If this happens I think it's another decent signing. Another home grown player that is more than capable of doing a job at lb and competing with Holebas.

Holebas had a mare first half. Got skinned by their 20 I think with ease. Didn't help with Amrabat in front of him or Watson and Capoue as DM.
Better 2nd half but he needs competition for his place desperately.

Give names. You've given enough criticism of our recruitment policy so far that it would be nice to hear who'd you like to see us go for that is both affordable and realistic?

Gibbs would be a good signing at the right price. Make no mistake though, if we buy him for £8m-£12m, he's going to be first choice LB and god knows ho that will go down with Holebas.

Will be a good signing if it does come off. Holebas is getting old and is too much of a mixed bag defensively. We need an alternative.

Mixed bag defensively? His dissent issue in the first half of last season was a problem, but defensively, as a player, he is pretty excellent.

Still not sure we will go for Gibbs and certainly not at the price Arsenal want. I reckon betting only suspended because Pullis pulled out and we were last on the list. Would prefer a younger option like Samir at Udinese who can also play CB. Holebas is not going to want to defer to Gibbs. Also it was reported he is on 60k per week. Unless it was a striker I doubt we will pay 12 million? Pounds and break our wage structure for a back up defender. This guy is OK but nothing more. Expect he will eventually go to Newcastle who will always pay top dollar. COYHS. PS - Betting was suspended on Asambalonga coming to us and that turned out to be horse do do.

You didn't see his first half performance today then.

If Gibbs wants 60k a week then assuming it's a 5 year deal that commits us to spending around around 30 million including transfer fee. In other words it ain't happening and rightly so.

Did I watch a friendly match in Austria you mean?

    No. No, I didn't.

But even if I did, I wouldn't judge any one player based on one single performance, if I did Troy would've been gone long before he scored his first season of 20-25 goals.

IMO Holebas is not excellent defensively, he's a decent defender. He was caught many times last season and we had a lot of crosses coming into our penalty area from his side.
I would be happy to upgrade the left back slot if possible.

Do you think Gibbs is better than decent ? We are week from August. I really do hope they have some irons in the fire for some goalscoring options.

More so when you add in that he will be 30 in 3 years time with little resale value. He's not a youngster on the brink of breaking through. He's at his peak.

People who are looking at players on the fringe of top 6 clubs and saying they are "bang average' are in need of a wake up call.

Sure, if we end up signing players from top clubs who are 34 years old and whose legs av gon then there's a risk, but fit players, in their prime who are good enough to be knocking on the first team of the Manchesters, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs or Arsenal are ready to be nailed on 1st teamers for us.

Look at Ryan Bertrand for example. He's a similar age to Gibbs, same position and couldn't really get a look in at Chelsea before he moved on. Moving to Southampton has got him fighting for the England left back spot, playing regularly and he is now being linked with a big money move to City. With regular game time there's nothing to suggest Gibbs can't do the same.

If he's much better than Holebas then buy, if he's not much better then it's a waste of money for a 27 year old defender.

The way I see it, we lack pace at left back, Holebas 5 years ago would have been perfect but he's lost his pace. Gibbs is pretty quick and he'd be facing Salah...who is quick.

    My thoughts are...buy him.

Holebas is severely overrated if you ask me. I think people like him because he shows commitment and flashes of skill going forward, that's all well and good but he's a defender and that's the bit he isn't very good at, he's too interested in going forward and too often caught out of position or just doesn't bother putting a block in etc.

Probably a better winger than Amrabat. Fast, direct, skillful, knows where the goal is. Maybe we should find a new left back and move Holebas up the pitch. Free him up of his main defensive responsibilities.

As 424 will no doubt point out, objective stats prove he was the 4th best left back in the league last year irrespective if what you think :)

If he's one of our quickest, we're screwed.

He tried numerous times the push an go and didn't have the pace to get past the defender. As I said 5 years ago...yes but I think his legs are going.

Just read this, but think about it. We stay in the premier league (even 17th) -> we make back triple that... in one season? He has one decent season, get's near the england squad and we can sell him on for more. Or he can stay for a few seasons and earn us more £££ for staying in the league again / helping us grow to a mid-table team. ;)

So Gibbs can singlehandedly keep us up ? Sign him now Gino.

We need to wake up - if we want to improve we need to buy better players, better players cost more in fees and wages - Gibbs has made 230 appearances for Arsenal with 137 of those in the league and 40 in the champions league plus he has 10 England caps and is 27yrs old - so he costs £12m and £60k per week that to me is reasonable in context to other premier league players and for this calibre of player. Gibbs is a huge improvement on holebas. If we want to improve it's a good signing, assuming the club can affoard it, but at the moment I would rather Gibbs than wasting money on south american players who we can't get a work permit for. They are contributing nothing to the team. We have to spend to improve and with all the other money being spent by other teams we need to spend just to stand still. And if signing Gibbs means we finish just 1 place higher next season then that covers the difference between his wages and holebas's

Wouldn't say he's a huge upgrade on Holebas but I do agree that he'd be a good signing. Can't see either of them wanting to be second choice so competition will be good.
