Or we deem him important enough for the season ahead that we take the hit on a small fee (in the conditions you outline above) and keep him here and let him go in a year for free. But we know all about what happens if you keep players who may want to leave...

That said - I bet Chalobah would have wanted to join Leicester in January all things being equal. He certainly didn't react badly over the next few months.

However, given Louza has said it was chats with Xisco that convinced him to join, maybe there are subtle changes to our approach happening. Xisco obviously rates Chalobah highly enough to make him captain...so maybe if he tells Gino he wants him next season....

Also means no playing time for Chalobah! May as well have stayed at Chelsea if his thought process is to sit on the bench every week.

Can't see Chalobah going anywhere to play second fiddle. He will only leave us to play first team football somewhere else. Weren't Newcastle interested at one point or did I make that up?

If he does want to leave, we could do worse than shifting him for that amount and bringing in another exciting young prospect for a similar amount. Those teams (or at least some of them - Palace and Southampton are both in a spot of bother at the moment) are obviously higher up the food chain than us, but Chalobah has a good deal of credit in the bank here, and I am not sure he's shown the quality lately to go to another PL club and displace someone else in the first team. Newcastle as someone else mentioned are pretty poor in CM, but that would be a big lifestyle change to leave family and life in London to join a different relegation threatened side.

He may be happy to rotate now he's more mature and knows he picks up injuries. Plus some clubs who may be interested will have European football so there will be rotation. Also, adding 50% to his current wage probably softens the blow.

I doubt many players demand to be first choice in transfer talks - they will just have the confidence in themselves to make that happen. If Chalobah is confident enough, I doubt he would back out of a move just due to their being 'names' already at that club.

I would hope we are doing all we can to persuade him to stay mind you - its taken years for new leaders to emerge in this squad, I would be very keen to retain perhaps the best of the lot and do whatever convincing we have to.

I like Chalobah and would like it is he renews but personally think he is pretty replaceable.

Was only 6 months ago fans were screaming for his head and abusing him online for poor performances.

Hughes and Sarr would be pretty devastating.

Chalobah has a very high ceiling clearly, but hasn't looked that close to reaching it for a while. But if there is even a 1/3 chance of him breaking out and becoming a 30m+ player (and a 2/3 chance of him remaining a 5-10m player) then we should push the boat out to keep him.

I think we bought him for £5m from Chelsea, I know he’s had injuries, but I think there is virtually no chance at this stage in his career he has a breakout and becomes worth £30m. Despite his injuries I think it would’ve happened long before now. I don’t think we should be getting too carried away by half a good championship season.

  9. Yes, that's the £5m in my example....

Yep. He was underwhelming in the Premier League for at least two seasons and not very good in the Championship for half of this season. In fact, the whole body of evidence of him being good enough for the Premier League is about four/five games at the start of the season under Silva before he got injured.

He played really well towards the end of the season and maybe he can finally make the step up but it's certainly not guaranteed.

Significantly hampered by injuries and Capoue/Doucoure though. Had he not picked up that injury, I’m sure he wouldn’t have dropped off to the level he was at at the start of this season. This season was basically the first season where he was a regular when you think about it!

I recall a number of the players, most memorably Deeney, describing Chalobah as the player in the squad with the highest ceiling and as a potential ‘£50m player.’ A young PL player particularly an English one need only be good for 18 months or so before commanding £30m.

I think Chalobah has looked better than Hughes for the last couple of months. Prior to his injury for the last couple of games Chalobah really seemed to have turned a corner in his energy levels and overall impact on games.

A big concern is still his general ability to avoid injury, but if he leaves now I wouldn't be surprised if he does a Welbeck and looks a decent PL player next season.

Chalobah has shown recently that he still has another level he can get to, while I don't see Hughes as being any different from when he was pretty ineffective in the Prem our last season there.

I'm not sure why you brought Sarr in to the discussion though, he is head and shoulders above them both (as was Capoue, who at his best was the type of player whose presence we still in the current squad).

Deeney literally talks absolute Shyte for a job. I can judge Chalobah based on what I’ve seen with my own eyes over his entire career. He’s looked good for half a championship season and a few games of a Premier League one. It would take a miracle from here for him to ever be worth £30m, let alone £50m, despite what Mr Rentagob says. He’s also 26 so not a young player anymore.

I didnt bring him in. I was responding to another user.

I think Hughes has spent his Watford career being shunted around into positions that dont suit him. Whenever he has been in his natural position he looks a solid PL midfielder to me.

It's hardly inconceivable that Chalobah's best years are ahead of him. Same for Hughes. Look at Capoue for example. How old was he when we signed him? Prior to that he didn't look half the player he would become.

£30m to £50m best years ahead of him though?

Capoue was about Chalobahs age when we signed him, he never really improved he just left a top 6 team where he couldn’t cut it and found his level at a mid to lower Premier League team. Either way are you saying he was ever worth close to £30-£50m with us? We just sold him for about £2m.

