on those who can't properly respond, and then bursting into tears if a victim actually does hit back with a smack on the nose.

But, even if Chalobah was only having a go about those just being negative, so what? The team got promoted easily, proving many of them wrong, so why shouldn't he have a go. Or it might even have been a "plea" that footballers find they respond more to positivity, encouragement from their "supporters"when things are not going well, rather than the incessant negativity - something that most sportspeople know is a fact, but seemingly many posters on social media do not.

Again, for the millionth time, I’m not annoyed at his response. Im questioning the mental fortitude of a player who gets that wound up by it.

I can guarantee you that if you looked at Messi’s latest Twitter or Instagram post there will be negative comments on it, do you honestly believe players like that even give it a moments thought? Do you think they store it up in their brain to the point that when they achieve something it’s their first thought?

It’s a sign of a mentally weak player that something so utterly irrelevant occupies their thoughts so much.

  31. zztop

    zztop Eurovision Winner 2015

I didn't say you got annoyed, that was in the other posts I mentioned. But you do think the players should just not respond.

I also wonder why you think that one tweet means that it "occupies his thoughts so much". How do you know? He made one tweet! Unless you have some inside info I think that is a strange thing to say - particularly when you have made many more posts on here criticising him in this thread, arguing your case behind a profile that gives complete anonymity, with someone who is similarly anonymous in a thread that is read by anonymous people. Compare that with Chalobahs situation, a real person with a family, friends and colleagues? In fact, there is no comparison as wasting time in an anonymous world of WFC Forums on petty arguments is probably far more daft than spending time responding to criticisms aimed at real people.

But we now have your reasons for this opinion. You think Chalobah is mentally weak, and presumably should "man up", "get a grip" or something similar. In fact, he should act like Messi (acknowledged as one of the two best players in the world) on his £500,000 a week contract, and not bother what the fans/supporters think.

    Okay, at least that's clear.

  32. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

I think he's saying the opposite. Criticism is fine but so is the player concerned "having a go" back. Which seems fair enough to me ?

  33. Moose

    Moose First Team Captain

It’s not ‘a sign of a mentally weak player’. That’s setting an unrealistic bar of the mental toughness required. It’s more telling that Chalobah has recovered from serious injury and resumed his career, if assessing mental fortitude is your aim.

Chalobah is a player who tends to engage more than some others. That has its upside and a downside for players and fans. But those players who do can add to fans enjoyment and appreciation.

Nothing in what he wrote was particularly harsh, could be taken fairly tongue in cheek and certainly did not exclude reasonable criticism. But you must be aware that some fans delight in the negative and others delight in abuse. I’ve no problem with those getting called out and anyone offended is self-selecting.

There are limited characters on Twitter, I think having just won promotion, if you have to go to the trouble of calling out criticism in your very first tweet, then it’s clearly occupying your thoughts a fair bit.

How would you feel at that point? Personally I’d be overcome with positive emotion, negative posts on the internet wouldn’t be in the same hemisphere as my thoughts.
