I play it but face away from it with my arms folded and TV mute button on. I record it in case there is a really exciting game to watch like the Soton/Leicester 2-3 game (?) the other week but usually like last w/e I just delete it.
There is no effort involved in recording, the Sky box does that for me and doesn't require me to go into iplayer to find it. There is minimal effort involved in deleting.
I listen to Pards on Sunday night with DJ Majestic. Comes across really well but he frustrates me in that he'll never say a negative word about any managers, like he's in the managers club so won't say they not doing well. Could be bottom of the league on 0 points and he'll back the manager.
As expected . https://x.com/BBCMOTD/status/1879501368362459569 A very good experienced trio of broadcasters.
I think these 2 would do are far better job IMHO. Complete with tactics board, both ready to go when Lineker waves goodbye.
No doubt they will try to add some sort of YouTube /social media angle to show which mlght appeal to younger viewers but not a core audience.
Just done some fact checking and he left the BBC a couple of years ago "by mutual consent". Make Britain Great Again - Bring Back Inverdale! There you go Kemi, you can have that one
Is Lineker in big trouble again ? https://inews.co.uk/news/media/gary-lineker-brink-bbc-exit-zionism-rat-post-3696849?utm_source=x&utm_campaign=social_x_posts&utm_medium=social
Affectively sacked after the Twitter comments. His last MoTD will be this weekend, he was going to present WC2026 for the BBC but that's not going to happen now.
Michael Owen is being lined up to replace him. His monotone boring voice and punditry will be enough to put anyone to sleep at 10.00pm on a Saturday evening. Hopefully he won't present the first one in his boxers to pay homage to Lineker.* This post is a joke btw.
What I don’t understand is why the BBC felt that he generates £1.35m of value with his presentation (significantly more than any other presenter or broadcaster on payroll). They couldn’t find someone with a somewhat similar profile/presentation skills for half or a quarter of that?
No idea. Des Lynam, Alan Hansen and Trevor Brooking were the MotD team I always liked. Straight to the point, excellent analysis and expert critics. Ok Lynam wasn't everyone's cup to tea but I grew up with him presenting Grandstand so his more serious tone didn't bother me one bit. If I could personally choose the next host(s)? Well, I think you know who I would choose.
I’ve always preferred professional presenters rather than ex-sportspeople who have become presenters. It’s true that one or two of the latter have become very good at presenting, but Lineker isn’t one of them in my view.
Lineker was fine as a presenter. A product of the old days, almost an ‘Ant and Dec’ style figure that the viewers grew up watching that tv companies are obsessed with having and always desperate to replicate and create. He was actually a very decent sports presenter, usually leaving the in-game debate to the more recent footballers and giving little in the way of opinion. He was harmless as a presenter, rarely creating any controversy in the football world. I remember hearing an extended family member ranting about him shortly after the first Tweetgate. I asked her, a non-football fan, what her issue was with him as she didn’t watch MOTD. She replied ‘he’s got too much to say for himself’. No prizes for guessing where her particular political leanings are. In a world where people complain about robotic tv ‘stars’ and people without principles, he was neither. But he wasn’t thick enough for those with the loudest echo chamber voices to connect with and thus he ends a long career in faux-disgrace. I’m sure he’ll be back to present coverage for a foreign broadcaster though once all the rage-currency grifters move onto something else. That being said, MOTD has never needed a presenter on that level of money. For the money they pay for the PL rights, they just need extended highlights and a few words after about any major decisions during the games. Much like Sky used to do with Football First and Goals On Sunday. For highlights programmes, the minutes shown are the selling point, not the friendly bantz between the hosts. One day the Beeb might get it, but it’ll when they’re fighting for subscribers along with the rest.
Apparently they are limited in how much they can show but yes people don’t need loads of chat . Particularly as you can get it elsewhere now and most of that “analysis” is pretty repetitive .
IMV the presenter should be not be a former pro footballer as it can come across as "we know more about it than you do " with the fellow pundits . I think Gary Linekar was made to feel that his views and opinions were very important , not that I would take that much notice on what he had to say, and it seems like the knives were already out and waiting to pounce .
Yes all the presenting and punditry is just to pad the highlights to make the programme more substantial. I used to record and the fwd through the drivel, but given the games are generally now so predictable I don’t even do that. Not watched it once this season. I agree Lineker did what he did pretty well, much as I disliked him due to the stories about him I heard on here (leaving wife for younger woman, generally being unpleasant etc?) and also because Mrs TuT likes him …..
Me either, but largely because Sky Sports put 3 min highlight videos out for free on YouTube within an hour of every PL game finishing. So if I see a score or hear a game was particularly interesting I just look those up.
