So he's got worse but the clean sheet percentage may indicate a better defence as well! Save percentage is pretty similar but not sure how that comes up against other keepers

Fair enough, your opinion. I do find it astonishing that you can’t think of a championship keeper you would swap for Bachmann though,

I honestly want nothing to do with the moron but he pesters me repeatedly. I don't do anything to encourage it from them either. I've never blocked anyone on this forum and it's pretty much only pride at that fact which mean I've not done it already.

I think we are close to being ok. We look appalling on occasions but also look quite good sometimes. I don't think you'll find many games where we don't have some sort of blip, and I don't think you'll see many games where we don't offer anything. Yes I saw Saturday this happened.

Bayo and Bachmann are not great, but they're the best options we have which I feel is a reflection of our squad at the moment.

TC is inexperienced and a sane man would tell you were doing nothing this year. If we had a 3 year plan we're clearly 3 months into that plan - although we're not on any plan, we're just bludgeoning through until Chak is sold, we get another dud Mogi bargain bin and we can give Ince a new 5 year deal

I think he’s just about serviceable at this level if we intend on standing still in mid-table. Money better spent in other areas.

But, as TC seems to believe we can, we are hoping to compete up and around the playoff spots, he’s not consistently good enough. And neither are the defenders (as a unit) in front of him.

As fans, we want it all - and delivered ‘yesterday’ too. But the reality is we didn’t have the funds in the summer…and still don’t to get top players in every position.

It doesn’t take a high IQ to realise this squad is a GK, defensive midfielder and goal-scorer light. If/when funds come in to spend, the club will have to decide which of the above is most important.

The concern is that TC has nailed his colours to the mast with both Bachmann and Jebbison, so will be some climb down.

To add to this - it’s an interesting debate what would be most important.

Not many sides go up without a good GK - but it does happen.
Very few go up without a strong defensive midfielder.
A fair few teams have gone up without a striker in amongst the top scorers though - despite them being seen as key, and they are obviously something that fills stadiums and gets fans endorphins going.

    Which Bachmann error was worse?

I am going for the first, but it is compounded by the second for the result.

This is how low we've sunk.

A winger up front looks like a top centre forward compared to the abysmal options of a money laundering Trojan horse and the second coming of Jerome Sinclair.

Similarly, Bachmann gets praise for stopping shots quite well, while he can barely kick it or catch the ball.

Someone does need to remind Bunsy that we got promoted with the best defensive record in the league with Bachmann making 23 starts...

It was a maybe more confident Bachmann then, but often theoretically goalkeepers get less shaky in their early 30s, plus until these last couple of games where the injury was perhaps affecting him he had started this season well.

    There's no triangle.

But probably Burnsy is happier having blocked me because he didn't like his fragile ego getting dented by my correcting his many silly statements like above.
    His ignorance is his bliss.

WillisWasTheWorst Its making less grammar mistake's thats important

I would argue that THE most important position in a successful Championship team is centre forward. That doesn’t mean he has to be the top scorer (although he needs to get his share of goals). But he absolutely needs to be able to receive the ball at any height, be strong enough to hold onto it and be able to pass it accurately to a teammate. Those attributes make all the difference to a team’s cohesive attacking. Needless to say we don’t have it.

I know Bachmann is public enemy no1 right now, but most can accept he’s probably, overall, worth another chance once his head is in the right place. But Bayo? No way. Baah up front is infinitely better than VB. Doumbia might well be better than Bayo. Young Jebbison too. I can no longer accept that Bayo is ‘the best option we have’. I just hope TC has also come to that conclusion.

Baah and Rajovic in a make-shift front two would of been interesting. One has pace and one can finish (most of the time) in the box. He's got the most composure on tracking the flight of a ball and that is one thing we surely are missing. Right now though, I think we're putting a lot of pressure on Baah to play as a striker, so yes I agree maybe it's time to get Doumbia involved more if Jebbison is frozen out for now. Even Vata could play the Asprilla sort of roll behind.

Yep, a fact the owners got straight away. Score goals in this league, you’ll likely be near the top. Makes me laugh that we had Deeney, Vydra, Ighalo and Forestieri in our promotion year and they scored 62 goals between them.