If Capoue was English he would have been worth 25-30 million, yeah. He's too old now.

We bought him for £8m, not a single club in five years bid for him and we sold him for £2m. I find it hard to believe he was ever worth £25-30m during that time regardless of nationality.

I find it very hard to believe that Chalobah will ever be worth £30m. I’d give at least a 1 in 10 shot vs the 1 in 3 the poster I was originally replying to suggested.

It’s quite scary how carried away some people are getting with players having had a good season in the championship, but I guess it’s just the reverse reaction to when we got relegated when the whole squad wasn’t even championship standard and players like Kiko etc were awful.

How do you know that nobody bid for Capoue? I think he performed far more consistently than Doucoure did and we'd definitely have got £30 for him a couple of years ago. I agree that it is unlikely Chalobah will reach those heights, but it's clearly not impossible. If he stays injury free, starts regularly for us and we stay up, Chalobah's value will be easily £15 million.

My main concern is his ability to keep fit and play with confidence.

£15m I agree with, but £30m no way. He’s not exactly old but at 26 he’s virtually done nothing in his career other than look promising for relatively infrequent spells, the most recent of which was half a season in the second tier. Yes he had a serious injury, but I’d imagine the fact that it took about two years to recover from it wouldn’t be lost on any buying club.

I like Nate and I hope he stays, but the notion that at age 26/27 with a complete none event of a career behind him, he’s then going to suddenly have a breakout season next year in a team that will very likely be struggling in the lower half, and suddenly be worth £30m is just pure fantasy.

I'm actually not basing the idea that there is a small, but not insignificant chance, that Chalobah could realise his potential and suddenly become valuable on Chalobah's performances over the last few months in the Championship. I'm basing it more on some of the fleeting runs of form we've seen from him between injuries in the PL. Chalobah is also very highly thought of in the England set-up and in a position of relative weakness for the national squad too, so a good run of form could see him break into the side, which also provides scope for a steep increase in his valuation. James Ward-Prowse (of course quite a different player) has been good consistently for what, 18 months, how much do you reckon it would take Southampton to part ways with him? Chalobah (who is a month younger than JWP) could plausibly have a similar run of form (without the set pieces).

We almost Doucoure for 40-50m to Everton in 2019 (age 26, I believe) on the back of about 18 months of good form and sold him for 25m having been relegated aged 27 a year later (after a not particularly impressive season).

You can quibble with the numbers and likelihood etc, my main point is that Chalobah is a little odd in that his value resides in his capacity to realise his potential consistently in the future rather than his current importance to the side.

As others have said, 12-18 months of good form changes everything. That said, I'm glad we've strengthened in CM, as our current options do not pose enough attacking threat.

Well JWP has some significant extra intrinsic value in that he’s worth several goals a season from free kicks. He’s also performed consistently well for Southampton over the course of a number of season in the Premier League. A friend also sent me his stats in comparison to all the other midfielders picked for England and he’s actually head and shoulders above all of them.

Chalobah has never done that, not even close. Could he do it? Possibly. Personally based on his career to date I think it’s extremely unlikely.

You can say that about any of our players though, it doesn’t make it anymore likely to happen.

You can, but I think it's fair to recognize that given various aspects of Chalobah's career, perceived pedigree and skillset (the Chelsea pedigree, extensive experience in the England setup, and his style as a complete midfielder), that there's more scope for that run of form to generate a rise in valuation than for many of other players. Which I think is part of what Deeney and others were highlighting when they said that Chalobah was the likeliest in the squad to go on to become a 50m player.

With JWP, yes his set pieces offer intrinsic value, something I alluded to during the comparison. But I don't think he has performed anywhere close to the level he's shown in his all round game this season. Southampton actually almost sold him to us for 10m in 2018, after several seasons in which he hadn't really pushed on.

This is what I was talking about my mate sending me earlier. Regardless of his performances a few years ago, he’s now currently performing at a higher level (at the same age as Chalobah) than the entire England midfield. It would be some turnaround for Chalobah to suddenly do the same thing. He hasn’t done anything in his career yet other than look food in fleeting spells. JWP is categorically performing well and posting great stats.

It's more realistic for NC or WH than TC, DG, TD, BF, KF, CK due to age. It is more likely than AM, W T-E, DB, KS due to nationality. It is more likely than TD and AG due to ability.

So you couldn't say that about any of our players. Sarr, Pedro, Dele-Bashiru, Quina, Hughes and Chalobah are the only ones who could feasibly go for big money imo. Possibly Sierralta too.

We're going to have to be better than the sum of our parts to have a chance of staying up next season.

I reckon he'd still go. Better wages, playing in an excellent team, playing for someone who probably knows him well and the potential to play in Europe.

Sounds like we are all sorted financially.

If A-Fletch gets 3 goals we can sell him for £5m, and if Chalobah has a decent season we get another £50m. Reckon we can get £10m for Gosling as well?
