I am sure he is, but I'm not sure how much I blame him.

He's 27. This should be his peak, and he is very unlikely to get a better contract after this. If I was him, I'd certainly wait a few days until the end of the transfer window, when teams get desperate and are willing to give him an extra 10/20/30k a week, to land their man. This could mean an extra 3-5 million pounds for waiting a few days.

Gino is sensible and has pulled out now to avoid this situation. If we've called his bluff and no one makes a bid, I'm sure we'd be tempted make the same offer again, and he might be tempted to accept it. Otherwise, he will be playing first team football at a similar level club for a larger paycheck.

BBC say he's about to sign for WBA for £5m. Presume we now all maintain the "he was ****, dodged a bullet, never really in for him etc" line ?

    Take it all back.

West Brom have had a 5m bid accepted. We were simply outbid by a more established PL club.

    Fair do's.

Not really, surely our bid was the same (as it was accepted) but we just wouldn't pay him what he wanted?

In which case we might still be witnessing an 'unveiling' in the next 82 hours. Personally I'd rather it didn't happen. There's a bad smell emanating from Mr Gibbs and his advisers right now that I suspect would be detrimental to 'squad cohesion' if this deal were to go through at the eleventh hour.

p.s. Just seen the above two posts. If so, good. Gino's unknown 'rabbit out of a hat' will be delivered instead.

People still rambling on about Mason? Give me strength. If he was anywhere near good enough or ready do you not think Silva may well have started him against Brighton, clearly one of the weaker sides in the league, when our only recognised left back was suspended? He hasn't actually looked even close to good enough in the few appearances he has made and Silva has repeatedly said "we only have one left back" and that we desperately need another. That should tell you all you need to know.

    Gibbs can do one.

Not necessarily, we would have had to approach Arsenal first anyway with anti-tapping up rules in place, so a ball park figure with Arsenal would have been discussed first.

Everybody seems to be of the opinion that money was the stumbling block. It may simply be we were unable to guarantee him being first choice (and probably far from it) where WBA were.

Well that's that then. Off to West Brom who will pay him £80k pw. I really wanted him here but I don't blame Gino for not paying him that.

Strinic it is then or some other random foreigner we have never heard of.

I assume this is a joke? Fair enough we may not have guaranteed him to be first choice but the wage we would likely have offered him would have been enough indication to him that he would have been I suspect.

‘Probably far from it’?? In what way would he have been ‘far’ from 1st choice? Gino would have had a vague idea that his wage demands would be high and went to find out. I dare say if Gibbs had said he really wanted to come and would accept 50k odd a week, he’d have been signed up. Gino wouldn’t pay that for a backup LB.

Wages or a preference from himself or Arsenal for WBA were clearly the issue.

Were my thoughts too. Probably came wearing his Arsenal shirt to show how good he is.

Didn't I read somewhere that we have the highest 'distance run' average in the PL now? I wonder how much 'hard work' had to do with it.

  20. Absolutely that's what I would do next if I were Gino

Season loan. Can play full back, has done so in the past for utd; can also cover both wings

Not played for them this season I don't think (?) and didn't get games last either so possibly surplus to req.

High wages but can be hidden in the loan fee without upsetting the pay model / squad.

Buys us time to source a proper long term fix.

This stuff about hiding the wages.

It's hardly a big secret if WE know it happens, is it? Surely the 'upset' it's trying to avoid would be worse of the squad found out the truth.

I'd rather we avoid blood on the dressing room floor TBH.

  29. Yeah what an idiot Sir Alex Ferguson was, complete numpty, didn't deserve to win anything making decisions like using AY from time to time to cover full back

He should have known wingers can't be converted into full backs, just look at Holebas and Femenia, both absolutely hopeless

Did very well in his first season at Udinese by all accounts, but played a lot less last season, supposedly because the manager didn't rate him.
