If Gibbs does come here I'm not sure he'd represent good value for his wages because he seems so injury prone.
This would also mean Holebas would remain first choice at LB, Gibbs eating up a fair chunk of the wage budget while he's getting treatment and we'd still need someone else to play there when the former is suspended.

Possibly the most well thought out post of the summer , I'm afraid it's true when you think of some of the players bought for millions in the last two seasons and the return (nil) i.e. oulare, Suarez, at least with Gibbs you know what you are getting and it's not such a gamble!

Definitely not what I said. He'd certainly contribute so enough with the sarcy tone o_O

I blame Pererya for Watford fans' unrealistic expectations on transfers. Also, the Pozzo's have, rightfully, led us to believe that they will get top quality players players for pennies. Which just won't be the case in every deal. The Pererya deal was a phenomenon, I wouldn't expect to get a player like that again any time soon.

Yes, we are becoming a more attractive club to join. But we don't win trophies, we don't play in Europe, we're not a safe PL team, we don't pay high wages. Which makes you wonder, why do we think we can attract the mightiest players? Think of the most perfect player you want us to sign. Would they sign for West Brom, Bournemouth, Palace, Burnley, Stoke, Swansea? If the answer is no, why on earth would they want to sign for Watford???

Would be good backup for Holebas. Hopefully Gibbs will only play the games that he's suspended for so won't adversely effect our season.

Let's be honest here. We are building a team that can be a sustainable Premier League outfit for years to come. That is the aim.

Bringing in players like Kieran Gibbs can only forward this ambition. If we bring him in now, we have a first choice left back for the next five years. It's a worry that we would no longer have to deal with every summer.
He is a good player, and what we need are good players. If we can get him it seems a no brainer!

    Good point, well made Sir.

If you look at some of the crazy money being asked for players at the moment this doesn't seem too bad, Man City and Chelsea have been spending mega bucks on full backs and I'll wager they are not playing for £60k a week. I know they are different positions but Liverpool are getting nowhere at £66m for a 22yr old from Leipzig, Spurs wouldn't take £55m for Dier, Chelsea want £50m for Matic, I mean, really!

Biggest problem Gibbs has had for the past couple of years is Bellerin, the reason he is not getting a game is not because he is no good but that they have someone better, what were Barca looking at for him £40m? You don't play 230 games for Arsenal if you are rubbish.

Also I think low risk, if he is not great then probably still worth £8m in a couple of years, if he flies we double our money, if he's good and has no value if 5 years then so what, he's obviously done the job and we're still happy.

Bellerin plays on the other side. It's Monreal keeping him out.
He's never looked that great when I've seen him but if the consensus is he's great then sign him up.

Yeah but it sounds better being kept out of the side by Bellerin than Nacho.

It's probably what he tells his mates.

Arsenal fans seem mixed. But most want him gone and believe the 10m mark is good business. It's a position that we desperately need to fill. A potential England left back for that kind of money cam only be a good thing.
Personally not seen enough of him to make a judgement on him. But a good age loads of experience and doesn't need to uproot his family. Can see this happening

He'd be a good signing and definitely a step up from Holebas. I like Holebas, he's great going forward but his discipline both in terms of cards and positioning is useless. Never have I seen a full back be so content with allowing an opposition player to get a cross in. He wouldn't even try.

Gary Neville said it best last season, as a full back, your main job is to prevent crosses coming into the box. If you let a cross into the box, it must be counted as a failure.

I'm not saying Gibbs wouldn't be an improvement on Holebas, but... Holebas played regularly for a Roma team who finished runners up in Serie A. He's played in the Champions League regularly, won a lot of silverware and was a regular international for 5 years. Holebas is a quality player and I think if not for his discipline would have found a home at a higher level than us.

I agree for me the only problem with Holebas is that he is getting on abit, so if the club think gibbs will be a long term replacement then they should just pay the fee.

Was. That's my only concern with what you've said. There's no denying his pedigree and what he's achieved, but despite starting his professional career late, he's old and the burdens of being old are catching up with him. It's not just that his discipline is poor, he normally gets beat in a foot race and he's also usually found way too far up the pitch. It's unfortunate and whilst I'm not sure whether Gibbs is better/worse/as good as Holebas, Gibbs would cover more ground, is faster and would be more disciplined.

Cos Watford is a 'London' club with all the bright lights and attractions.
Who wants to live in Burnley or Stoke?
They speak funny in Swansea, Bournemouth is full of people in God's waiting room and a Palace is not how I would describe that area in sarf London.

AND we have Chorleywood common, the Chiltern Hills and the Harry Potter experience, and we are a short drive from Heathrow and the underground and national rail and motorway networks to get the hell out of there at a moment's notice.
    It's almost utopia.
    WTF more do they want?
Just tell the new players not to go INTO Watford

Don't know if this is significant or not because I've never placed a bet in my life. Yesterday we were 2/5 favs now we are 4/9 favs. Does that mean more money has been put on him joining us over the last 12 hours or so? Or does it mean that things have cooled down a bit?

  22. Yeah, but like. MacDonalds, Ponderosa or Four Seasons (at 2 in the morning with sick gently flowing down the stairs)?

Sorry to commit you to old school, but its a long time since I ate out in Watford.

Minimal change towards the likeliness of it happening. So an increase in bets. Usually if a story comes out then people bet.

If there was decimal points it would have changed from 2/5 to something like 2.2/5.

I didn't do the maths. But it's something like that.

Was going to say the same thing. Also young ambitious new coach, with the calibre of player we are looking at they are also trying to either get there careers back on track or make a name for them selves. Gibbs fits the pozzo model and he is a lot better than what we already have at left back in the squad.

Some guy in the comment section is claiming to be itk and states that we entered into negotiations on Saturday with Gibbs. He goes onto say all about Gibbs' demands etc. Clearly a load bull but by what he has posted he we will make himself look like an itk. He doesn't commit to anything but states random figures. If the deal goes through he will claim it all worked out. If it doesn't he will blame it on his made up figures and claim that Gibbs wouldn't budge from his demands.
