The language used was my only point. As I said, the rest of the post contains lots of decent, reasonable opinions.

That's fair enough. It's a tough one, Kiko and Ngakia are both such different players with different skill sets, it's tough to know who's the better option. Against quality attackers when we're going to be pinned in for long periods, I'd lean towards Ngakia.

The good news is that he will be fab again next season in the champ so is worth hanging onto.

Proving again he's capable at this level, well played Kiko

Excellent today, what a performance. Still got injured but stuck it out for the 90.

Without a doubt in the prime of his career. Absolutely key to keep him fit as Ngakia is nowhere near his level at the moment

    I would say MOTM.

Didn't put a foot wrong and his combinations with Sarr and Cleverley made it look like we were the CL chasing side.

A seriously good performance from everyone. I cant believe what we say today.

I absolutely despise this little ****.

Capable of the odd impressive performance and did pretty well in a strong team in a **** league against a bunch of woeful cloggers, but the most perfect example of what a weak, pathetic, spineless, heartless group of mercenaries we have at this club. Here for absolutely nothing more than a pay cheque.

He's mostly been utter, utter dog **** in this league, and every single time the chips are down and he's putting in yet another 3/10 performance this soppy little rat completely bottles it and feigns injury. I honestly despise him, and I've been steadfast in that for about 5 years. He's everything that is wrong with this club.

He’s pathetically weak. The way he was brushed off the ball for West Ham’s second yesterday exemplified why he should be nowhere near starting at this level.

If any media outlet or broadcaster wanted to analyse and understand the difference between the championship and the PL, simply comparing one of his games from each league would sum it up perfectly.

  18. RS2

In the Championship he could get forward when he liked as much as he liked. In the Premier League he actually has to do some defending and apart from some decent covering vs Man Utd he's been woeful, as he was two seasons ago. The guy has the defensive awareness of a dead badger.

Once again, I forget what thread it was on, but the discussion was had just a few weeks ago by some on here who think he is a PL-standard player. It’s just delusional really. File under:
    • Hughes was rubbish.
    • Kucka and Tufan are miles better than Hughes and Chalobah.
    • Cathcart has never let us down and is good when WTE isn’t there.
    • Ben Foster doesn’t make mistakes.
    • Louza wasn’t a waste of vital funds.
    • Sarr is a Top 4 player.

As much as Femenia is not a Premier League he really has not been that bad this season apart from yesterday and I will never understand how people can hate our players, despise them. Very strange

Not wishing to derail the thread as it’s about Kiko, but this is the problem with this place sometimes in that it’s always far too binary. I think the Hughes/Chalobah argument is far more nuanced than that, but as ever it’s always dragged down to what we had vs what we’ve got, rather than what we had vs what we should have instead. We had it constantly with Gray/Vydra, and Fessi and Abdi and whichever rubbish PL alternative we had.

We got relegated and lost Doucoure, Capoue and Peyrera from midfield. Are people genuinely saying that swapping Doucoure and Capoue for Sissoko and simply keeping Hughes and Chalobah would be making a significant difference right now? Is that midfield genuinely weaker or stronger than the one that got relegated? I fully get the argument that Hughes is better than Kucka or Tufan, but given who we lost from our midfield when we got relegated and where we are now, is he genuinely enough on his own? Or is the answer as always, it’s neither what we had nor what we’ve got.

Also I know you’ve said a few times Hughes wouldn’t sign because of Munoz being in charge, now I wanted Munoz gone and thought it was the wrong decision to keep him on, but Gino clearly didn’t, so are you suggesting Gino should’ve sacked a manager to keep a player happy? Surely with us having had player power issues in the past, that would’ve been a horrifically dangerous precedent? And it’s not like he’s even a club legend like Deeney that might warrant even entertaining the notion, he’s just an average player in historical terms.

I get get the hand wringing if we actively wanted rid of him and wouldn’t even offer him a new deal, but that wasn’t the case was it? I see a lot of moaning about it but I don’t hear any real world solutions about how we could’ve kept him, aside from inventing a time machine so that Gino could see Munoz was a disaster.

I have never suggested they should have sacked Xisco to keep Hughes happy. Merely stating that it’s a fact that Hughes had major reservations over Xisco (as did other players) and that was a key factor in him not staying - and not things like ‘relegation clauses’ or his agent angling to get him out.

(They should have sacked Xisco because he was crap)

He has been awful. The fact that those around him have been worse doesn’t elevate his performances to anything like decent.

And that’s fair enough, I just don’t see if that’s true how we could’ve kept him unless Gino went against his own decision and took player sentiment on board. We all know Munoz should’ve been given the boot, but bear in mind we all to a man thought it was a crackpot decision in the first place, aside from Gino who either lucked out massively on a random punt, or saw something in him nobody else did. That would surely influence his decision to retain him. I’d certainly rather have Hughes over both Kucka and Tufan right now, but having lost Doucoure and Capoue I’m not convinced our points total would be drastically different, given our monumental problems across the entire back 5.

That wouldn't have solved all our problems, of course, indeed, but having a more balanced and functional midfield, with another player who is actually capable of retaining possession and showing for the ball in the slightest, is pretty much guaranteed to have improved both our defence and our overall performances to at least some degree.

Again, not magically by any means, but the defence might look/function even 5% less appallingly, or even just have to function 5% less of the time, if the midfield did their job better - something that it seems fairly clear now that Hughes would have had at least some impact on (regardless of whether, in the real world, there was a chance of him being here or not).

Best one was the notion that dumping Doucoure and Capoue was irrelevant because Quina, Chabs and TDB were going to steamroller all over the championship like a finely tuned Rolls Royce.

I think he’s been the least culpable of our defence so far. What winds me up about him is what a coward he is. Several times over the years he has pretty much subbed himself when he didn’t fancy it.

Masina is brainless but you feel like he’s at least up for the fight until his thought processes leave him in a pickle.

Was the main argument not that losing AD and EC wasn't a disaster as our other midfield options were good enough to succeed in the Championship? Which was proven to be true?

Yeah, Kiko has been largely fine, in a very poor defence. Completely agree he has his deficiencies though, several of which were exposed yesterday. The way he was shrugged off the ball for the goal yesterday was infuriating.

I remember it more as smug self delusion (not by you) that Chabs and Quina were miles above championship level. The same people who claimed Tufan and Kucka were miles ahead of Hughes in terms of ability. It’s a weird comfort thing about players being rubbish as soon as they are sold despite having put in years of service. A symptom of not allowing any criticism of our ownership.
