3 teams do have to go down every season it is kind of the point.

L ewtin made a rod for their own backs when they celebrated too early after Coventry .
Broomfield has to carry the can for that
Brizzle and Coventry have also made the same mistake .
Brizzle are gone and Coventry have a lot to do after losing their home match.

True, but anyone can sleepwalk to relegation, not just the teams who struggled the previous season

It's what makes the league so exciting. We could genuinely challenge for Top 6 or be relegated next season.

I assumed they put Riza on a trial period late in the first half of this season before shortly making him permanent (I thought one of their first games under him, if not their first, was when they beat us 2-1 at their place when we were expecting an easy game - maybe the players did as well!) but I checked and found he was manager since late September. I've just had to check the name of his predecessor again - he was fired following a terrible start, but he seemed to do a decent enough job last season, they panicked and shouldn't have got rid of him that early, if at all.

What’s this crazy talk of a “new striker”? Believe it when I see it etc.

The Athletic did an article recently along the lines of 'who is each Premier League manager's favourite band?' and it was fascinating to see how many gave 'yawnmongers'* as their answer, to the extent of going to watch them live.

I guess in part it's a bit of a wool-lifting of the modern myth that footballer figures these days are renaissance men inextricably tied up in culture, propagated largely by their ever-increasing presence in club and marketing tie-ins for clothing and lifestyle brands.

I guess they'd planned to play MK but realised they needed a smaller "more initmate" ...."stadium/shed" to play in to avoid empty seats given their dwindling popuarity.
I hear Milli Vanilli are due to play there this summer, featuring new tracks "Girl you know it's true, we're gonna be promoted" and "I'm gonna miss ...League one once we win promotion".

"The ode to the town included the lyrics: We didn't win all our matches, we didn't win the cup. But when you get knocked down in Luton, you always get back up."

Should update the second half of the last line to 'you get knocked down another division you tinpot losers, now **** off!'

If ever I’m feeling down, I guarantee the thread title alone cheers me up.

It’s nice to know that with all the chaos in the world, at least one thing is in order. Luton are in their rightful place below us.

It was like a slow painful death watching them slowly climb out of trouble then the
90th minute winner against Coventry and their fist pumping and lap of honour
was almost too much to bare. A week of nervously waiting for the last match, when all they
had to do was to match Hull City's result , saw depression set in and it wasnt looking good as their
fate was in their own hands . Then whammo 1-5 down and Hull either winning or drawing at some
point. It was a great day !!.

The fact that they managed that run to finally get their destiny in their own hands with one game to go, and then blow it, was delicious.

A little over twelve months ago, Luton were in the Premier League and got a last gasp draw against Nottingham Forest- a team that this season has qualified for European Football.

AFC Wimbledon, in the corresponding gameweek for League 2, lost 0-2 at home to Newport County

This upcoming season, they will be in the same division

Funny how life works sometimes isn’t it

I've wondered a couple of times what was going through the Luton players' minds before and during the event when realistically all they needed was a draw on the last day and to shut up shop a bit at a West Brom side who weren't exactly prolific even at home? Were they over-confident, thinking they could play for the win just like that (of course, while it's often not a good idea just to play for a draw, you still have to be sensible when thinking in terms of three points and not be too gung-ho)?

I caught one comment from a WBA fan on Reddit through Google expressing surprise at how poor Luton were given what was at stake and at the same time the fact they only needed a point. They did equalise shortly after going 1-0 down early, but did they just fold under the pressure of the occasion, and was the defensive and mental fragility that has affected so many of their performances on the road a factor, despite recent improvement if only at fellow strugglers?

When someone gets a custard pie in the face or has a funny slip or trip, it’s best just to laugh rather than over analyse it I find.

While I do agree with UEA, I think it’s an interesting point you raise, it’s one thing to be chasing, quite another when you’ve got it all to lose, especially when you’re up against a team who had nothing to play for and probably wanted to express themselves

Yes I think this above is what went wrong, luckily, for them . For a number of months they didn't know what they had to do other than try and win to stay up, to .......now knowing what was enough , a loss might have been enough . Throw the Coventry city over celebrations into the mix and they had a disaster on their hands .
I believe that if they would have been below Hull City on the final day they would have put in a better performance.

Scum are a textbook case of what happens when a bunch of average players overachieve for 1 year, get all billy big ******** and believe they are far better then they are so don't put the effort in, which got them promoted in the first place. Modern footballers and the mini-indstury around each one

I agree with you up to a point.

Could it be that they reached their individual and collective summit and simply ran out of energy?

Hard work and enthusiasm can only get you so far and once losing becomes a habit the belief that had been created will 'softly and suddenly vanish away'.

    Thank goodness!
