Probably someone like Cleverly or Foster but with reduced terms to last season .

Would Ken Sema start for us next season in the Championship...yes, sure, why not, he's generally been pretty good in what's been a crazy season. Would he start for us in the Prem, probably not, but it's not to say he wouldn't be a solid squad option

He's just so, so average. How anyone can say he's been "excellent" is truly baffling to me. Average stats, average ability, average performances.

I don't hate him, he serves a purpose at this level, but that's about it and if we do go up he'll be horrendously out of his depth again.

  6. NathWFC

Yes, if the aim is to get relegated he'll be a fine squad option.

Good enough to make 30 starts for a mid table Serie A side last season, but not good enough to be a squad option in the PL for Watford. Yeah, okay.

He was fantastic at the start of the season, run out of steam since and is badly in need of a rest now, but next season, whatever division we're in, the schedule won't quite be so hectic and you'd think with Success and Hungbo also available that he'll finally get a bit more rest now

  11. NathWFC

Yep, just like he clearly wasn't good enough last time.

Troost-Ekong also started a load of games for Udinese last season, if we want to play that game.

So we're writing him off based off 9 sporadic starts in his first season outside Sweden, rather than a (more recent) year where he held his own and started regularly in a top league? Okay.

And yes Ekong has his limitations, but I'd also be satisfied with him as a back-up squad player next year, what's your point?

  13. NathWFC

    NathWFC First Team

No, I'm willing to "write him off" based on the fact that I think he still looks bang average in the here and now, despite playing consistently for us at a significantly lower level. Ignore Serie A, he's looked nothing more than a passable Championship player.

Neither are anywhere near good enough for the Premier League. Squad options still need to be able to offer something if they're called upon and quite frankly having the likes of Sema starting a number of games in the Premier League would be an absolute disaster.

Promotion can be simply secured now with a front four of success, Pedro, sarr and zinc.

The further sema is from our starting line up, the better I'll sleep at night.

Lovely bloke, shyte player. It's like Mariappa all over again.

Incorrect, but fair enough you're not gonna change your mind.

Our back ups in our best PL season at CB and LM were Mariappa and...Sema. I'd say Ekong and an improved Ken Sema would be decent enough squad players for a newly promoted team.

He hasn't improved. He looks literally the exact same player he was a couple of years ago. How and where exactly is it that he has improved? It's a fallacy built on the fact that he simply looks slightly more effective now that we are playing at a lower level. That's not "improvement" to him and his game, that's simply him finding his level.

Happy for him to be involved in the Championship, he does a job and serves a purpose even though he still isn't setting the world on fire even at this level and has been actively poor for a while now, just personally think he will be woefully out of his depth in the Premier League again should we go up and if we don't want to come straight back down we'll need to not be relying on the likes of Ken Sema in any meaningful way.

They would. I don’t think Sema has improved as such however. He’s 27, so likely just looking better because he is playing at a lower level. I’d still expect him to have a low impact at premier league level but as squad filler he’s fine I suppose. He also has a good attitude which is important for that role.

Improved in that he largely looked out of sorts in his limited PL appearances, then looked comfortable in Serie A.

We 'relied' on Ken Sema in his first season outside of Sweden for 17 appearances and achieved our highest ever PL finish and got to a cup final, so I don't think we're doomed for relegation if he sticks around as a back up. So long as we recruit well again.

  19. NathWFC

And he's now looked largely out of sorts a number of times in the Championship instead... Serie A is nowhere near the level of the Premier League.

He won't be what relegates us if he stays, obviously, I'd simply rather we replaced him with someone who hasn't already completely failed at that level and now only looks a half decent Championship player.

Not the worst option in a 25 man Prem squad, comes across a decent professional too.

Yeah, he has on occasion. Do you not think that could be down to playing 90 minutes most games in a very hectic Championship season?

'completely failed at PL level' is just ridiculously harsh, considering the circumstances. Facts are he's had 2 seasons where he's played consistently, and has done well in both. 1 in a top league, 1 in the championship. More than good enough as a squad player, and would be silly to mess around selling him, replacing him(potentially wasting money needed to improve the starting 11) with someone who would need to integrate.

Sema always plays at full pelt, can keep it up for a certain period of time, but not such a condensed season such as this one. He certainly isn't a Premier League superstar, but in a more normal Championship season, with Success and Hungbo to alternate with him, I'm sure he'd be even better next season if we don't go up

That's football. He's not the only player in the league to have played a lot of his teams games (bare in mind we're only a three quarters of the way through the season and he's been poor for a while now, bit early to be completely knackered), but of course there has to be an excuse for his average performances other than the blatantly obvious fact that he's just not that good. He's also actually only played 90 minutes in 17 games out of our 36 and has had a couple of periods out of the squad. He had plenty of average performances earlier in the season as well anyway, what's the excuse for those? Ivic's fault? Wasn't sleeping well? Ingrown toe nail?

