I know he has been playing for a side at the bottom of the championship but he has poorer goal scoring record in terms of goals per 90 minutes than Deeney, João Pedro and Sarr and is only marginally better than Perica and Gray. Definitely not what we need.

They bought him for £500k but selling him for £400k.

Can't remember noticing him play, but 3 goals in 15 games? Not great. How is that enough to have attracted the attention of ourselves and WBA?

Sounds like he'll surely end up at West Brom though if they are interested.

I hope it's true that we are looking for another striker, but someone like him for a fee believed to be around £400k hardly screams ambition and much chance of an upgrade.

Seems to be a bit of a random option.

Actually Deeney has a goal from open play every 676 minutes, Windass has a goal in open play every 432 minutes.

Windass' current goalscoring rate is almost identical to Andre Gray's (1 per 427 minutes).

Windass's goal per 90 minutes ratio is 0.27 Grays is 0.21. Deeney's overall ratio is 0.53 regardless of how many of Deeney's goals have come from open play those figures reveal that he has played almost half the amount of games and has scored the same number of goals. Which only highlights to me that we clearly need far better than Windass.

He scores the first goals in these two games from the last few weeks. He seems moderately quick, hard to tell much beyond that.

Except how many are from open play is important - we struggle massively to score from open play because our strikers can't finish the chances we create. We can't get promoted only scoring penalties. Therefore, we need a striker who can score from open play. Deeney hasn't even earned the penalties he's scored. Once he's finally buggered off then someone else can take them.

I would be disappointed though if Windass is the calibre of striker we go for though.

Supposedly they're completely skint and struggling to pay wages on time.

On their forum they seem to value him at about £2-3mil though.

I think you need to account for the fact that Deeney has come back from an injury and wasn't fully fit few games so realistically he has played what 8 games fully fit? I am not trying to make excuses for Troy as he clearly isn't good enough and I agree that we need a striker that can score regularly from open play. However Josh Windass is not going to do that I am doubtful that he is even an improvement on what we have and the standard isn't set very high in all honesty.

General Wednesday fans' opinions, fairly positive overall, though nothing hugely enthusiastic. I'm not sure being the best forward at Sheff Weds is a huge ask in their current state. Likely irrelevant for us though anyway with WBA also in talks.

"Windass is our only forward who looks like he has a bit about him and can score on a semi-regular basis."

"Windass is a 2m+ player in my opinion. You look to make profit on every player. He’s only 26, looks our only real goal threat, has a bit of pace and skill about him. Wouldn’t look to sell him for anything under £2m personally. He’s the best forward on our books."

"Anything less than £3m is pathetic. 400k just f..k off. Vintage Wednesday. "

"Personally think Windass has real potential if he can ever unlock it. Pace, eye for goal and can drop his shoulder and go past a man. He’s a nice little cheap gamble at 400k. West Brom go down they’ve got a decent Championship player who can play in a few different positions."

"Hugely overrated. 3 goals in his 18 matches, greedy, and wasteful with passes. Maybe, just maybe, he’d be a decent No 10, though personally I doubt it, but he isn’t a striker. At least, not a good enough one."

"A goal every 258 minutes since he joined this time last year, in a team which creates b*gger all, is pretty decent. Especially when you consider, as you say, that he appears more of a number 10 than a number 9."

As opposed to now, when he is supposedly "fully fit" yet still looks off the pace in general, is dead at 70 minutes, and fluffs every chance he gets...

We all know Deeney isn't great but is he that much worse than Josh Windass? Maybe I haven't been clear enough but that is the point I am trying to make.

I'm guessing Troy is worse at scoring goals than Windass. Troy might have other bits to his game Windass doesn't though. I'd guess Windass would be more of a Gray replacement anyway based on those two goals and he seems more of a pacy forward than a targetman. He could potentially be a very marginal improvement over either of them from the sounds of it, but only marginal.

He is crap, thankfully there is likely to be nothing in it.

Based on the stats and the brief highlights I've seen, they both seem fairly similar in their style of play but I would indeed say that Watmore appears a slightly better player. He would be free as well, rather than commanding a small fee. The main question mark with Watmore though is his poor injury record.

Watmore linked with Norwich apparently but has been offered a longer-term deal at Boro - hardly surprising given 4 goals in 6 games in little over a month.

I though he was from the North East so would likely choose to stay there - but was actually born in Manchester and started at United so maybe not. Think we need to be looking at surer prospects than him though personally.

  29. lowerrous

    lowerrous First Team

Of course Norwich are looking at him - on a free he'll be a good signing for any Championship club.

I would also prefer that we sign just one absolute quality striker, but unless we really push the boat out on someone (which the club seem reluctant to do) then Watmore would be a good option. He could still also be worth a punt even if we do sign another CF as I doubt he'd take Deeney's spot - he could rather be a slight improvement in the Gray role, while also covering both wing spots if we need to rotate.

It's not a surprise Boro would offer a longer-term deal than any which more ambitious clubs would be willing to offer, so it would be down to him whether he wants a shot of being a PL benchwarmer for a season, or a more steady few years lingering in the Champ.

Watmore looked great when he first broke through. Would be a decent signing on a FT.

Why is Watmore only on a short-term deal at Boro? Or, alternatively, now he has been successful, why would they not sign him on a longer deal?

First question: cos he was recovering from injury and they're skint.

Second question, it seems they're trying, but of course he can also now sign for someone else instead.

You may be understating his recovery, given I think he’s been recovering from various injuries for about 4 years now.
