What a guy. Absolute class. Spoke for 2 and a half hours. Covered his career and his thoughts on the current situation at the club and absolutely nailed it with the lack of fight in the squad at the moment.
Amersham Town FC. Great night. Luther talked about how he started out, life under GT, going to Milan. His thoughts on racism where inspiring. His thoughts on the players, the board and the mess of the offer of life presidency you could see how much it upsets him. He said things are hoping to be sorted in the next week or two on that. I kind of hoped he meant new owners!
Loved the passion about playing for England too. His favourite memory though. Winning at Old Trafford in the Cup.
Oh bless him! This has made me quite tearful! Memories of that night at OT,my brothers dancing around the seats and my Mum thinking every football match was like this! Looks well doesn't he?
Yes it was a great night. He kept us waiting for a while though, but the pasties were very nice. He did mention a change will be made, especially if the results keep going the way they are, but he hopes it won’t be the manager this time and the honorary life presidency will be resolved in the next week or two.
I can see him hanging in the air, legs crossed, almost balletic, just before heading in from Booth's cross. Red socks that night with black shorts? Always liked that trio of yellow, black and red.
I hope the new owner bit is true, I imagine he and Elton are still close so might have had a tip off if Eltons words from the concert were about him coming back.
I'm glad the night went well and you got to hear his speech. We haven't had a public figure at the club that speaks positive about it since GT. Luther was a bit before my time of fully knowing what football was, but I have seen enough videos of his goals and what he means to the club and it's fanbase to "get him" and why he is held in such regard. Thank you Tony and HB1 for going and let's hope this could be the start of a much needed change if the said rumors (however distant they may be right now) are true.
Just watched the highlights again on YouTube, posted by Stevo, formerly of this parish. What a team of hardworking players that was. Downes, Pollard,Booth,Luther,Twizzle. Unselfish, team ethic. If only... Into my heart an air that kills, From yon far country blows What are those blue remembered hills? What farms, what spires are those? It is the land of lost content. I see it shining plain. The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.
Luther wasn’t our best ever player, but he was the greatest. He holds all the WFC appearance and goal scoring records bar one (FA Cup goals).
those days will never be repeated…the Sky money likes that era off but we have an absolute right to see our players work hard for their salary. Something I haven’t really seen for many years under the Pozzos
It was great nearly 100 people there. Some young fans too. I took my boy who is 11 and he loved hearing about Luthers story. In such a time of doom and gloom Luthers story is a much needed reminder of determination and a strong will to succeed. Get this man on the board.
We are lucky that we still have an ambassador like Luther still around in this day and age. With everything going wrong at the club, it's a ray of light to see Luther dedicating his time to good causes and preserving the legacy of the great GT. Somewhat sickening that some 'fans' cast aspersions towards him for having the temerity of not wanting to be window dressing for the current regime.
My kids met Luther before that Norwich debacle. I explained his record etc and they were in awe. Since then, sadly due to my dad's passing, they've met Luther a few times and he's never disappointed. He's just a wonderful man who has a heart of gold and the girls love him.
Did he mention what his favourite cheese is? I would think it's likely to be a solid vintage cheddar.
9 years ago I experienced the hospitality facilities as a birthday present (more affordable then). I got to meet Luther as he was hosting and I kid you not i had to stop him talking to me because I knew many others were wanting to talk to him. He showed genuine interest in me. Luther really is a top bloke.