It's not ridiculously harsh at all. He did completely fail at Premier League level. He played a bit (not a lot, because he clearly was nowhere near good enough), did more or less nothing, we didn't want him, no other Premier League side wanted him so he got shipped off to our mates in Serie A, where he then was so good that no one in Serie A made any real effort to keep him in that division and so he's ended up back at Watford, putting in mostly 6/10 performances in the Championship.

He's really is just the typical Watford fan favourite, isn't he? Works really hard and seems like a nice bloke so it's "yay, King Ken! What a legend!" and we have to pretend he's better than he is and be ignorant to his actual level of ability. He does work hard and he does seem like a nice bloke, but that doesn't change the fact that he's actually an incredibly average footballer who mostly isn't even a stand out in the Championship, never mind being anywhere near good enough for the Premier League.

Again, almost completely wrong and needlessly negative, but maybe another heel turn will come at some point, like with Sierralta (Xisco next?). We can but hope.

Ken was great for the first half of the season but his signature stepover then bullying the full back hasn't worked for a while now. He still does a decent job for the team but he just doesn't have a spark or a bit of pace to replicate what Sarr does on the other side. He's probably best described as workmanlike which is fine in a 46 game slog, but in the Premier League I wouldn't want him as more than bench filler.

Sema was excellent before he got Covid. Can’t help but assume recovery from that has affected his dynamism since. Fine player if can get back to that level, was having full backs on toast.

Which bits are "wrong"? The bits you just don't want to hear?

    - He's played 90 minutes this season only 17 times (less than half of our games, not "most" as you said) - fact
    - We deemed him not good enough for the Premier League and shipped him off to Udinese - fact
    - No other Premier League side took him - fact
    - No other Serie A side took him after the Udinese loan - fact

You absolutely love your little "yeah but I can say you were wrong about this now that things have completely changed over a period of time and a number of different factors have come into play" jibes, don't you? Not just this latest one, you do it constantly.

Sierralta is a completely different situation to Sema. I wrongly presumed Sierralta was another bargain bin Pozzo signing (of which there has been many, Perica a great example of one coming along at the same time as Sierralta) based on his career history, or lack there of. I have now watched Ken Sema be mostly underwhelming nearly 50 times for Watford and therefore am passing judgement on the player based on what I've seen.

Again, OK for the Championship, wouldn't want him anywhere near a Premier League squad. Simple.

Yeah, hard disagree. He's a good Championship player and will be just fine as a PL squad player.

I'm "moaning" because I don't think Ken Sema is good enough for the Premier League?

Here we go again with this "don't you dare have an opinion that isn't completely sunshine and rainbows!" s**te. I'll have whatever opinion I want and as this is a public forum I'll express it whenever the f**k I want.

    Cheers though.

Think Masina might get a break for a while after 2 match winners. Xisco will be given until the next defeat before the knives are out again. Sarr got a bit of a kicking from the usual suspects on the shoutbox yesterday but of course came up with the goods again, beating 3 players to win the free kick in the last minute.

I feel some knicker-wetting incoming if Bachmann stays on his line for a corner again next game, so maybe he's next in line...

Yep, everyone is good enough at all times and no performances of any players or manager should ever be critiqued or discussed, unless of course it's to w*nk ourselves silly about how fantastic they are to keep the clapper crew happy because they cannot bear to hear anything other than their own incessantly positive opinions.

The irony, as well, is that if anyone dare have an opinion that isn't just delusional positivity regardless of the situation, then they are labelled a bed wetter by some self-righteous c*nt who themselves freaks out and throws their toys out of their pram calling people morons because they can't tolerate a different viewpoint to their own. Hilarious, really.

Everyone in the squad is more than good enough for the Premier League, everyone puts in a 10/10 performances in every match, no one makes any mistakes and everyone associated to the club is world class. Better?

Anyone can be negative It is the easy uninformed option.
Are you that guy who bores everyone to death in the work canteen when
he states "England won't win the World Cup, not good enough"?
But is not wise enough to understand that he is probably correct as he has
Brazil, Spain, Germany, France etc etc to back his claim.
    Are you that person ?
Anyone can say "Watford won't win the league" and think that they are sage words.
Anyone can be that ******* who doesn't understand that saying that he has 23 other teams batting for him. Or her.
