Early Cure was Defo Goth too, Friday I'm in love is awful

 

The Cure are an awkward case. They are always labelled as Goth but I don't think it is nearly that straightforward. Three Imaginary Boys and Seventeen Seconds, I would classify as post-punk. Faith (which is a great album) getting more Goth but still sounds more like JD to me. Pornography (also great) is, I guess, Goth, probably one of the original Goth albums.

Then they went poppy, but with Goth tinges which kept much of the existing fanbase, while adding others. Personally, I really love the singles they released in the the 83-90 era, they are incredibly catchy. But they can't be described as Goth - the looks: perhaps, the fanbase: yes, but the music: definitely not.

 

The littlest one has just got his first "axe" (a Fender/Squier Stratocaster? - from the exceptionally helpful people at Herts Music Centre in Snorbens) so the house is filled with the sounds of "The Dead Weather" as he learns this song:

You’re just making a fool of yourself now. I only listen to classical music (and a bit of )azz) now, so presumably I pass your “intellect” test. But I have reached that point following a journey through 30 years of enjoyment of rock/pop - whatever you want to call it. It is possible to value, enjoy, and respect more than one type of music, you know, and one might lead you to another. Failing to acknowledge that possibility makes you seem like an insufferably narrow-minded elitist snob.

 

And how am I meant to respond when people start arguing over two near-identical styles that are both demonstrably sh1t? Give them brownie points for liking 'music'?

Respect is a non-starter, so what am I left with?

Why would you need to see to be able to play the violin? What would you be looking at exactly - where your fingers go?

This is what I hate about this thread - people offering an opinion on a subject they quite clearly have no knowledge of. It would be like me joining in a petrol head's debate- I'd have nothing to offer, except that I think Citroens are great because some of them are blue. So I don't put myself in such an embarrassing position.

Since when is calling time on this ridiculous idea that 'all music is equal' being a troll? Is someone that dares point out that Chippendale furniture is better than IKEA's furniture a snob, highbrow or a troll?

 

No, you would be perfectly correct to say Citroens are great because they offer good value motoring often with a gallic flair. Your petrolhead counterpart would say 'they're **** because they've only got 130 hp, my Aventador has 6 times that and weighs half as much'. To which the correct response would be 'lovely, let's see you try to get your Chippendales back from Bonhams in the back of your Lambo.'

What is good is subjective, particularly when it comes to music. For many, what is good is based on whether it serves its purpose. So for example, Chippendale is only better than IKEA furniture if it satisfies what the owner wants out of it. IKEA for me is better than Chippendale because it successfully houses my vinyl collection. When I buy a car, I'm not a petrol head but I know enough to have a valid opinion on what sort of car satisfies my needs. My first priority is whether I can sit my 6ft 5in frame in a car comfortably. If I can, it is immediately a better car than the latest multi-million pound Lamborghini.

The vast majority of us don't come across quantum physics on a regular basis. This is the sort of topic those who know nothing about would best be advised not to give an opinion on - but the same does not apply to music. Music is universal, virtually everyone listens to some by choice or by chance nearly every day of our lives. Everyone therefore knows enough about music to have a valid opinion on whether it is good. What makes good music is down to the individual. If someone rates the complexity and technical excellence of a piece as to what makes it good, nothing wrong with that. If a teenage girl claims that the latest X-Factor boy band's song is good, their opinion is equally as valid. To claim that people shouldn't offer an opinion on music because they don't have any knowledge about it is condescending.

As for me personally, I don't like X-Factor-type music. I don't get Ed Sheeran and I'm not a fan of Bob Dylan simply because I don't like the nasal whine of his voice. I love punk but I don't like all punk. I don't particularly like metal as a genre but some metal songs are fantastic. I've seen the Manics a few times and have all their albums. I've seen The Cure several times and will be at Hyde Park this summer (I like Friday I'm In Love btw!). I like some classical music but every time I've tried to get into it, it hasn't worked. Saying that, I'm currently exploring Max Richter's back catalogue after enjoying his 2004 Blue Notebooks album.

There is excellent new music around if you look beyond the charts; Warpaint and London Grammar are two recent bands that have blown me away in the last year or so. If you don't like my tastes, fair enough, but you can't tell me they are wrong. What is good in music for most people is what moves them. That's what makes it good for me and I am passionate about music despite the fact I can't sing or play a note.

All music IS equal.

Warpaint are brilliant. Been into Peace too even though at the age of 41 I should be out of my indie disco phase. Mind you From Under Liquid Glass is a cracker of a tune.

Used to love dEUS back in the day. They played a great mix of jazz/rock/funk/folk/soul. Brilliant band live too. Unfortunately for Mollyboo the violinist often looked at his instrument when playing it so they clearly were rubbish.

 

I also used to sing in a band. We were crap and rightfully binned it after 2 years. We knew we were crap. I knew people that paid to watch us knew we were crap. We carried on as playing music was fun. Making it together as friends was even better. I haven't spent the rest of my life judging other singers based on my own talent, or lack of.

 

I was never in a band and we were brilliant.

Unless of course it's that whole argument that's crap, and in fact just like food, drink, clothing, cars, furniture, literature, footballers and anything else you care to mention, some is simply better than others - and if you happen to prefer the crap stuff, it doesn't make the stuff less crap, it simply shows your taste to be wildly inferior - but because you don't know any different you're perfectly happy with your choice.

 

Really? Let me explain again. We knew we were crap but we enjoyed making music together. It didn't matter. We just had fun. You should try it sometime.

 

But what is 'crap' ? I've just been taken to task on variosus posts for daring to suggest that music (as in most things in life) has grades of quality, and been told that there is no good and bad, just opinions - and yet here you are saying you were crap and that (presumably) you weren't as good as the Manics who are 'superb'.