Only the ones I've seen, I'm sure there are better keepers than Bachmann but the standard I feel is quite low. A lot of mistakes being made by multiple keepers. The one by the Leeds keeper a couple of weeks ago was probably the worst of the lot

  22. Knight GT

That's what I've said about Bachmann in the past, he's a mid table keeper which is about where we are as a club as well. I like the fact Tom wants to aim high and I guess if you around mid table a lot of the time you're not far away from that. I don't believe he should have said what he did about picking Bachmann though. God knows what he saw in Jebbison!
I think we need a striker more than we need a keeper in fact of the three positions you mention I would say the keeper is less urgent

It’s often said it’s not as important anymore, but out of interest I just looked at the last few seasons and who got promoted. Top scorer position in brackets:

    23/24

    Leicester (5th)
    Ipswich (12th)
    Southampton (2nd)

    Top scorer Blackburn (19th)

    22/23

    Burnley (5th)
    Sheff Utd (8th)
    Luton (3rd)

    Top Scorer Boro (4th)

    21/22

    Fulham (1)
    Bournemouth (2)
    Forest (8)

    Top Scorer Fulham (1)

    20/21

    Norwich (3)
    Watford (11)
    Brentford (1)

    Top scorer Brentford (1)

    19/20

    Leeds (9)
    West Brom (35)
    Fulham (1)

    Top scorer Fulham (1)

So a bit of a mixed bag, it’s not essential to have a great striker, but equally bar 19/20, at least 2 out of 3 promoted clubs had a top scorer in the top 5, and in only one season was the top scorer not from a club in the top 6, so despite it not (always) being essential there is a pretty strong correlation between having a top striker and getting promoted.

Every Championship club 'needs a striker', but such strikers don't really exist.

We had a run of several years where we were absolutely spoiled with 15/20 goal strikers (King, Henderson, Graham, Vydra, Deeney (x3), Ighalo) which probably makes it all the more noticeable now we have returned to reality.

I mean they definitely do exist, last season the top scorer had 27 goals, 10 players scored more than 15. The season before the top scorer had 28 goals, 7 players scored more than 15. The season before the top scorer has 43 goals, 5 players scored more than 20. The season before the top scorer had 31 goals, 5 players scored more than 20.

You get the picture, these strikers very definitely do still exist, we’re just comically bad at identifying them.

We regularly identified them season in season out pre-Pozzo, it was just a bit of a red herring that Pozzo had Vydra and Igahlo near the start, our failure to identify any good ones since then isn’t evidence they no longer exist, it’s evidence Pozzo got lucky initially but is actually utterly atrocious at scouting them.

Strikers didn’t just stop being a thing after Vydra and Igahlo, the answer is a lot closer to home.

I should have said 'they don't exist in the pool of players we will sign from', which is essentially your point.

    Got you, apologies.

I think it’s possible to sign a decent striker as plenty of other championship clubs do it, I mean Szomdics was £3m from Peterborough, we’re just too busy being distracted paying £5m for ones like Bayo, because apparently that’s better for the club in other ways.

The Bayo deal was certainly better for the pesky Bayat Bros bank balance. If only I can flip properties like they can footballers, oh well.

Also agree with you about buying in and developing players from the English league. It worked with Deeney.

It's a false saying tho ....46 clean sheets only guarantees 46 points but a goal every game can turn those 46 points into 138 points . On the flip side , Bachmann has a couple of mares and he costs the team the match but if the striker is kicking the ball over\wide every match then it is a collective disaster.

Sammie Szmodics really did have a season out of the blue last season with his goals and in a team that almost got relegated.

I think Morgan Whittaker was another ?

Don’t think you would have been clapping them off because

1- you would have still been keyboard smashing on shoutbox rather than actually attending the game .
2- Despite a promotion winning season you would have been dumping your negativity in the forum because that’s all I’ve ever seen you do .

Dunno why you get so defensive when people point out how miserable and negative your outlook is ? Sometimes it’s funny and gets you click baits from your little friends but mainly it’s just interminably dull and predictable .
